Letters Patent- No. 78,517,- dated June 2, 1868. f
.IMFROVEMENT IN censure-stoves.
Tait 5x11271111 nfrmh tn in tigers litters am Hithm'nlai xg part at the SW62.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY oononhri:
Be it known that I,,WIL LIAM DOYLE, of the city-of Albany, inthe countyof Albany, end State of New York, here-invented a new and improved Cooking-Stove; and I do herehy'deolere that the iiollowin g is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof,- reference being-had to the accompanying drnwings,' making a, part of this -be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is o. perspective view of my invention, with the front, top, side, andoven -plates left out, so as to show better the arrengement of the tines in, the stove. I v Figure 2 is a vertical central section of stove.
. Figure dis a horizontelseotion through bottom fines of stoves. Figure 4 is a perspective view of flue-stopper B and extension-flue G.
' Figure 5 is a-view of another form of flue O. v 7
The principal objeot of my invention'is so to construct 3,-C0bkiflg-Si2OVQ that a, more uniform distribution of heat may be given .to all parts of the oven, the front as well :is the top, back, and 'botto m of the same, us will Another object of iny'inrention'is to provide a. better boilingand broiling zirrnngementin cooking-stoves, andalso, by an ,eqnnble' distribution of the drought-from the fire, to insure afmore perfect combustion of the fuel, and nlso greater economy in the use of the some, as will be hereinafterdescribed.
An-otherobject of my invention is so to arrangeaLdescendingfront-flue, and to-eoinbineit with thedireot portion of it return or revertible flue in the bottom oi o. cooking-stove, that the whole iney becontrolled zind operated by one damper, aswill be hereinafter described. I l I I i To enable others skilled in theert tonnderstzmd myinvention,I willdescribe its construction andoperation. In the accompanying drawings, A represents a. flue in the front of the stove, and formed between the firebox D andi'ront plate .U,- end extending from side to side of the stove, as showniinfigJl. This fine may be me'deto occupy only the two front corners of the stove, as shown by curved 1ines,--g "q in fig. 1, and all thetj portion of the'flue extendingecross the front of the stove, from corner flues gg, may be made simply an airk chem-berg but I prefer to have itull one fine, ttnd open at the top, from end to end of the fire-box, as shown in fig. 1.
Below the fire box D, flu'e'A is divided intotwo portions, and carried downthe two front corners of the stove, to the ash-plate M, as shownnt X, in fig. 2. Below ash-plate M the two corner fines, A A, reunite, nnd'form cross-flue orchamher, H, as shown in fig. 3. Flue or chamber 11 is formed on oneside by the front oven-plnte I .B, and on the other by the front plate U, its top by part of esh plnte M, 'and itsbottom by the bottom of the stove; itlias a flue-stopper, N, made in the usual manner, all as shown in figs. 2 and 3. I
Within ohomber or flue H, and through front ovenplete B, I provide a flue-stopper, '13, shown 'in fig, 4, having flue-plates a nttaehed'to it. Said plates aere u nitedat their top edges, nndwide'ep nrt at their bottoms forming a triangulnr-shapederjtension-flue, C, as shown in figs. 1, 3, and 4.
Said extension-fluefl projeots about six inolies from front oven-plnteB into the direct portion'of revertible the F, and a. little beyond their out ends of iiue-strips O, in the bottom'of the stove, .:is shown in fig. 3, .Fl C may bemade square, as shown in fig. 5, hering'edditionul flue-strips, b,plnced above flue-strips a, to continue andconneot the some" to the bottom Oren-plate, or flue C maybe extended nenrlyto the bask of thefstove; but
I prefer the form shown in figfl.
Thus it will be seen that the products of oombusti'on moly'pass from the front of the fire-box, down flues A to ash-pleteM, wherethey reunite within chamber or cross-flue H,-thence they will be conducted, by extension fine 0, into the .lireet-il1augl1tflue F, a nd thericeto Outlet K, at the topnnd back part of the stove, in the usual manner. I Q i I I It will be seen from the nher t: that the operation of my invention-will he as follows:
The fire is started upon the grate in the nsual manner, und fuel supplied through the front holes .in the top of the stove, the damper being turned down, soas toallowtbe'fire to kindle quickly. when the fuel is well ignited,- damper 1 is turned up or closed, as sho'wn in fig, 1, when the draught or current of heated air, and th.e products of combustion, .will pass fromthe front'nnd the back of the fire-box, as shown by the. arrows in figs. 1 and 2. Those on the front of-the stove show how the heat is carried down 'the front of the stove, heating the front oven-plate B, and entering thebottom of the stove, as shown in fig. 3, forming a continuous front descending and direct draught. And .the arrows, passing over the top oven-plate, and down the back of the stove, and under the'oven into flue F, and thence upwards into exit-flue K, show how the heat and the products of combustion are carried over the top, down the back, and under the bottom'of the oven, ina common thrce-flue'stove.
'By iny invention, the centre of the fire,- which is iinmediately under the vessel to be heated, as shown in fig- 2, is clearer, and therefore hotter than it otherwise would be, and it islbetter, not only for boiling, but also for broiling, and all other culinary purposes. I l
By this arrangement and constructionof a store, I am enabled to obtain a gnore perfect combustion of the fuel than in ordinary stoves, and therebeing less waste produced in consequence of this better combustion, it is evident that it will also give greater economy.
' There is also produced by my invention a more equable distribution of heat through" the oven, which is very desirable in this class of stoves. v
I I do'not claim in a cooking-stove causing the products ot' combustion to. pass from both sides-of the tire.
'box, nordo I claim a front descending flue.
Having described my invention, what I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The construction and arrangement of extension-fiueC, in combination with a revertibic or return-flue,
F, under the oven of a cooking-stove, substantially as shown and described. I
2. Flue-stopper B, in combination with flue-plates a of extension-flue C, when, constructed as and for the purpose set forth. I e V I v 3. The construction andarrangementof front descending flues A A, incombi'nation with xtensionj-fiueG, substantially as sct'forth. I e v 4. The arrangement and combination of front descending .fluc's A A, cross or connecting-flue H, extensionflue C, and revcrtiblo fiuc F, substantially as shown and described.
5, ,Thefconstruqti'on and arrangement of a front descending and direct flue or fines, A A, and cross-flue H,
united by extension-flue C with a revertible 'fiue, F, under the oven of a cooking-stove, when all of said fines are operated and controlled by on e damper, P, substantially as set forth. WM. DOYLE.
