Be it known that I, MARTIN METCALF, ofthe city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Machines forGrooving and SwagingSheet Metals; vand I do hereby'declare that the following is a full andexactideseription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a prole view of th'elrnachinawithA alength of piperepresented passing into the same.
Figure 2 is a front view of them'achine, showing the'loonstrnetion and operation of the rollers for making the seam.
The nature of my invention consists in providing'a sheet-metal grooving and swaging-machine with suitable grooving, swaging, and setting-down rollers, and arranged in such a manner that the 'plate to be grooved or cylinder to be locked andfswaged, is drawn into th'e machine hetweentwo rollers, beinggrooved'as it passes in, whereit is swag-ed or beaded, and its small end swaged in, so as to readily enter another cylinder or pipa-and inretnrning out of the machine the seam is closed down perfectly tight and smooth, so that a perfectly-finished length of pipe is delivered from the machine at one operation of the same. i
To enable 'others skilled in the art to. construct` and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.'l
In the drawings, A A, fig. 1, represent the main frame of the machine.

The groove-roller will now' be in its proper place o n the convex K roller 4 in the lower arm of frame A. With the locks together on the entering end, at least, the operator will turn the crank in the direction shown by the arrow, iig. 1, which'will draw the seam through between the rollers and on tothe frame-arm carrying the convex roller 4, as shown by the dotted lines, at'the same time forming avery perfect lock throughout its whole length.

Taking hold of the right-hand lever-end of the clamp C C, iig. 1,`witl1 the left hand, a slightpressure on the lever b will .release the pin in its opposite end from the slotf, so that the small frame may be oscillated by throwing the leverback until the side of clamp C C, suitably o shaped for that purpose, strikes a pin, n, in the frame A. The little finger lets loose .now of the small lever and the spring on itsunderside fcrcesthe pin inits opposite end into the slotfof the large frame A,securely I holding the parts in this position.,
