IMPROVED CLEANING AND BORING-DEVICE.

Be it known that I, JOHN B. JORDAN, of the town of Aurora, inf' the county of Vifau'shara,"and,l State of Wisconsin, have ipvented certain new and useful 'Improvements in Boring and Cleaning Wells f and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the 'accompanyingV drawings,lm'akng partof this. specication, and Vto the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur. l

To enable others skilledin the artto construct and use my invention, I'will proceed to describe it.

My invention `relates to devices or apparatus for boring and cleaning out wells,and consists of an iron cylinder" placed upon a shaft, which is provided with novel mechanical contrivances for boring and loosening the earth, and allowing the same to enter the cylinder, sovthat it can be conveniently removed from the well.

In constructing my apparatus,.I maken metallicecylinder, A, of any required length and diameter, and ofsuitable strength, andattach to its uppeend a bail, B, having a hole, a, in it, and two eyes, 6, one on each sidethis hole, as clearly shown in iigs. 1 and 2. Near the lower end of the cylinder, I attach firmly4 a cross-bar,'C with a hole, d, in its centre, as shown in g. 2.

Through the openings inthe bail'B and crossfbar C, IA pass a shaft, D, and to the lower end of this shaft D, I attch or connectirmly two auger-lips, E,-similar 'to those used in ,post-angers, and provide that portionof their peripheries extending from the line of their cutting-edges a short distance round, witha flange, F, made so as to'stand parallel with the vsides of the. cylinder A, and alittle outside ofit, as shown'in figs. 2 and 3. To the side of each lip E,'just overvthe cutting-edge of the other, and just behind the iangeF-, I hinge a valve, c, as shown in iig. 2.Y i

To the end of the shaft D, below the lipsE, I-attach, in any suitable way to admitof itsheing. removed at pleasure, an adjustable winged scraper, G. The wings e, I curve o/n their outer ends, and shape them generally as shown in figs. 1 and 3. Their`shanks,f,1iit into sockets g of the arms -t of the scraper, which are'provided with' screws z', for holding them in place when adjusted asshown in gs. 1 and 3. I

When desired for any purpose, I remove the' serapcr'Gr, and atta-ch a doubleworm, H, for purposes here'L after explained. I

The shaft D, I make in sections, which are connected together` as the cylinder enters the well and follows the auger into the ground. Y i

In boring a well, I use my device with or without the scraper G. Having attached cords to the eyes to `connect with a windlass', I revolve in any suitable manner the shaft D. The lips andtheir tlanges F cut into the soil or ground which passes through Athe valves c, entering the cylinder A. As soon aslthe cylinder A is filled, or when desired,'I elevate it 'by means'of the windlass and cords, empty it, and,` repeat the operation as long as desired. l

When a well is to be cleaned or enlarged, Iattaeh thc scraperG, adjusting its wings e as desired. As. these wings are curved, when they revolve `they will forcefo'r' carry the earth under the cylinder, so that it can-passthrough'the valves c into 'the cylinder, and thus he taken out.

Sometimes it is desirable to getropcs, chains, or other articles out of-thc. bottom of the well. This II readily accomplish by attaching the double worm to the lower end ofthe shaft D. -This worm, as it revolves, fastens upon the articles, so thatthey may be removed from the wel-l with the worin.

1 The shaft :D revolves loosely in the bail B and cross-piece C, and as the anges F cut the` hole alittle larger than the cylinder, thecylinder'will keep close to the auger by its own gravity. In order, however, to prevent the shaft D from `going too far through the cylinder, under any circumstances, I place a-collar, I, on it, just above the bail B. A pin or other suitable device may be used` in place of arcollar, if desired.

In this, way I construct a cheap and convenient apparatus for safely, easily, and quickly boring or cleaning Wells. v

Some wells are small, 'or badly put up, or forother eauseslunsafe to enter. In these my apparatus can'b'e used to great advantage. It isspecially adapted for use n'quicksand or soft mud, as the auger will enter it freely, and the loosened material will pass freely through the valves into the cylinder.

*.Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is-f 1. An apparatus for boring and cleaning Wells, consisting of the metallic cylinder A, shaft D, with augerlips E, provided with flanges F and -valves c, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as herein described; v
