PATENT OFFICE.
CASKET-INCLOSING CASE- SPECIFIGA'IIONfor-ming part of Letters Patent No. 785,380, dated March,21, 1905.
Application filed September 15,1904. Serial No. 224,513. v
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN D. RIISON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Pepperell, county of MiddleseX. State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Casket-Inclosing Cases, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a casket-inclosing case containing novel means for locking the cover on the body of the case and sealing the cover air-tight onto the body of the case.
Figure 1, in end view and section, illustrates a casket-inclos'ing case partially broken out to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail showing part of the cover and body of the case with the cover in position to be moved to cause the cover to be locked to the body, and Fig. 3 shows the cover closed and locked.
The body A of the casket-inclosing case is composed of metal, as is the cover B, and the body and cover may be of any usual shape and size. The edge of the cover is shaped to present a flange 6, having a depending lip 6, and depending below the flange is a hook 6 forming part of a locking device, the hook being shown as connected with the flange by a rivet 6 Preferably the hook will follow the flange and be shaped to correspond with the exterior of the body of the case; but my invention would not be departed from if several independent books should be substituted for the long hook extending parallel with the body of the case about the same.
The body of the case sustains a metallic trough O, one edge of which is shown as bent, as at O, to hook over the edge of the body, and thereafter suitable rivets C are inserted through the trough and body. The trough is bent to receive a luting compound which in its plastic state is crammed into said trough, which is entered by the hook b the luting drying and hardening after the hook has been inserted therein and the trough being so shaped or constructed that its opposite edge 0 is free to yield to the projection 5* of the hook as the latter is pushed into the trough, that the trough or a connected part thereof abuts the shoulder of the hook and locks the cover in position on the body, the luting when set sealing the joint air and liquid tight. The lip I), as the cover is seated on the upper edge of the body, flts the exterior of the trough, as represented in Fig. 3. The trough is extended about the exterior of the body.
Prior to this invention the body of -a case has had a series of rigid projections located in a trough secured to the exterior of the case and spring-catches carried by the cover have engaged the stationary projections; but in my invention part of the trough yields to the rigid hook carried by the case, and as I have chosen to illustrate my invention the distance between the point where the trough is connected with the case and its edge 0 that yields to the hook, is so remote from the case that metal is afforded to spring or yield sufficiently to enable the hook to pass below the edge and the edge to then fly out to engage the hook.
The troughs of the body and ends present trough one edge of which is sustained by the case, the opposite edge of the trough being inturned and free to yield to the passage of the hook into the trough.
3. A cover having a flange provided with a downturned lip and a depending hook con1- Intestimony WhereofIhave signed my name bined With a oasket-inclosing ease having a to this specification in the presence of two sub- 10 trough one edge of Which is sustained by the scribing Witnesses. case, the opposite edge of the trough being inturned and free to yield to the passage of the hook into the trough, and luting in said trough Witnesses:
to seal the cover air and liquid tight onto the GEO. W. GREGORY,
JOHN D. RIPSON.
