CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,668, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed May 5, 1904. Serial No. 206,455.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs J. EVANs, of East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Brakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description.
My invention relates to car-brakes.
More particularly, my improvements have special reference to emergency-brakes for wheeled vehicles.
The invention consists of the following combination and construction of parts, the details of which will first be fully described and the features of novelty then set forth and claimed.
Figure 1 representsahorizontal section and partial plan view of a car-truck to which my improvements have been applied. Fig. 2is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the car-truck. Fig. 4 is a side elevation and partial section.
In the drawings, 1 represents the frame of a truck, 2, axles and wheels journaled in the frame 1; 3, a shaft intermediate of axles 2; 4, rolling contact-wheels upon shaft 21 in line with the rails; 5, the track-rails; 6, frictioncones on shaft 21; 7 depressions in the faces of wheels 4 corresponding to the frictioncones 6; 8, journal boxes on the frame; 9, shafts journaled in boxes 8; 10, toggle-links having bearings at their inner ends for the shaft 21; 11, knuckle-joints at the outer ends of toggle-links 10, carried by the shafts 9; 12, springs acting constantly to force the shafts 9 and their journal-boxes 8 toward each other; 13. abutments at the outer ends of the springs 12; 14, a slotted or forked extension of the friction-cone embracing shaft 3 to preventthe rotation of the cone; 15, bell-crank levers pivoted at 16; 17, forked downward extensions of levers 15 in contact with the inner faces of friction-cones 6; 18, an oscillating arm rigidly fixed to one of the shafts 9; 19, a horizontal link lying below the inner or free end of arm 18; 20, pivoted toggle-links connecting the inner ends of both bell-crank levers 15 with the link 19; 21, the shaft in which wheels 4, friction-cones 6, and toggle-links are journaled; 22, a chain for each of the pairs of toggle-links 10, secured at one end to the shaft 3 and at the other to the linkbearings on shaft 21; 23, a toothed segment fast on shaft 3; 24, the counter-shaft; 25, a pinion fast on counter-shaft 24, engaging the segment 23; 26, arms rigid with shaft 9, extending in opposite directions therefrom; 27, brake-rods connecting arms 26 and leading to any type of brake-operating mechanism 28; 29, boxes on shaft 3, to which the levers are pivoted; 30, sections of self-hardening steel insertedin the tread of wheels 4; 31, short links pivoted to shafts 9 and to links 10, permitting a toggle action of links 10 and 31.
The seats for the springs 12 may be formed on links 10 or 31, preferably the former.
Proceeding with the drawings, 34 is a pawl rigidly fixed to shaft 9; 35, a detent on the segment-block 23.
The emergency-brake is applied from either end of the car by operating the hand mechanism 28, so as to release the pawl 34 from the detent 35. The springs 12 are thereby free to act to move the opposite pair of toggles toward each other, thereby depressing the contact-wheel 4into contact with the rail with a power sufficient to take up part of the load of the car upon the rails. The depression of the shaft 21, which carries the contact-wheels 4, causes the chains 22 to unwind and the segment-block 23 to rotate clockwise. The arm 18 upon one of the shafts 9 is depressed by the hand mechanism 28, thereby depressing the inner ends of the bell-crank levers 15 and forcing the friction-cones on the shaft 21 into frictional contact with the contact-wheels 4.
The application of the contact-wheels 4 upon the rails with their hardened contact-faces 30, together with the frictional application of the cones 6 to said wheels, constitutes a powerful braking mechanism, which is capable of cansing a quick and reliable stopping of the car.
To release the brakes, a hand-lever is placed upon the counter-shaft 24, its pinion meshing with segment 23, which causes the segment 23 to rotate sufficiently to bring the pawl 34 again within the detent 35. This operation raises the contact-wheel 4 by means of the chains 22 and brings the springs 12 through the toggles again under compression for the successive application of the emergency-brake.
The drawings and description of my improved brake above given are n'ierely an exemplilication of one means of carrying out my invention. It is obvious that the mechanical details of the principle of the construction herein embodied may be variously modified and will come within the domain of my invention.
The invention is not limited to cars which run upon a track. .lt may be applied to vehicles used upon common highways.
The hand-brake is capable of supplying just the amount of friction that the braking exigency of occasion requires, be it quick or slow.
WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an emergency-brake, the combination of a vehicle, a brake-wheel, automatically-operated power-driven means for bringing said wheel into contact with the highway, means for normally suspending the operation of the power-driven means, and means for releasing said power-driven means.
2. In an emergency-brake, the combination of a vehicle, a rotary brake-wheel, automatically-operated power-driven means for bringing said wheel into rolling contact with the highway, means for normally suspending the operation of the power-driven means, and means for releasing said power-driven means.
3. In an emergency-brake, the combination of a vehicle, a brake-wheel, automatically-operated power-driven means for bringing said wheel into contact with the highway, means for normally suspending the operation of the power-driven means, and hando1i erated means for releasing said power-driven means.
4. In an c1nergency-brake, the combination of a vehicle, a brake-wheel, springs for bringing said wheel into contact with the highway, means for normally suspending the operation of said springs, and means for releasing said springs.
5. The combination of a vehicle, a brakewheel, springs adapted to bring the wheel into engagement with the highway, a brake-wheel shaft, links connected to the shaft and to the springs, means for normally suspending the operation of said springs, and means for throwing said suspending means out of operation.
6. The combination of a vehicle, a brake- Wheel, power-driven means for bringing said wheel into contact with the highway, a brakewheel shaft, a second shaft disposed above the brake-wheel shaft, flexible means connected to the brake-wheel shaftand to the second shaft for normally restraining the action of said power-driven means, and means for throwing the restraining means out of operation.
7. The combination of a vehicle, a brakewheel, springs for bringing said wheel into contact with the highway,a brake-Wheel shaft, a second shaft disposed above the brake-wheel shaft, flexible means connected to the brakewheel shaft and to the second shaft for normally restraining the action of said powerdriven means, and means for throwing the restraining means out of operation.
8. The combination of a vehicle, a brake- Wheel, springs adapted to bring the Wheel into engagement with the highway, a brakewheel shaft, links connected to the shaft and to the springs, a second shaft disposed above the brake-wheel shaft,flexible means connected to the brake-wheel shaft and to the second shaft for normally restraining the action of said power-driven means,and means for throwing the restraining means out of operation.
9. The combination of a vehicle, a brakewheel, springs adapted to bring the Wheel into contact with the highway, a brake-wheel shaft, links connected to the shaft and to the springs, means for normally suspending the operation of said springs, and a pawl and segment for releasing said springs.
10. The combination of a vehicle, a brakewheel, power-driven means for bringing said wheel into contact with the highway, a brakewheel shaft, a second shaft disposed above the brake-wheel shaft, flexible means connected to the brake-wheel shaft and to the second shaft for normally restraining the action of said power-driven means, and a pawl and segment for releasing said springs.
11. The combination of a vehicle, a brakewheel, a brake-wheel shaft, oppositely-disposed links journaled to said shaft, links journaled to the frame and pivotally connected to the aforementioned links, springs adapted to operate said links and force the brake-Wheel into contact with the highway, and means for normally suspending said brake-wheel.
12. In an emergency-brake, the combination of a vehicle, a brake-wheel, power-driven means for bringing said Wheel into contact with the highway, means for normally suspending the operation of the power-driven means, means for releasing said power-driven means and means for applying frictional contact between the brake-Wheel and the vehicle.
13. The combination of a vehicle, a brakewheel, power-driven means for bringing said wheel into contact with the highway, means for normally suspending the operation of the power-driven means, means for releasing said power-driven means and means independent of the wheel contact for applying frictional contact between the brake-Wheel and the vehicle.
14. The combination of a vehicle, a brakewheel, springs adapted to bring the Wheel into contact with the highway, means for normally suspending the operation of the springs,
means for releasing said springs, and means for applying frictional contact between the brake-wheel and the vehicle.
