PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIOK LANGEHENNIG, OF ST..LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO ST. LOUIS GAR COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A.OORPORATION.
CAR CONSTRUCTION- SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,682, dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed November 21, 1904. Serial No. 233,704.
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIoK W. LANGE- HENNIG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a railway-car construction; and, briefly stated, it consists in the production of composite side sills in a car including as parts thereof insert tie-plates that extend upwardly from the tops of the sills and constitute the members by which the sides of the car, including the posts, are united to the side sills.
Figure I is a top or plan view of the underframe of a railway-car with my improvement incorporated therein. Fig. II is a transverse section of my underframe with the lower portion of one of the car sides shown built up.
A designates the intermediate sills of a carunderframe, and B the floor mounted thereon,
for neither of which any invention is herein claimed. The side sills of the underframe consist of the following parts: 1 designates metal channel-beams placed together in pairs and having their flanges projecting in opposite directions, and 2 designates wooden sill members that are seated between the flanges of the channel-beams, to which they are connected by binding-bolts 3 extending transversely through said parts.
4 designates metal insert tie-plates positioned between the inner opposing faces of the metal channel-beams l and are held in such position by the binding-bolts 3. These tieplates are of suflicient width to permit of the plates extending upwardly above the'tops of the sill channel-beams, as seen most clearly in Fig. II, and each tie-plate is provided at intervals corresponding to the spacing of the side posts of the car with bolt-holes 5.
6 designates one of the truss-planks which are located at the inner sides of the extended portions of the tie-plates 4 and rest upon the innermost sill channel-beams, and 7 is one of the seat-rails in which the side posts of the car are set, these seat-rails being located upon the outermost sill channel-beams and occupy; ing positions at the sides of the tie-plates opposite the locations of the truss-planks.
8 is one of the side posts, the lower ends of which rest upon the seat-rails 7 and are fitted to the tie-plates 4:. These posts, their seatto the tie-plates by binding-bolts 9, that pass dispense with the usual trusses common in car construction by which the parts of the underframe of a car are stayed.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a car construction, the combination of side sills, insert tie-plates positioned between said sills and extending upwardly therefrom, and posts secured to said tie-plates, substantially as set forth.
2. In a car construction, the combination of side sills having channel-beams as members thereof, insert tie-plates interposed between said channel-beams and extending above the tops of said beams, and posts secured to the extended portions of said tie-plates, substantially as set forth. a
3. In a car construction, the combination of side sills, insert tie-plates positioned in said sills and extending above the tops of the sills, truss-planks and seat-rails surmounting said sills at opposite sides of said tie-plates, posts seated upon said seatrails alongside of said tie-plates, and means for connecting said truss-planks, seat-rails and posts to said tieplates, substantially as set. forth.
