SHOW-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 787,461, dated April 18, 1905. Application filed June 27,1904. Serial No. 214,264.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain Improvements in Show-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to show-cases of that class wherein the top plates are of plate-glass held in place on plate-glass side and end panels by suitable corner-fastening devices.

The object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple construction, avoiding all necessity for making holes in the glass plates and at the same time securing permanence of fastening and the requisite rigidity.

To these ends the invention consists in the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and particularly set forth in the claims, and will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan viewof one corner or end of a show-case embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one corner thereof. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view with the base and floor of the show-case removed and with the connecting rod or screw also removed. Fig. 1 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation in detail of one side of the fastening device, showing the same in connection with the top plate, side or end panel, and the felt. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail of one of the top-retaining arms.

As shown in the drawings, 2 represents an ordinary base or floor for the main body of the show-case. This may be of the ordinary or any preferred construction.

3 A respectively represent the end and side panels of the show case. These are of plate-glass and are rabbeted in the base2 on their lower edges. Between the abuting perpendicular edges or ends of the plates 3 and 4: I preferably provide suitable strips of felt to make the joint dust-proof. The back of the show-case is preferably formed of a wooden frame 5, in which doors (not shown) of the ordinary or any suitable construction are arranged.

6 represents an angle or corner piece which corresponds to the angle of juncture between the plates 3 4:. This corner-piece is composed of a horizontal portion or main body adapted to rest on the top edges of the plates 3 4: and to form a metallic corner and is provided with a downwardly-turned flange 7, adapted to extend down over the front face of the plates 3 4; and prevent the same from bulging or moving outward at the corners, and is also provided with two or more downwardly-ex tending flanges 8 9, adapted to extend down wardly along the inner face of the plates 3 4, respectively. It is thus seen that the plates 3 4: are held in fixed relation to each other by this corner or angle piece 6. The angle-piece 6 has a central portion which extends in between the approaching ends of the plates 3 1 and is provided with a countersunk seat 10, through which a wood-screw or other suitable fastening device 11 may be passed. This screw is extended down into the base 2 and serves to hold the angle-plate or corner 6 in fixed relation to the base 2.

The flange 7 of the plate 6 is provided toward its ends with beveled portions 12, as.

shown, which form seats for the top-plate retainers. These top-plate retainers consist of arms 13, which have flanges at their sides adapted to extend over and bear upon the beveled sides of the parts 12 of the flange 7, which prevent the arms 13 from tipping or twisting sidewise. The arms 13 are provided at their upper ends with prongs 14, adapted to extend upwardly and embrace the edge and bear upon the top of the top plate 15'. The arms 13 are provided with elongated vertical slots 16, and through these slots set-screws 17 extend into the flange 7. By loosening the screw 17 the arms 13 may be adjusted so as to receive the top plate 15 and then hold the same tightly in place.

18 represents a metal strip permanently attached on the under side of the plate 6 and extending back onto the post of the back frame 5 and there secured in place by a suitable screw or fastening means.

It is obvious that there are corner-pieces provided with metal strips 18 at both ends of the show-case. This metal strip 18 serves to give rigidity to the show-case and to take the strain from the glass plates and to carry the same from thewooden frame. On top of this metal strip and between the same and top plate I provide a strip of felt, and the strip 19 is also provided between the top plate 15 and the front side panel 4, thus making a dustproof case.

With this construction all necessity of making any hole or holes in any of the glass plates or panels of the show-case is avoided and all possibility of the retaining-arms 13 becoming loose and twisting sidewise is avoided.

WVhat I claim is 1. In combination with a show-case base and wooden back, plates forming the ends and front of the case, corner-pieces fitted to the angles formed by said plates, a top plate resting upon said corner-pieces,said corner-pieces provided with vertically-adjustable removable arms adapted to retain said top plate in place, said corner-pieces provided with means preventing lateral displacement of said arms and metal strips extending from said corner-pieces backward to and fastened upon the wooden back.

In combination in a show-case base and wooden back, plates forming the ends and front of the case, corner-pieces fitted to the angles formed by said plates, a top plate resting upon said corner-pieces and said end and front plates, said corner-pieces provided with vertically-adjustable removable arms adapted to hold said top plate in place, said cornerpieces provided with means preventing lateral displacement of said arms, metal strips connected to said corner-pieces and to said showcase back, and means holding said cornerpieces in fixed relation to said wooden base.

In combination, with a show-case base and back, plates forming the ends and front of the case, corner-pieces fitted to the angles formed by said plates, said corner-pieces provided with downwardly projecting flanges embracing said abutting plates on both faces thereof, a top plate resting on said end and front plates, the outer flanges having beveled portions forming seats for adjustable arms, and arms adj ustably mounted on said seats and adapted to embrace and hold said top plate in place.

In combination, with a show-case base and back, plates forming the ends and front of the case, corner-pieces fitted to the angles formed by said plates and provided with downwardly projecting flanges embracing said abutting plates on both faces thereof, a top plate resting on said end and front plates, the outer flanges of said corner-pieces having beveled portions forming seats for adjustable arms, arms adjustably mounted on said seats and adapted to embrace and hold said top plate in place, and metal strips connecting said corner-pieces and show-case back.

5. In combination, with a show-case base and back, plates forming the ends and front of the case, corner-pieces fitted to the angles formed by said plates and provided with downwardly projecting flanges embracing said abutting plates on both faces thereof, a top plate resting on said end and front plates, the outer flanges of said corner-pieces having beveled or outset portions forming seats for adjustable arms, arms provided with beveled portions corresponding to the said seats, said arms provided with slots, means operating through said slots to adj ustably hold said arms on said seats, and said arms provided with portions forembracing said top plate and holding the same in position.
