Be it known that I, ANDREW Fonnns, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Leeds, in the co unty of York, England, have invented a certain new or Improved lVrapping-Machine, of specification.
This invention relates to a new or improved machine, as hereinafter described, for wrapping .round tablets or disks, such. as circular chocolate cakes, in a covering material, such as tin-foil, in a speedy and efficient manner.
The machine consists, essentially, of a stati onary plate formed with a circular opening, to which single lengths of wrapping material are fed at prer'letermined intervals, means for intermittently feeding the tablets singly onto the single lengths of wrapping material lying over said opening, means for carrying each tablet and its wrapper down through said opening, so as to bring the edges of the wrapper into an upstanding position around the tablet, and a revolving wheel adapted to receive the partially-wrapped tablets upon its flat surface with. their inner edges resting against a circular flange formed on the wheel while their outer edges are in contact with a stationary outer ring, whereby the tablets, along with their wrappers, are rotated on their axes by contact with the said stationary ring, while the upstanding edges of each wrapper are gradually turned radially inward over their tablet by contact with a cam-surface or plate formed on or carried by the stationary ring.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a part sectional left-hand side elevation of a wrappingmachine constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same machine. Fig. 3 is a part sectional end elevation of the machine, and Fig. 4 is a part sectional right-hand side elevation of a portion of the machine. Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are sections of portions of the machine, drawn to an enlarged scale, illustrating the different stages in the process of effecting the folding of the wrapper around the tablet.

To the table 2 and over one side of the wheel 7 is mounted a head-stock 15, carrying a verticallysliding rod 16, formed at its lower end with. a circular plunger-head 17, which plunger-rod 16 is reciprocated through the medium of a double-ended rocking lever 18, fulcrumed at 19 on the headstock 15, and a coni'iecting-rod 20, provided with a runner 21 in connection with an engaging cam 22, located on the main shaft 4, the axis of the plunger-head 17 being directly over the center of the plate-like surface 12 of the revolv- 8o ing wheel 7. The head-stock 15 is also provided with a horizontal carrying-base 23, formed with a circular opening 24 immediately below the plunger-head 17, said carrying-base 23 being fitted with a slide 25, 8 which is reciprocated in a forward direction through the medium of a spring 26 and in a backward direction through the medium of a double-ended rocking lever 27, fulcrunlcd at 28 on the frame 1, and an engaging cam 29, located on the main. shaft 4, and in connection with this slide 25, at right angles thereto, is provided. an. endless belt 30, the front end of which is mounted on a roller 31, carried by brackets 32, while the opposite end of the belt 30 is mounted on a roller located on a carrying-bracket, (not shown in the drawings,) the said. roller 31 being driven to move ing-base 23 of the the belt 30 through the medium of a pulley 33 and a band or cord 34 from a pulley 35, located on the cross-shaft 9 of the machine. The endless traveling belt 30 is adapted to feed forward the tablets to be wrapped to the horizontal carrying-base 23 in front of the reciprocating slide 25, which latter in its turn feeds the said tablets forward along the carrying-base 23 beneath a spring-bar 36, pivoted at 37 to the head-stock 15, and delivers them singly at predetermined intervals to the opening 24 below the plungerhead 17. To the head-stock 15 and immediately below the opening 24 of the carryingbase 23 is provided a second plate 38, formed with a corresponding opening 39, to which the lengths of wrapping material are fed singly at predetermined intervals by rollers 40, located at the end of a dividing-table 41 of suitable wrapper-feeding apparatus, preferably of the type described in the specification of British Patent No. 4,336/92, the said feeding apparatus being driven from the main shaft 4 through the medium of bevelgearing 42, vertical shaft 43,bevel-gearing 44, and horizontal shaft 45.
The stationary segmental ring 6, located on the table 2, extends around the major portion of the revolving wheel 7, with its front end stopped short immediately in front of the head-stock 15, and on the upper surface of the segmental ring 6 is mounted a stationary cam-plate 46, which projects over the annular space formed between the flange 1.1 of the wheel 7 and the stationary ring 6 in an inwardly-curved direction, so as to gradually close in the said opening at its top side from the head-stock end of the ring 6 to its opposite or terminating end.
Over the plate-like surface 12 of the revolving wheel 7, beyond the terminating end of the stationary ring 6, is provided a stationary plow-blade 47 in conjunction with a chute 48, below which latter is situated a pair of pressing-rollers 49 in conjunction with a delivery-spout 50, the said rollers 49 being geared together by spur-gearing 51 and driven through the medium of a pulley 52 and a cord or band 53 from a pulley 54, located on the main shaft 4.
In action the machine works as follows: A. length of wrapping material 55 having been delivered to the auxiliary base-plate 38 over its circular opening 39 and a number of tablets 56 having been fed forward by the traveling belt 30 and pushed along the carryhead-stock 15 by the reciprocating slide 25, the first tablet 56 passes beneath the spring-bar 36 to the circular opening 24 in the base 23, through which opening the said tablet 56 falls horizontally onto the wrapping material 55, lying over the opening 39 of the auxiliaryplate 38, (see Fig. 5,) when the plunger-head 17 comes down upon the tablet 56 and carries the said tablet 56 and its wrapper 55 in a downward direction through the opening 39, which has the effect of turning up the wrapper 55 around the tablet 56, so that the edges of the wrapper are brought to an upstanding position, in which condition the partiallywrapped tablet comes upon the plate-like surface 12 of the revolving wheel-7, (see Fig. 6,) which wheel carries it round within the stationary ring 6 with its front edge against the rubber lining 14 of the flange 11 of the wheel 7, while its outer edge is in contact with the rubber lining 14 of the stationary ring 6, so that the said tablet is rotated on its axis as it travels around, whereby the upstanding portions of the wrapper 55 are gradually turned radially inward onto the top of the tablet 56 by contact with the overhanging camlate 46 of the stationary'ring 6, (see Figs. 7, S, and 9,) and thus the tablet is completely inclosed in its wrapper, which wrapped tablet is then taken off the revolving wheel 7, after passing out of the segmental ring 6, by the stationary plow-blade 47 and passed down the chute 48 between the pair of pressing-rollers 49, which completely press the wrapper upon the tablet, when the completely-wrapped tablet passes away from the machine by Way of the delivery-spout 50. The single lengths of wrapping material 55 and tablets 56 are fed into position below the plunger-head 17 at predetermined intervals in quick succession, the plunger-head 17 cansing each tablet and its wrapper topass down through the base-plate opening 39 and bring the edges of the wrapper to an upstanding position around the tablet and deliver it onto the plate-like surface 12 of the revolving wheel 7, when each partially-wrapped tablet is car ried round by the wheel 7 in contact with the stationary ring 6 and its cam-plate 46, which effect the radial turning inward of the wrapper over the tablet, the completely-wrapped tablets being then conducted out from the revolving wheel 7 to the pressing-rollers 49 in the manner above described.
I claim as my invention- 1.. In a machine for wrapping round tablets, the combination with a stationary plate formed with a circular opening to which single lengths of wrapping material are fed at redetermined intervals, means for intermittently feeding the tablets singly onto the single lengths of wrapping material lying over said opening, and means for carrying each tablet and its wrapper through said opening to bring the edges of the wrapper into an upstanding position around the tablet, of a revolving wheel provided with an upstanding circular flange and having a platelike surface extending outwardly beyond the said flange to receive and carry the partiallywrapped tablets, a stationary segmental ring surrounding the revolving wheel and forming with. the wheel-flange an annular space Weasel hanging the annular space above the platelike carrying-surface of the revolving wheel to turn the upstanding edges of the wrappers radially inward over their tablets, and means for removing the wrapped tablets from the revolving wheel, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for wrapping round tablets, the combination with two superposed stationary plates provided with corresponding circular openings, means for feeding the I 5 wrappers singly onto the lower plate over its opening, mechanism for feeding the tablets along the upper plate and delivering them singly onto the wrapper, and means for carrying each tablet and its wrapper through the opening in, the lower plate to bring the edges of the wrapper into an upstanding position around the tablet, of a revolving wheel provided with a circular flange and having a plate-like surface extending outwardly be- 2 5 yond the said flange to receive and carry the partially-wrapped tablets, a stationary segmental ring surrounding the revolving wheel and forming with the Wheel-fiange an annular space over the plate-like carryingsurface o of the wheel to support the tablets peripherally and rotate them on their axes, a stationary cam-plate located on the segmental ring overhanging the annular space above the plate-like carrving-surface of the revolv- 3 5 in g wheel to turn the upstanding edges of the wrappers radially inward over their tablets,
and a stationary plow-blade to remove the Wrapped tablets from the revolving Wheel, substantially as set forth.
3. In a machine for wrapping round tablets in a covering material such as tin-foil, the
combination with a frame carrying a horizontal table or bed, a head-stock located on the table and carrying two superposed baseplates provided with corresponding circular openings, means for feeding the wrappers singly onto the lower base-plate over its openin mechanism for feeding the tablets along t 1e upper base-plate to its opening and delivering them singly onto the wrapper, and means for depressing the tablet and wrapper through the opening in the lower base-plate to bring the edges of the wrapper into an upstanding position around the tablet, of a stationary segmental ring 6 on the table, an inner revolving wheel 7 provided with a plate like surface 12 to receive and carry the partially-wrapped tablets and having a circular flange 11 between which and the inner face of the ring 6 the tablets are supported to 1'0- tate them on their axes, a stationary cams plate 46 on the ring 6 to turn the upstanding edges of the wrappers radially inward over their tablets, a stationary plow-blade 47 to remove the wrapped tablets from the wheel. 7, and means for pressing the wrapped tablets, substantially as set forth.
