WELL-DRILLING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,842, dated April 18, 1905. Application filed July 5,1904. Serial No. 215,324.

Be it known that we, Joux' R. GRIFFITH and Lnsmr: (l. Cosr'nu, citizens of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful \Vell- Drilling Machine,of which the following is aspecilication.
This invention relates to well-drilling machines; and it has for its object to provide for the construction and operation of a machine of this class in a simple, feasible, durable, and inexpensive manner.
The invention especially relates to the mounting of the bnll-wheel shaft upon the main shaft of the machine, the said bull-wheel shaft being tubular and capable of being coupled to or disconnected from the main shaft, as may be required.
Another object of the invention is to pro-' vide an improved spudding or jogging mechanism which may be used interchangeably with the walking-beam when desired.
Further objects of the invention will readily appear as the nature of the same is better understood.
\Yith these and other ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of embodiment of the invention,it being understood, however, that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that the right is reserved to any changes, alteratiims, and modilications to which recourse may be had within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the efficiency of the same.
In said drawings. Figure 1 is a top plan view of a machine constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention, the walkingbeam having been removed and the Samsonpost having been broken away for the purpose of exposing the subjacent construction. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing what may be designated the front side of the machine. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the rear side.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated by similar characters of referonce.
The frame F of the machine is preferably supported upon front wheels 1 1 and hind wheels 2. 2 for convenience in transportation, the axle of the front and rear trucks being provided with bolsters 3 for the purpose of supporting the frame in a level position. The frame is composed of front and rear side pieces 5 and (3, end pieces 7 and S, and intermediate cross-bars E), of which latter any desired number may be used. At the rear end of the frame is constructed a tool-box, and braces 11 extend obliquely from the front and rear axles to the body of the frame, trussed and reinforced.
The members 5 (5 of the frame are provided with berrings for the main shaft 12. having at its front end the main crank 13 and at its rear end the band-wheel 1t, which receives motion in the usual manner by means of a belt or band from the source of power. (Not shown.) The crank 13 and the band-wheel l t are both securely mounted upon the main shaft by means of keys 15, and both of said members are located adjacent to the outer sides of the frame-beams 5 and 6.
The main shaft carries between the side members 5 and 6 a tubular shaft 16, carrying the bull-wheel 17 and a bull-wheel flange 18, which combine with the shaft 16 to form a reel upon which the d rilling-rope 19 is wound and to which said rope is in the usual manner attached.
The end of the tubular l. ull-wheel shaft 16 .which projects beyond the bull-wheel is provided with notches 20, adapted to engage lugs 21, formed upon a collar 22, which is mounted slidingly upon the main shaft, feathers 523 being employed to cause the collar 22 to rotate with said main shaft. The collar 22 cooperates with the notched end of the bullwheel shaft to constitute a clutch whereby the bull-wheel shaft, with its attachments, may be locked upon or disconnected from the main shaft l2, as may be desired.
