IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-MACHINERY.
@the ttztult referat tu in tigers tetttrt grtaitimt mating ritt rf tigt stmt.
TO ALL W-HOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Beit known that we, ROBERT Arm-:MON and GEORGE SINcLE'roN, both of the city ot' Paterson, Iassac county, end State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Silk-Spinning Machinery; `and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, which willenable others skilled in the art to malce and use the same, reference hcinghad to the nccompa'nyingdrawings, which represent a sectional elevation of our improved silkspindle through its vertical centre. V
This invention relates t-cfan improved spindle for spinning silk, which, from its construction and arrangenient, will allowiof silk being spun twice as fast, and equally as regular as with the spindles nowy i The spindle hitherto used for spinning sill: is Awhat is called'the live spindle, in which tlv carrying the bobbil revolves with the said bobbin, which' is pressed down upon a tapered part f toenter the bobbin, and the untwistcd silk, as it unwinds from the bobbiu to be spun up, p ring or loop iii-ailier revolving loosely on the top of the bobbin. l 4
In this arrangement. owing to theV weight and size of the parts to he putin motion, no greatspeed can bo imparted to the bobbin with advantage, and hence it spins with less rapidity than infour improj-r-fd spindle, in v which, to obviate this dilliculty, we only inove the bobbin, and have constructed the xed spindle so as to receive at top u. stationary thim'ele or cap, to the lower part of which is attached a. travelleig'the whole 'constructed I substantially as follows:
A is the spindle-bar of a silk-spinning machine orframe.
B is a stationary pin, held permanently in a vertical position upon the bar A, by being screwed or bolted thereon.
'D is the step or Washer, provided with a. bead on its outside, and having a dat surface, upon which the use.
-f c-t't or pin ,l .'ovided through a tube E rests.
E isa tube fitting snugly upon the round pin B, but having .play enough, so that it mayturn freely upon said pin B.l The tube E husa pulley, G, fast to or made all of one piece with the pipe itself, and on that pulley`G are two small catches, gg, which iitin proper recesses in the bobbin H, and cause the saine to revolve with the tube E. I
Kis the thiuible or cap, fitting on the tapered top of the pin B, so as to remain stationary thereon The lower ,partjof the thimble K is provided 'with a ring, L, havingontside beads, top and bottom, as represented`n o'ur drawings, forming two grooves, in which the tivo ends of the little hook, W, may slide freely in a. circular manner, all around the lower edge of the thiuihle K. This little hook, W, is called the traveller, and works in the groove at the lower part of the thimble-eap K, much in the same manner thaty the traveller or thread-guide of cotton-spinning. machinery works in the rings of the laying-bar.
Operation.
. d silk, is placed on the revolving tube E; the cap K is placedv on thetop o f the, stationary pin B; the end of the sill; is passed through the traveller Wot' the stationary thimble-cap K, and from thince to the winding-hobbin' or block of the machine.
`'.llhe bolibn H ispnt in motion by the action of anendlcss cordon the pulley G, `and as the sill; is nnwound from `thebobbin I-I, it receives the proper degree of torsion from the retarding eil'ect of the traveller W'oi the stationary thimble-cap K, and as only the bobbin H has to be put in motion, it may be run at n. high speed, and enable us to'spiu silk with greater rapidity than in theA machinery now in use. i
e are aware that a' loose tube with a bobbnhas been used as ai receiviug-bobb'm on a. stationary spindle in cotton-spinning machinery, and therefore we do not claim said tube and bobbin as newin itself, nor .do ive `claiml the traveller .as new, \vhen used for any-other purpose, and otherwise combined with the spinningmachinery, than inthe manner and for thepurpose we describe it; b'nt Wifat we claim as our invention, and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l In silk-spirnning machinery, the combination of the stationary pin B, stationary thimble-cap K, and threadguide traveller W, 'with the movable tube E and bobbin H, constructed and arranged substantially in the man# ner described and for the purpose set forth.
. The bobbin II, containing the untvvisted double -BOBERT ATHERTON. [In 5.] GEORGEsnverLEfreun [L s] Witnesses:
