FLUE OR TUBE CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,205, dated April 11, 1905.
Application tiled March 10,1904. Serial No. 197,400.
Be it known that I, Rai' T. Ultram, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident ot' Deliance, in the county otl Defiance and State ot' Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Fluo or Tube Gutter, ot' which the following is a tull` clear, and exact description.
'l`his invention relates to rotary flue or tube cutters: and it consists, substantially, in the construction and combinations ot' parts hereiuat'ter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
@ne ot' the principal objects ot the invention is to overcome numerous disadvantages and objections common to many other structures hitherto devised with like ends in view and to provide a device of this kind which is simple and comparatively inexpensive to manut'acture, besides being' easily and quickly applied and adjusted and readily manipulated.
A t'urther objectto provide a device ot the character referred to which is thoroug'hly eti'ective and reliable in operation and which also possesses the capacity t'or long and repeated service.
rlhe above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying'drawings, forming apart ot' this specitication, in which similar characters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a side view ot' a rotary llue or tube cutter embodying my improvements. the olerating-hamlle there tor being' partly broken otl'. Fig. 2 a long'itudinal sectional view ot' the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional' view on the line 3 3 ot' Fig. 1 looking in the direction ot` the arrows. Fig. JL is an enlarged view in elevation, with a part ot' the structure removed, on the line t i of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction ot the arrows at such line. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side view ot' the operating-hezul tor the laterally-adjustable cutter-blocks, the stem ot the head being partly broken ott; and Fig. o' is a view ot the inner tace ot one ot the cutter-blocks.
Be tore proceeding with a more detailed description it may be stated that in the t'orm ot my improvements herein shown l employ a hollow body or stock ot' special construction in which works an adjustable stem, having' at one end thereof a specially-constructed head. A set of laterally-movable blocks is cooperatively organif/.ed with the body and head, cach being also of special construction and provided with a cutter, while mounted upon the body is a set ot' devices Vt'or rotating the structure in the operation thereof. A solid longitudinal extension is employed at one end ot' the body, having thereon a pilot for supporting the structure within a llue or tube to be cut, and while l have herein represented my improvements in a certain preterred embodiment it will be understood, ot' course, that l am not limited to the precise details thereotl in practice, since immaterial changes therein may be resorted to coming within the scope ot' my invention.
Specilc reference being' had to the accompanying drawings by the designating characactor; marked thereoml represents the body or stock ot' the device, the same being hollow t'or its entire length and pre terably reduced in external diameter for a suitable distance lfrom one end, so as to torm a slender section 2 and au annular shoulder 3. At diametricallyopposite sides ot' the other end thereotl the said body is formed with substantially duplicate notches ot suitable depth, which extend inwardly and are in communication with a recess 5, formed by reducing the thickness ot' opposite portions ot the body at (3 t'or a suitable distance, the inner terminal ol the bore S otl the body leading substantially from the center otl the base ot said recess, as shown in Fig. L). lVorking in said bore isalongitudinally-movable stem t), having at one end ahead l0, which is wedge-shaped or beveled outwardly at the opposite edges ll thereot',one fiat t'ace, 12,ot said head being provided at one ot' said edges with a raised tlange 12) and the opposite l'iat face, lo, thereotl with a similar liange lb at the other edge, and working in opposite directions through said notchesiat right angles to the head. and its stem are duplicate substantially oblong' blocks 1T, disposed on the opposite faces ol the head, each block bcing formed in its inner tace with a diagonal groove 1S, receiving between the sides thereotl the corresponding liange l) .or ib ot' the head, a rotary cutter 19 being mounted in l each block, so as to project beyond the outer end thereof, as shown. Fitted to the notched end of the body l by means of a screw 2O is the inner enlarged end 21 of asolid extension 22 of the body` the outer end of said extension being preferably reduced at 23 and received in a central opening therefor in a pilot 24, having radial branches 25 provided with suitable headed screws 26, which may be adjusted in proper degree, so as to secure the structure in place within a flue or tube to be operated upon, said pilot being held upon said reduced end of the extension, preferably by means of a disk 27 and screw 28.
The stem 9 is reduced in diameter fora suitable distance from the end thereof opposite to the head 10, as indicated at 28, so as to form an annular shoulder 29, this portion of said stem being threaded at 30 for the reception of jam-nuts 31 and 32, which, in conjunction with a washer 33, securely hold against said shoulder 29 the inner end of a sleeve 34, which turns on said reduced portion 28a of the stem and is threaded externally at 35 to engage a corresponding thread formed internally of the slender section 2 of the body, the outer end of the sleeve having a squared head 34u. Secured rigidly upon this section at 36 is a ring 37, having ratchet-teeth 38 on its outer surface, and rotatably mounted upon said section is ayoke 39, which embraces the sides of said ring and abuts againstthe annular shoulder 3 of the body and is held in position by means of a collar 40 and a screw 41. The said yoke is provided with a spring-pressed pawl 42, cooperating with the ratchet-teeth 38, and is also provided with a handle 43, and it will be seen that on turning the yoke in one direction the said pawl will glide over the ratchetteeth, while one of the latter will be engaged by the pawl on turning the Vyoke in the opposite direction, thus to turn practically the entire structure for effecting the desired cutting of a flue or tube. To move the cutter-blocks in or out, it is simply necessary to apply a wrench to the squared head 34n of the sleeve 34 and then turn in the proper direction and tighten the jam-nuts, whereupon the head and cutter-blocks will be held to the work to be accomplished by abutment of the inner end" of said sleeve against the annular shoulder of the stem.
It is thought the construction and operation of my improved device will be fully understood without further elucidation, although it may be added that at the outer end Vthereof each cutter-block is provided with a thickened portion 44, beveled for a part of its inner edge at 45 to move against the adjacent outer side of the head l0, and each block is formed in its inner face with a longitudinal groove 46, intersecting at its inner end with a diagonal groove of the block and receiving the adjacent projecting portion of the rotary cutter of the other block, thus permitting both blocks to work substantially atly upon the faces of the head. In order to accommodate the head in the forward movements imparted thereto for effecting' the outward adjustments of the blocks, the face of the enlarged inner end 2l of the body extension 22 is recessed for a suitable depth, as indicated at 47.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A flue or tube cutter, comprising a hollow body, a stem longitudinally adjustable in the body and provided at one end with a fiat wedge-shaped head having a flange at one edge of one of its faces and a similar flange at the opposite edge of its other face, and cutter-blocks having enlarged outer ends and lying on the opposite faces of the Wedge-shaped head with the inner end of one in engagement with the enlarged outer end of the other, said blocks being provided on their inner faces with diagonal grooves to receive the iianges of the said head.
2. A iiue or tube cutter, comprising a hollow body, a stem longitudinallyadjustable in the body and provided with a Wedge-shaped head having a ange at one edge of one of its faces and a similar ange at the opposite edge of its other face, rotary cutters, and blocks carrying said cutters, said blocks having enlarged outer ends and lying on opposite side faces of the wedge-shaped head with the inner end of one in engagement with the enlarged outer end of the other, the blocks being provided on their inner faces with diagonal grooves to receive the lianges of the head andl with longitudinal grooves intersecting the diagonal grooves to receive the projecting portions of the rotary cutters.
3. A iue or tube cutter, comprising a hollow body having an internally-threaded portion at one end, a stem longitudinally adjustable in the body and provided with a wedgeshaped head at one end and having its other end reduced and threaded for a portion of its length, a headed and threaded sleeve on the reduced portion of the stem and screwing into the body, nuts on the stem beyond the head of the sleeve, cutter-blocks on opposite sides of the head, and working in opposite directions through the body, a sleeve on the reduced end of the stem and threaded to engage the threaded portion of the hotly, and a ratchetand-pawl mechanism mounted on the body.
4. A iiue or tube cutter, comprising a hollow body reduced in external diameter from one end to form a slender section and an annular shoulder, said section being internally threaded, a stem longitudinally adjustable in the body and provided at one end with a wedge-shaped head, and at the other end with a reduced portion and an annular shoulder, said portion being threaded for a part of its length and provided with jam-nuts, duplicate cutter blocks disposed across the `opposite TOO faces of the head and working in opposite directions through tho body, an adjusting-sleeve upon said reducod portion of the stein, threaded to engage said slender section of the body, und n rutchot-zmd-pzuvl device for rotating' the structure, tho Sarno boing mounted upon tho section und abutting' against said annular shoulder ot' the body.
