RUSSELL \VALTON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH l. VAOHA, OF CLEVELAND, OlllO.
PLIERS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,414, dated April 18, 1905.
Application tiled July 6,1903. Serial No. 164370.
Be it known that 1, Ross ELL \VA Urox, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at (leveland. in the county of Uuyahoga and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvementin pliers, and more especially to farriers pliers.
The object of this invention is to providean instrument of this character which will be very compact, strong, and which can be cheaply manufactured and by means of which great cutting or shearing power can be obtained with comparatively short handles.
My invention therefore consists in the features of construction and combination of parts, as illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claim. 5 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing my pliers in their closed position. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section, showing the pliers open. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the pliers in their closed position.
Again referring to the drawings, ll represents an iron bar which forms one of the levers or handles of the pliers. One end of this baris bentat a right angle to form one of the cuttingiaws b. 1n the bar is formed a slot t, which extends through from side to side of the bar.
represents a bar which is somewhat shorter than the bar and which forms the other lever or handle of the pliers. An arm (2 is rigidly secured to the bar (Z a short distance from its upper end and extends at a right angle to said bar. The end of this arm is secured to Lil the bar midway between the top and bottom of the slot (1 by means of a pin f.
l A curved arm is pivotally secured, by 1 means of a pin /1, to the bar (1, near the lower end of the slot P, so that it projects at each side of the rod (1. The long end of the arm extends upwardly and is provided with a cutting-jaw f. arranged to cooperate with the jaw 6. The jaws and 1' are preferably ar- 5 ranged so that they will slightlyoverlap when the pliers are closed and will therefore remain sharp for a longtime, as the edges will not be dulled by coming into contact with each other. The shorter end of the curved arm 1/ is arranged to come into contact with the bar (Z when the pliers are closed and form a stop which takes the iinal strain when the shearing operation is completed.
A small slot (1 is formed in the upper end 0 of the lever (l, and a slot is formed in the arm A link 1' is passed through the slot 0 in the lever above the arm v and is secured in the slot in the arm by a pin /and in the slot (W in the end of the lever (Z by a pin m. 5
\Yhat I claim is A plier comprising a jaw-carrying lever, a lever, an arm formed integral with said lever and pivotally secured at its free end to the jaw-carrying lever, a jaw-carrying arm pivot- 7 ed at a point above its lower end to the jawcarrying lever and having its lower end arranged to extend between said levers so as to form a stop to prevent the levers being brought too close together, and a link pivotally secured to said jaw-carrying arm and to the end of the last-mentioned lever, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof 1 sign the foregoing specification, in the presence of two witnesses, $0 at Cleveland, Ohio.
