SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,684, dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed January 28, 1905. Serial No. 243,071-
To all whom it incty concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs LEUENBERGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Van Ness, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Trolley, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to a trolley intended for use on electrical railway-cars; and it comprises the arrangement on the pole of a pivoted harp carrying at one end the main roller and at the other end or end portion two guiderollers, which are arranged to move toward and from each other and to carry the wire between them and which are held in active'position by a spring.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, which represent an example of the preferred embodiment of the invention, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the invention in use and illustratingin broken lines the position which the parts assume upon striking an obstruction. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, and Fig. i is a plan view showing the movement of the guide-rollers during the turning of a curve.
10 indicates the trolley-pole, which is bifurcated at upper end and carries a pin 11, on which the harp 12 is pivotally mounted. Said harp is provided at its front end with a fork 14:, in which a transverse roller 15 is mounted. This roller is grooved to receive the trolleywire 16 and normally runs along the under side of the wire, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At its rear portion the harp is provided with a pin 17, on which are loosely mounted eyes 18, attached,respectively, to plates 19. said plates being mounted to swing independently around the pin 17, one plate lying at each side of the wire 16 when the parts are in normal position, as shown.
20 indicates a spring for holding the plates in horizontal position, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, this spring being coiled around the pin 17 and around the plates, as shown. Each plate carries a guide-wheel 21, and these wheels are grooved to engage opposite sides of the trolley-wire, as shown.
22 indicates a rope'or cord for pulling down the trolley-pole. This rope has three branches 22, 22 and 22. The branch 22 passes through the bifurcation in the upper end of the pole 10 and is attached to the under side of the front portion of the harp 12, while the branches 22 and 22 are connected, respectively, to the under sides of the plates 19.
In the action of the device under normal conditions the trolley runs along under the wire with the three rollers 15 and 21 engaged therewith. Should it strike an obstruction, the parts will automatically take the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the rollers 21 swinging off the wire, the roller 15, however, remaining always in contact with said wire. From this position the trolley may be returned to its normal position by pulling on the cord 22, the branch 22 being then active, while subsequently the branches 22 and 22 become active in pulling down the plates 19 and permit the rollers 21 to reengage the wire. During the turning of curves should the pole become arrested in its movement, thus tending to disengage the trolley from its wire, the rollers 21 will cling to the same, as shown in'Fig. 4, these rollers swinging with the plates 19 around the center of the pin 17 v to permit the trolley to accommodate itself to various positions which the pole may take.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A trolley comprising a pivoted harp, a contact-roller at the front portion thereof, two hingedly-mounted plates carried at the rear portion thereof, rollers carried by said plates, a spring for pressing the plates and rollers into active position, and a branched cord or flexible connection having one branch attached to the harp and the other branches attached respectively to said plates.

A trolley comprising a pivoted harp, a roller at the front portion thereof and adapted 'to engage the wire, two hingedly-mounted members carried at the rear portion of the harp, rollers mounted respectively on said i to'this specification in the presence of two submembers, means for yieldingly pressing the members and rollers into position, and a branch cord or flexible connection having one branch attached to the harp and the other branches attached respectively to said hinged members.
