AUTOMATIC FEED-REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 786,942, dated April 11, 1905. Application filed June 10, 1904. Serial F0. 211,959.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J ..AVERBEOK, a citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Covington, county of Kenton,
State of Kentucky, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Automatic Feed- Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cutting-machines in which a table for holding the work is reciprocated beneath the cutting-tool, and is espeupon which it works, showing the attachment embodying my invention in detail. Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view of the ways upon which the table reciprocates. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View, upon an enlarged scale, of the ad justable contact-block. Fig. 5 is a front ele-- vation of the ways with the apron removed therefrom to expose the feed-screw and the regulating-rod. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the cam upon the end of the feed-regulating rod. Referring to the parts, in the drawings I have illustrated my invention as applied to a shaper of ordinary construction and will give a brief description of the same.
, The apron A is fed along'the ways B by means of a feed-screw O. The feed-screw has upon its end a ratchet-wheel c and a loose sleeve 0, which carries a pawl 0 which en gages the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, the tooth o of the pawl being formed with a straight and a cam-shaped edge in the usual manner,
so that it will engage the teeth of the ratchet in moving in one direction and will pass overof raising the pawl 0 out of contact with the ratchet-wheel c at a predetermined point of travel in the apron. ln carrying out this object I mount a regulating-rod E rotatably in the ways B, parallel to the feed-screw C, and
upon its end I mount a cam b, which carries a roller 6 for contacting the loose pin 0 which is mounted in the end of the sleeve 0 and has formed in it an oblong ring 0 to fit over the end of the shaft C to permit of its having a vertical motion thereon. per end of the pin 0 contactsthe lower endof the pawl 0 which is mounted reciprocally in the vertical sleeve 0 Pawl 0 has two V-shaped grooves c 0 formed in it, which are to be engaged by the pointed ends of studs 0 0, which project in through perforations in the walls of the sleeve 0 in which they are held by flat springs c 0 The groove 0 is made at a point in the pawl such that when it is engaged snugly by the points of the studs 0 c the tooth 0 engages one of the teeth of the ratchet firmly, the springs allowing the point of the studs 0 0 to have enough play in the groove 0" to allow the tooth c to be raised out of contact with the ratchet-teeth in getting a new bite. When the pin o is raised upon the rotation of the rod E by theroller Z), the pawl is carried upward, so that the studs 0 0 pass into the groove 0 and hold the tooth 0 out of contact with the ratchet-wheel, so that the sleeve reciprocates upon the feed-screw without moving the same.
The up- The tripping mechanism, bywhich the regulating-shaft E is actuated at a predetermined point to cut oif the feed, is as follows: Secured to the ways B is a horizontal guide-bar F, upon which ismounted a sliding contact device f. The contact device consists of a split block, consisting of an upper half f and a lower half f, which are held together by a clamping-screw 7, by loosening which the block may be adjusted to any point upon the guide-rod F. The front faces of the parts f f are recessed to receive the roller f, which is of smaller depth than the recess and is held upon the sliding pin f, which passes down through perforations in the block and the roller f and is normally held upward by a spring f. Upon the adjustable rod E is splined a sliding block a, which is moved along the rod E by means of a bracket (0, which is secured to the inner side of the apron A and has lugs a and a for straddling the block 0. 1n alinement with the point at which the bracket (0 is secured to the apron it has a vertical channel a and registering with the channel a is a horizontal channel a. Within channel (4 a loose rod G is placed so as to rest upon the block 6, and within channel a is a'sec- 0nd sliding rod G, which projects rearwardly from the apron a short distance at the same horizontal level as that of the normal position -of the roller f The ends of the rods G and G where they contact each other are made tapering, preferably at a taper of forty-five degrees. It is apparent that the contact device f may be put at a point upon the guiderod F such as to contact the rod G at any desired point in the travel of the apron. \Vhen it so contacts the rod G, it pushes the same inward, which causes the rod G to be pushed downward and to impart a slight rotation to the shaft E. l/Vhile the rods G G and the contact device might be made of a character such that this rotation would be of sufficient magnitude to throw the pawl upward, so that the studs 0 0 engage the groove 0 it has been found expedient to make the parts aforesaid of a size such that this rotation would be slight and to provide a means for increasing the rotation. This is done in the following manner: Upon the shaft E is a fixed cam e, which projects inward and has upon its inward end a point 6 beneath which is a camshaped face 0 Adjacent to the point e and mounted in the ways B is a spring-pressed pin H, which is pointed upon its end 71. In their normal positions the point it stands just above the point 0 as shown in Fig. 9, and has no tendency to rotate the shaft E, since it is held against rotation in a direction downward by means of a small lug (5 upon the bracket, as shown in Fig. 2, or in any other suitable manner. As soon as the pointeis carried up above the point by the downward push of the rod G the spring it causes the point [L to travel along the cam 0 and thereby impart sufiicient rotation to the shaft E to bring the roller 6 into positive contact with the pin 0 and to raise the pawl 0 up, so that the pins 0 0 snap into the groove 0 1t is then seen that the tooth being out of engagement with the ratchet the feed is cut off.
I have secured a small arm n upon the end of the shaft E, which strikes a bell N, which is secured to the ways B, to notify the operator when the feed has been cut oil.
In operation it is seen that when the operator desires to have a certain length of cut made upon the work he adjusts the contact device at a point he desires the feed to be cut oli, and then he need not pay any further attention to the machine, but that when in the travel of the apron the rod Gr reaches the contact device the rollerf will strike it and push the rod G downward, thereby rotating the shaft E and throwing the pawl 0 out of contact with the teeth of the ratchet c, and thereby stop the movement of the apron. The ringing of the bell will tell the operator when the cut-off has worked. Roller f is made capable of receiving a vertical adjustment, so that by pressing it downward it may allow the rod G to pass it. A number of contact devices similar to device f may be secured upon the guide-rod F, so that a number of cuts may be made upon the same piece of work without readjustment of the parts. In order that the feed may be cut off when the apron has reached the limit of its travel in either direction, I have placed stationary pins 6 upon the Way B to strike the block 0 and cut off the feed.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of ways, an apron to be reciprocated upon the ways, a feed-screw for reciprocating the apron, a driving-shaft, means for coupling the feed-screw and the drivingshaft, a rotatable feed-regulating shaft journaled adjacent to the feed-screw. a device carried by the regulating-shaft for breaking the connection between the feedscrew and the driving-shaft, a second device carried by the apron for rotating the regulating-shaft, and an adjustable contact device adjacent to the apron for actuating the second device to cut ofi the feed at a predetermined point.
2. The combination of ways, an apron to be reciprocated upon the ways, a feed-screw for reciprocating the apron, a drivin g-sh aft, a loose sleeve upon the feed-screw, a ratchet secured to the feed-screw, a pawl carried by the sleeve to engage the ratchet, a feed-regulating shaft, a cam carried by the regulating-shaft for contacting the pawl and carrying it out of engagement with the ratchet, a device carried by the apron for imparting a rotatory motion to the regulating-shaft and a contact device mounted adjacent to the path of travel of the apron l'or actuating said device to cut off the feed at a predetermined point.
3. The combination of ways, an apron reciprocating upon the ways, a feed-screw for reciprocating the apron, a driving-shaft, means for coupling the driving-shaft and the feedscrew, a feed-regulating shaft mountedadjacent to the feed-screw, a device carried by the regulating-shaft for breaking the connection between the feed-screw and the driving-shaft,
rocating upon the ways, a feed-shaft, a drivingshaft, a loose sleeve and afixed ratchet mounted upon the feed-shaft, a rod for connecting the sleeve and the driving-shaft, a pawl mounted movablyyin the sleeve adapted to contact the ratchet and having two adjacent grooves cut into it, a stud, or studs mounted in the sleeve to engage one or the other of the grooves, a spring or springs for engaging the stud, or studs to hold them in engagement with the pawl, a tripping device'- carried by the apron to contact the pawl at a predetermined point and raise it up and carry the stud or studs into the lower of the grooves to out 01f the feed.
