TROLLEY-STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,035, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed September 10. 1904:- Serial No. 224,034.

Be it known that I, JULIUS A. GRAsBER- GER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Richmond and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Stands; and I. do
nation of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the trolley-stand, showing the trolley-wheel in contact with the wire. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line as :1; in Fig. 2 and showing the trolley-wheel in its dropped position after leaving the line-wire.
A is a base-plate, which is secured to the top of a car.
B is a frame, which is pivoted to the baseplate by a pivot b of any approved construction, which permits the frame to be revolved in a horizontal plane, so as to reverse the trolley according to the direction in which the car is to travel. The frame B consists of two side bars having distance-pieces between their end portions; but the frame may be constructed in any other approved manner. C is a curved arm, which has a forked or slotted lower end portion 0, which is pivoted to the middle part of the frame B by a pin (Z. The upper part of the arm is provided with a socket D, and E is a trolley-pole, which is secured in the said socket. The trolley-pole has a trolley-head e at its upper end, and the trolley-wheel, which is ournaled in the said trolley-head, is pressed against the line-wire j, so as to take the current from it.
.Gis a longitudinal bar, one end portion of which is pivotally connected with one end portion of the frameB by means of a link 9 and two pins g. The other end portion of the bar G is provided with a gab end H. The outer end portion of the bar G is preferably provided with a long slot h, and the link 9 is pivoted in the end portion of the said slot.
I is a catch, which is pivoted on a pin i in the forked. end portion 0 of the arm C. When the parts are in the .positions shown in Fig. 1, the gab end I-I engages with the catch and the trolley-wheel is pressed into contact with the line-wire by means of two spiral springs J, arranged between the outer end portion of the bar G and the frame B. These springs J are pivoted to lugs y' on the frame B and. are provided with adjusting-screws j, which pass through lugs on the end portion of the bar G and are provided with nuts, so that the tension of the springs may be regulated. The
I springs may be otherwise arranged in carrying out this invention, and any approved means for adjusting their tension may be provided.
Kis an adj usting-screw carried by the catch and bearing against the lower end portion of the arm C. This screw provides a means for adjusting the moment of release of the gab end from the said catch. When the screw K is screwed up so'as to move the lower end portion of-the catch farther away from the arm 0, the catch is tilted on its pivot, so that the release of the gab end takesplace more freely and the adjustability of the catch enables the mechanism to be set to work to the best possible advantage. j
N is a setting-rod, which is pivoted at one end on a pin it in the outer end portion of the slot h of the longitudinal bar G. The other end portion of this rod is slidable in ablock P, which is provided with pivots p, by means of which itis pivoted in the forked 'end portion of the curved arm C above the gab end of the bar G.
A stop is provided for the link 9 to bear against, so as to limit the movement of the bar G by'the springs J.
The setting-rod N is provided with two stops 8, which are adjustable and which are arranged one on each side of the block P. These stops are preferably nuts which are screwed onto the rod, and the outer stop 8 is merely a check-stop.
T isan adjustable spring which is arranged between the lower part of the curved arm C and the other end portion of the frame B from that previously referred to herein.
When the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 1, the trolley-wheel is held in contact with the line-wire. When the trolley-wheel runs off the line-wire accidentally, the trolley head flies up and the gab end tilts over the catch automatically and slides on top of it to the position shown in Fig. 3. The upward movement of the trolley-pole is limited by the check-stop 8. When the trolley-pole has sprung upward and the catch has been tilted over, the trolley-pole falls back by gravity to the position shown in Fig. 3. The block P strikes the sto s, which limits the downward movement of t e trolley-pole, and the trolleypole is supported with the trolley-head below the level of the line-wire and below the supports of the said line-wire. In this manner the trolley-head is prevented from striking the said supports and damaging them or itself. The parts are reset by pulling the trolley-pole downward, so that the setting-rod moves the bar G outward until the gab end tilts back the catch to its original position and engages with it again.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with a supporting frame, and an arm for earring a trolley-pole pivoted thereto; of a catch pivoted to the said arm above its pivot, a longitudinal bar pivoted to the said frame at one end and having a gab end for engaging with the said catch, and a spring between the said bar and frame.
2. The combination, with a supportingframe, and an arm for carrying a trolley-pole pivoted thereto; of a catch pivoted to the said arm above its pivot, a longitudinal bar pivoted to the said frame at one end and having a gab end for engaging with the said catch, two springs arranged between the said bar and frame one on each side of the said bar, and means for adjusting the tension of the said springs.
3. The combination, with a supportingframe, and an arm for carrying the trolleypole pivoted thereto; of a catch pivoted to the said arm above its pivot, a longitudinal bar pivoted to the said frame at one end and having a gab end for engaging with the said catch, a spring between the said bar and frame for holding the said trolley-pole in its raised position, and a second spring between the said arm and the frame for easing the descent of the trolley-pole when the gab end is disengaged from the said catch.
4. The combination, with a supportin frame, and an arm for carrying a trolley-p0 e pivoted thereto; of a catch pivoted to the said arm above its pivot, a longitudinal bar having a gab end for engaging with the .flld catch, a link pivotally connecting the other end of the said bar with the said frame, a stop for the said link, and a spring between the said arm and frame so that the said link is pressed toward the said stop.
5. The combination, with a supportingframe, and an arm for carrying a trolley-pole pivoted thereto; of a catch pivoted to the said arm above its pivot, a longitudinal bar having a gab end for engaging with the said catch and pivoted to the said frame at its other end, a setting-rod pivoted at one end to the said bar and having its other end portion operatively connected with the said arm at a point above the gab end of the said bar, and a spring between the said bar and frame.
6. The combination, with a supportingframe, and an arm for carrying a trolley-pole pivoted thereto; of a catch pivoted to the said arm above its pivot, an adjusting device for setting the said catch with respect to the said arm, a longitiulinal bar having a gab end for engaging with the said catch and pivoted to the said frame at its other end, and a spring between the said bar and frame.
7. The combination, with a supportingframe,'and an arm for carrying a trolley-pole pivoted thereto; of a catch pivoted to the said arm above its pivot, a longitudinal bar having a gab end for engaging with the said catch and pivoted to the said frame at its other end, a block pivoted to the said arm above the gab end of the said bar, a settingrod pivoted to the said bar at one end and having a stop on its other end which engages with the said block, and a spring between the said bar and frame.
8. The combination, with a supportingframe, and an arm for carrying a trolley-pole pivoted thereto; of a catch pivoted to the said arm above its pivot,- a lmigitudinal bar having a gab end for engaging with the said catch and pivoted to the said frame at its other end, a block pivoted to the said arm above the gab end of the said bar, a settingrod pivoted to the said bar at one end and having its other end portion slidable in a hole in the said block, adjustable stops on the said setting-rod for engaging with the said block, and a spring between the said bar and frame.
