IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.

TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, AMOS RANK, of Salem, in the county of Columbiana, andState of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Impro'veme'nts in Harvesters, of which theiollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1 represents a plan or tcp view of so much of a. harvester, in which my improvements nre embodied, as is necessary to illustrate my invention.

The invention herein claimed consists in a novel method of combining, with a harvester, a separating-rod or cut-oti` vibrating in a horizontal circular path, to separate the cut and falling grain from the gavel being discharged from the platform, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanyingdrawings, whiehexemplfy one practical way of carrying outmy' invention, a finger-v beam, A,.is shown as secured to a shoe, B, of suitable construction te be attached by a hinged connection to a two-wheeled harvester of approved construction, such, for instance, as the machine shown in my patent of June 26, 1866:

The vertical part of a bent rod, K, is inserted into theother barrel of this socket, and held by a sot-screw, It, like the other one.
A socket, Z, slides on tue horizontal part oi' this bent rod, so that the socket can be moved lengthwise on the rod, or turned around it, as required, and be held in any desired position by a set-screw, l. A separatingrod or cut-oi?, L, is inserted in this socket, and, by the devices above described, can be raised or lowered as desired, while preserving its parallelism with the ground, or beinclined at-an angle thereto. The rod can also be adjusted on its vertical axis so as to be thrown forward closer to the reel, or farther backward on its reverse stroke. This plan gives me complete control over Vthe adjustment of the separating-rod.
In iig. 3, I have shown a simpler plan, which works effectively, which consists in removing the double socket and bent rod, and inputting the socket l directly on the vertical rod I. This modification has all theadjustments of which the otherissusceptible, except the rod cannot be inclined at .an angle to thc horizon, as in the other case. The rod I and separator are rotated, in this instance, by means of a lever, h', on the end of the shaftf, which lever is to be raised or lowered by means of suitable connections from the main frame, of any proper well-known form, adapted to the machine to which it is to be applied. i

In operation, as `the machine advances the grain is swept back by the reel, severed by the cutters, and falls upon the platformfwhich occupies the elevated position shown in red lines in iig. 2. While the platform is in this position, the separating-rod or cut-off is turned back at right angles to the nger-beam, as shown in red lines. `When a gevel of suicient size has accumulated, the driver lowers the lever L, which drops the platform into the position shown in black lines, and discharges the gavel. As the platform descends, the shaftf1 is turned, and through its gearing rotates the rod I, quickly causing the cut-off to swing in quickly above the platform and linger-beam, parallel with the latter, as shown in black lines. In this position the rod receives the grain which is cut'ancl falling While the platform is dropped. As the platform is raised by the reverse movement of the lever t, and the other parts of the mechanism, the cut-off is withdrawn out ofthe way, and the grain falls on the platform as before.
The red lines in fig. l, behind the finger-beam, indicate the outlines of a solid fixed platform, which may be substituted for the slatted dropping one, when it is desired to convert the machine into a hand-raker.
Whatl claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A vertically-adjustable separating-rod or cut-0E, vibrating in a circular horizontal path, substantially as set forth. I
-2. A separating-r0d or cut-off, vibrating horizontally in a curved path, and adjustable horizontally rclatively to thc finger-beam, substantially as set forth.
A separating-rod or cut-ot?, vibrating horizontally, and capable of adjustment at an angle to the-fingerbeam, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, substantiallyas set forth, of a reel with a separating-rod, vibrating horizontally over the platform. v 5. The combination, substantially as set forth, of a dropping-platform with a separating-rod, vibrating horizontally over the platform.
6. The combination, substantially as set forth, of an overhang reel, a droppin;` slatted platform, and a horizontally-vibrating separating-rod.
7. The combination of a horizontally-vibrating separating-rod, supported at one end only with a fingerbeam hinged to the main frame. i
8. The combination, in a harvester, of a laterally-projecting hinged inger-beam, a rcel, a platform, and a horizontally-vibrating cut-off, when the three latter are mounted on the finger-beam and shoe only.
9. The combination of a dropping-platform with a horizontally-vibrating,r cut-off, when so arranged that the dropping of the platform interposes the cut-off, and the raising of the platform withdraws it.
