TURRET ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,484, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed December 16, 1904. Serial No. 237,103.

Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turret Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in turret attachments for drill presses or latbes;
and its objectis to provide a device that may spindle, a rotative turret-head adapted to contain a number of rotative tools and to bring the same in succession in line with the driving-spindle and clutch mechanism for connecting the driving-spindle and the respective tools, means for locking the turret-head in its various positions, and means for simultaneously operating the clutch and said locking means, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, adetail of the driving-spindle and clutch member; Fig. 4, a detail of one of the tool-holders; Fig. 5, an end view of the clutch, and Fig. 6 an end view of the tool-holder.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The driving-spindle of the device is provided with atapered portion 1, adapted to be inserted in a drill press or lathe and driven thereby. The straight portion 2 of this spindle is journaled in a suitable bearing i and provided with a flange 3 at the lower end. To retain the same in the bearing, a suitable bed-plate 5 is attached to the bearing 4 at any convenient brace 19 extends between the bearing and bed- Be it known that I, RALPH Gr. DENYEs, a citiplate and is provided with a socket in which is inserted an arm 20, which arm projects at right angles to the axis of the bearing and en'- gages any convenient part of the machine. A hollow rotative head 7 is provided, having a circular opening in one side which rota ti'vely engages the flange or seat 6 to suitably support and steady the head from vibration. is secured to the stud 9 by a suitable cap-screw The head 10, about the axis of which screw it is freely rotative. In the head at intervals are inserted a number of suitable sleeves 11, in which are jou-rnaled rotative sockets'12, adapted to hold any suitable drills or other tools 13, as occasion may require. These sleeves are arranged at a suitable angle to bring each tool successively in axial alinement with the drivingspindle.
In the lower end of the driving-spindle is a socket or opening 23, preferably rectangular in cross-section, and within this socket is a longitudinally-movable shank 22, having a corresponding angular cross-section, whereby the shank is freely movable longitudinally in the spindle and is rotated by the same. On the lower end of this shank is a clutch member 14:, 7
provided with a groove 18 for the yoke-pins and a transverse groove 21 to engage projections 24 on the sockets 12-and the upper end of the tools 13. This clutch member is vertically adjusted by means of ayoke 15, pivoted in an opening in the bed 5 and having pins engaging the groove 18. This yoke is operated by means of a suitable lever 16, pivoted to the bed 5 and having a tooth or cog extending between projections on the yoke, whereby the yoke is adjusted about its pivot.
At suitable intervals in the margin of the head 7 are openings 8 to receivea locking-pin 17, extending through a corresponding opening in the bed 5,.and said pin is longitudinally adjusted by being pivotally connected to the lever 16. These openings 8 are so located that when one of the same is opposite the pin 17 one of the tools 13 will be in axial alinement with the driving-spindle of the device.
The device in the drawings is represented With the lever 16 raised, the pin 17 withdrawn, and the clutch detached. By depressing the lever the pin 17 is engaged with the opening 8 and the clutch is simultaneously engaged with the socket. By raising the lever the head and clutch are released and any one of the various tools may be brought in line with the spindle and operated thereby by depressing the lever to engage the clutch and hold the head from turning on its axis.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a bed-plate, an annular flange or seat and a stud on the bed-plate, a hollow turret-head inclosing the stud and rotatively engaging the seat, a bearing arranged at an angle to the bed-plate, a spindle in the bearing, a clutch member on the spindle, a series of tool-sockets journaled in the head, clutch members on the sockets and inclosed by the head and bed-plate, means for rotatively adjusting the head, and means for engaging the clutch member on the spindle with the several clutch members on the sockets.
2. The combination of a driving-spindle adapted to be inserted in a lathe or drill and having an angular socket a bearing in which the spindle is rotative, a bed-plate attached to the bearing, a turret-head having a series of openings, a series of rotative tool sockets mounted in the turret-head, a stop-pin to engage said openings and hold the head, a clutch member to engage and rotate the tool-sockets,
an angular shank on the clutch member and longitudinally movable in the socket of the driving-spindle, a yoke to adjust the clutch member, and a lever connected to the yoke and stop-pin to simultaneously adjust the same.
3. The combination o'ladriving-spimllehaving a tapered portion at one end and a socket at the other end, a flange on the end of the spindle, a shank horizontally movable in the socket and rotative with the spindle, a clutch member on the shank and having a transverse groove in its face and also having a circumferential groove, :1 bed-plate surrounding the spindle, a turret-head rotative on the bedplate and having a series of" openings, sleeves opposite the respective openings, tool-sockets rotative in the sleeves and engaged by the clutch member, a locking-pin longitudinally movable in the bed-plate and engaging the openings in the head, a yoke pivoted on the bed-plate and having pins engaging the circumferential groove in the clutch member, and a lever engaging the yoke and pivotally connected to the pin.
