PATENT OFFICE.
AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER AND ALARM SYSTEM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,669, dated March 14, 1905.
To (LZZ whom, it nan/y concern:
Be it known that we,JAMEs Frnnnsresiding at Torry Sawmills, Crombie Road, and JOHN FoRDYoE WVATT, residing at 20 Grampian Road, Torry, Aberdeen, Scotland, subjects of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented a certain newand useful Automatic Fire-Sprinkler and Alarm System, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic fire-eX- tinguishing apparatus of the kind described in the specification of the United States Patent applications Serial Nos. 186,017 and 194,494. In said application Serial No. 194,49A there is shown and described apparatus comprising a stretched metal wire which upon abnormal rise of temperature releases a pivoted lever, so as to fracture a tubular glass dome or bulb or other frangible device normally closing the sprinkler-outlet.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simplified construction wherein the lever that stretches said wire is formed Without a joint and is slotted at its end to embrace the dome, so that upon release of the lever, owing to expansion of the wire, the said lover will fall with certainty and without having to overcome frictional resistance, and thus insure that the dome is instantly fractured.
1n the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 an end view, of the improved sprinkler apparatus.
As shown, the said apparatus comprises a metal wire a, connected at both ends to screwthreaded eyebolts or pins (4, adjustably secured to brackets which in turn are adjustably mounted on the branch water-pipe 0 equidistant from the discharge-box 5. A tubular glass or other frangible dome or bulb b is by means of a gland or cap secured in such wise as to normally close the outlet of the discharge-box 6 without employing a sprinklervalve, the said dome being embraced by uprising arms b supporting the sprayer-plate 72 Surrounding the dome is a slotted lever f, bent downwardly, as shown, and having a weight f formed integral therewith or firmly attached thereto at its opposite end. The
said slotted lever is formed without a joint, so as to insure certainty of operation, and is supported from the taut wire a by means of a pin a having an eye or loop (1/ through which said wire (6 passes and wherein the wire may be soldered to said pin, said pin (1 entering a recess or notch in the weighted partf of the lever f and at its other end engaging a socket at the junction of the arms V.
Uprising from the levelf is a crutch partf, integral with said lever, the forked of which crutch embraces the pin a and bears against the sprayer-plate b". \Vhen on sudden rise of temperature th e wire sags at its center, tlfie pin (f'is slowly tilted downward until said pin slips out of engagement with the recess in the weighted end f of the lever f. The said lever f is now free to fall and will fall with considerable force, snapping off in its descent the top of the glass dome b, and so opening the sprinklers-outlet.
A chain may be' provided to prevent the weighted'lever from falling away altogether after breaking the dome. The said dome b is made to Withstand considerable internal pressure, but may have a filed incision, so as to insure an even fracture when the lever f falls.
Having now described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a fire-sprinkler the combination with a water-pipe having a discharge-outlet of a frangible dome normally closing said outlet, a jointless slotted lever embracing said dome, means for supporting said lever and automatically releasing said lever on sudden rise of temperature, so as to fracture said dome.
2. Automatic fire-extinguishing apparatus comprising, in combination, a sprinkler, a dome of frangible material normally preventing the discharge of water from said sprinkler, a metallic wire, and a jointless lever having a slot embracing said dome and supported from said wire but automatically released on sag of said Wire due to expansion to fracture said dome.
3. Automatic fire-extinguishing apparatus, comprising, in combination, a sprinkler, a dome of frangible material normally preventing the discharge of water from said sprinkler, a jointless Weighted lever having a slot embracing said dome, a metal wire, and a catch supporting said lever from said wire and adapted on expansion of said wire to release said lever to'iracture said dome, substantially as described.
l. Automatic lire-extinguishing apparatus, comprising, in combination, a sprinkler, a dome of frangible material normally preventing the discharge of water from said sprinkler, a jointless weighted lever having a slot embracing said dome, a metal wire, adjustable supports for the ends oi. said wire, and a catch supporting said lever from said wire and adapted to release said lever to fracture said dome on expansion of said wire, substantially as described.
5. Automatic ire-extinguishing apparatus, comprising, in combination, a sprinkler, a frangible dome normally preventing discharge of water from said sprinkler, a jointless weighted lever having a slot embracing v said dome, a metal wire, a pin entering a recess in the weighted end of said lever and a recess in a stationary part of said sprinkler, and supporting said lever from said wire, and adapted to release said lever on expansion of said wire.
l l l l l 6. Automatic fire-extinguishing apparatus, comprising, in combination, the water-pipe 0, the discharge-box Z) on said pipe, the frangible dome 7) normally preventing passage of water from said box 6 the lever f, f, having a slot embracing said dome b. the stretched wire (L and the pin a, supporting said lever f, ,7" from said wire (6 as shown and described.
7. Automatic lire-extinguishing apparatus, comprising, in combination, the water-phge 0, the discharge-box Lon said pipe 0, the frangible dome bnormally preventing passage of water from said box 6, arms b surrounding said dome, the sprayer-plate supported by said arms, the stretched wire (a, the eyebolts a to which the ends of said wire are connected, brackets 2 on said pipe 0, the lever f, f, f having a slot embracing said dome o, and the pin a a? supporting said lever from said wire, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
