Description

WA.L TER .'KING, er arcanoNDMIss'oon1.
Letters Pal/ent No. 78,808, dated June 9, 1868 untedated May V27, 1868.
inraovsn nenes-POWER.
@its Stteimlt retract tu it that intera t-intent mit mating tart at tigt tiene,
ALL WHOM IT MAY lGONCERN:
Be it known that I, WALTER KING,-of Richmond, inthe county of Ray, and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive Horse-Power; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, lan d to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
The objeetJof this invention is to construct a horse-power in su'ch a manner that `itsA principal operative partsmay he used to operate locomotive machinery, such, for instance, as areaper, harvester, plantel', drill, or any other kind of farm-machinery, and at the same time be equally applicable to-tlie propulsion of stationary machinery, such, for instance, as threshers, saws, o r any variety of mills, Sto., Ste. i
VThe economy of a machine like this, where its operative and expensive parts may be converted into various lnsesQisso evident as toneed no elaborate synopsis of its merits.
f -1 Tolenablethose skilled inthe art to make and use my improved machine, Iwill proceed to describe its con` struction and operation.
' vllignre'loi' the drawings is a side elevation of the machine used. as a stationary horse-power.
Figure 2 is a plan of the same: Figure Slis a sectional longitudinal elevation of the same. y-liigure 4 vis a side elevation ot' the locomotive power. vlligure' isa plan of the locomotive power.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the driving-shaft, and the devices thereto attached. Figure is a side elevation of one of the driving-wheels. y V- Generallyfthe machine is built with two housings, A B. The first of these contains the operative ,parts of the machine, which are common to both the stationary and locomotive power. In this housingr bearings are Vprovided for the Vdriving-shaft C, on which shaft there are two driving-wheels, C C2.
fWhen attached to the housing B, the straight edge, ma, of the-housing A will assume nearly a vertical position, as isA shown in hg. 1, and dowols projecting from it will enter cavities'prepared for them in the straight` end, x ze', of the housing B. In thispositiori the two housings will be securedvtogether by hooks or other suitj-l able means. Y
When the locomotive power is to be used, the edge, m x, of housing A will assumea horizontal or nearly vhoriaontalposition, as is clearly shown in fig. 4.
, VWhen the two housings are eoupledtogetlier, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3,`an endless tramway, B1, will pass around the wheels Cl C2 and the roller B2, fixed in the/other end of the housing B, as mostA clearly shown injg. 3. This tramway will be ot' the usualjointed kind, usually used for horsefpowers, and hence neednotbe minutely described. The upper portion of it, in passing between the wheels C1, C2, and B2,'will travel down an inclined plane, as showninfigs. 1 and 3, as-isalso customary. As the tramway is drawn` around the wheels Gl C2, it will Aimpart motion to them, which may betransmitted, through the shaft C and driving-wheel D, torwhatever machine vis to be used, in the usual-manner,..z'. e., either by belt, gearing, or pitma-n, the latter being used either with the corrugated groove Z or/thc wrist dl.
When thcmachine is to be used asa locomotive horse-power, the housing A and its attachments only 'wilh be used, and these will be placed in the position already described, and then the peripheries ofthe wheels Cl C- will rest on the ground, as shown in fig. 4, and, by being drawn over the ground, the saidwheels C1 C2 will caused to rotate, their periplieries being studded'with eorrugations to prevent slipping on the ground.
In order to concentrate the operative parts of this machine, and at the same time gear uplth'ev drivingwheel to the requisite speed, I make the'driviug-shaft C hollow, and place within ita counter-shaft, Di.
` Theouter end of the hollow shaft carries a master-wheel, e, that gears' into a pinion, 022, on the counter# shaft da, and the counter-wheel di, on the same shaft, gearsinto a pinion, d", on the counterslaft D1, and thus an accelerated motion is transmitted from the 'shaft C to th'e `counter-shaft D1, and through it and its wheel, D,`
to lwhatever machinery is tio be operated I `Ahboss, c, is aiiixed to the shaft C, foreach' of its driving-wheels, as is shown in fig. 6, and in' this boss is placed e. spring-clutch, c2, arranged so as te engage the wheel when it is turned forward, and thus turn the shaft with it, but so Yit can be released When the wheel'is turned backward. This arrangement is cspeoallynecessary ,when the machine is to be drawn over-uneven ground.
The screw-bands ca keep the wheels C102 in position on their shaft. The shaft D1 should be provided lwith a lyfwheel, for. sten-dying the motion.4
When used as a. locomotive machine, the housing A may be provided with a pcie, E, for drawing it, as shown in figs. 4 and'. This pole is to be made of two pieces-7 e el, which may he separat-ed, .ind plafoed in thedotedthe case of' the stationary inachine.
V`line positions shown in 5, thus furnishing thills for theA machine, and converting it into a ehehe-rse machine.1
'It is very evident that a mower, harvester, drilling-machine, planter, or any other similar locomoti vc machine, may be'attached to the housing A, and c'iriven'by the Wheel D, either by means oflgenring, belt-g or. pitman, as in The carriage A Cl C2 may be used for a corn or other seed-planter ordrill, removing the gearingr c, d2, d3, 614,025, ima sima D. v
'o 4 Having described my invention, what I claim, is#
.1. A locoulotitfe horse-power, A C D, in combination with a. stationary machine, B B B?, substantially in v the manner shown and described; i
y 2. The housing A, when combined with the driving-shafts C D]l and the wheels C C, substantially as shown and described.
3. The wheels C1 C2, the bosses al, and spring-clutches c2, when constructed and arranged' as described and set forth.v l
4. 'lvhepole E, when formed 'of two pieces", e e, vandappliead to the housing A, so as to' form a one-'horse or a two-horse machine, us described and shown.
WALTER KING.
