IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MAGHINES.
` et: Situatie rzfzrtch m im ttes: @titers ttent :ma mating aan at ttt'stme'.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY UONCERN:
Be itknown`that I, CERLEs PABHAM, o f city of Philadelphia, -a'nd State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement.. inSewing-Maehines; and I do'ihercby 'declare the:- following to be n full, clear, and ex'ect description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawingd, inwhichl p Figure l'is a. broken top view of the table'of a Howe sewing-machine, with my' improvements attached-. Y
Figure is an under view-of the same. l' Y Figure 3 is a view'rofthe feed-wheel, bracket feed-wheel,'shuttlefcarriery und guide-bar. 1
My improvements relate tb that well-known class of sewing-machines in which the stitcli'is made by the iuterlacing of two threads, by means of a. needle and shuttle, or their equivalents.v
The object of my invention isthe adaptation of my improved mode ofrcurrying and driving the shuttle tas secured by Letters Patent, dated November 21, 1854,)-` to the Howe sewin`gmachines,`iu which the usual shuttle-racc or groove is usedfor the supporting of'` the shuttle, nucl the u suul driver is used for the driving of the same, although I desire it-to be understood that I do not confine my improvements to the Howe sewingmachine, but to all others in which they maybe used.
them. y
Aris a portion ofthe tahlehpon which thecloth rests: The usual shuttlerace, which slipprts the shwttie, and the usual guides or slots, for the support and guiding of the usual shuttle-driver, in theHowe machines, 'arec'ut away or"remo-ved. l
B is the bracket or brace for the support ot and to which the. feedwhee1 N and its stud d re attached, und for v supporty of 'the shuttle-carrier aud driver, und its guidebar.
C is the combined shuttle-carrier and'drive. D is the bar forthe support and guidunceot'v the combined shuttle-carrier and driver. E is the usual `bpcn space for the feed-wheel to project above the line of theeloth-table. F is the stud and its nu`t, for the support of and upon which the feed-wheel rotates.
G is the groove in which the flanges or wings of the drive; are steedied upon a round bur while the driver ismovug. v
H H are set-screws'for the securing'of the round shuttle-carrier guide-bar in position.
vThat others may understand the constructonand operatiou'of my improvements, I will particularly describe It will be observed that in attaching my improved lshuttle-carrier and driver to the Howe sewing-mach.ine,
I have cutaway entirely the usual race or groove, and the slots and guides for the driver, andin so doing the henger or supportof 4the feed-wheel is also removed, it being 'a partof the shuttle-rece or' groove, :ind attached to its under side; consequently an open space is produced. In this open space Lpl'ace my bracket or brace, with a.' lower slottedend, for the attachmentof the feed-wheel stud. Each lend ofthe lbracket rests upon and is secured to the bed et 1 and through eachen'd I pass my guiding, and supporting-'bar of the combinedshuttlecarrier and driver', the same placed in aline parallel. to the shuttle-face plate K and its upper edge And it will also he'observed that I havo so combined and constructed the several parts of my improvements that, as a unit or a'whole, they may. he removed und replaced witho'ut in the slightest Vdegree varying ora'ltering the mechanical operationof the Howe sewing-machine, es all thevpartsiit readily in their proper position. Therefore, the advantages ofmy `arrangement of the several parte, und their combination, und byy which n large portion of the surface of friction is removed, consequently' less wear of the shuttle and greater freedom' of` 4,action is'wattaiu'elno receptacle or ledges for the ,collecting ofgrease and dust, which nec'essarilysoil tho needle.
thread, `sindproduce the friction and wearing of 'the several parte. i
I deem it unnecessary to enlarge further upon the arrangement, c onstru'ction, and operation of my improvemonth I therefore will proceed to stato what I claim; and desire'to secure by Letters Patent', is
`The combinition, with the bracket, o f the carrier, driver-bargroove and feed-wheel, as described, for the purposes setforth. Y L Y lCIIAS. PARHAM.
