l Be it known that I, ABnAM PERRIN, of Cleveland, Stat'e of Ohio, have invented'a new Car-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to thevletters of reference marked thereon.
v The nature of my inventionjconssts in constructing a self-acting careoupling,which shall couple itself without assistance as the cars come together-,and remain securely coupled untilreleased by hand.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. Figure 1 is ahorizontal section. Y l

A is the frame of the eoupling, having riveted on its end the bumpers'B. C is a casting riveted inside the frame A. Its rear portiou,e, extends ,across -the frame, and cts as astop to receive the thrustvof the drawbar in coupling. The forward part is groovetl,` and opensat one side, c2 to admit the draw-bar. It also makes a-shoulder, e, which receives the pull of the draw-bar. Close to the shoulder c3. the groove just fits the drawban' At the other end, c, itaresoiutwards, to allow. s'uicent play to that end ofthe draw-bar.
The drapwbar D is formed with `au arrow-head, d, -the 'barb of which bears against the inside edge of the bumper B. This head is made wider than the opening between the bumpers, and consequently has to be'turned from its natural horizontal position-in order to enter. This is accomplished by forming the points ofthe arrowhead on :i twist, as shown in iig.Y 3, so that when theheai enters the opening 6,'the points of contact are not in the same horizontal line; andthe force applied in bucking theears together, turns the head d until it enters the opening, when theweighted lev- G- causes it to rsume once moi-edits horizontal'p'osition.
A rod bearing against a. spring would answer instead of this weighted lever, but be simply an equivalent. This twist of the drow-bur might also be given by au iuolineon the bottom of theopening b, through which the arrow-head enters. I
