PATENT OEEIcE.
FENCE-POST NI OLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 784,667, dated March 14;, 1905. Application filed October 28, 1904. Serial No. 230,419.
To (0% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. ENGSTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Post Molds; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates toiniprovements in fence-post molds.
The object of the invention is to provide a mold in which fence-posts may be cast or formed from any suitable plastic material, means being provided whereby said material may be firmly tamped into the mold and means whereby the completed post may be quickly and easily removed from the mold.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure -1 is a side elevation of the mold, showing the plunger in elevated position. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the plunger in lowered position and a post formed in the mold. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the parts in a position for removing a completed post. Fig. l is a transverse vertical sectional view on a line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view on a line 5 5 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the machine, showing in full lines the parts in position for forming a post and in dotted lines the position of the parts for the removal of a post.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes uprights or standards which are connected together near their lower ends by means of a longitudinally-disposed bar 2, upon which is supported, by means of incline pivot-arms 3, a substantially triangularlyshaped trough 4, which forms one section of the mold. The trough 4 consists of a bottom section or strip 5, to one edge of which is rigidly secured an inclined board 6, forming one of the sides of the mold, and on the other end of said bottom edge is arranged an inclined board 7, which boards are supported in position by means of V-shaped brace-bars 8. To the brace-bars 8 are secured the upper ends of pivotedarms 3.
On the upper ends of the standards 1 is arranged a plunger-carrying frame 9, said frame being hingedly connected to said standards by means of plates or bars 10, fixed on the ends of the frame and pivotally connected at their lower ends to the standards 1, so that when said frame is in an upright position the same will rest upon the upper ends of the standards 1 and when swung laterally thereon will be supported by said straps or bars 10. The lateral movement of said bars 10 and frame 9 is limited by means of a stop-pin 12. The frame 9 is here shown as formed of vertically-disposed upright bars 13, which are connected near their upper ends by a crossbar let. On the inner sides of the upright bars 13 are slidably mounted plunger-carrying blocks 15, which are connected by a plunger-bar 16. On one edge of each block 15 is arranged a vertically-disposed rack-bar 17, with which are adapted to mesh spur gearpinions 18. The pinions 18 are fixed upon a longitudinally-disposed shaft19, which is journaled in suitable bearings 20, secured to the adjacent edges of the upright bars 13. On one end of the shaft 19 is arranged a crank-handle 21, whereby said shaft may be revolved to cause said pinions to engage the teeth of said rackbars, thus raising and lowering the plunger-blocks 15 and plunger 16. On the inner face of the standards 1 and upright bars 13 are arranged guide- rods 22 and 23, whereby said plunger-blocks are guided and held in position. On the upper side of the plunger-bar 16 is arranged a longitudinally-disposed weight, which extends from oneend of said bar to the other, whereby an equal pressure will be exerted by the plunger when the same is engaged with the post. On the under side of the plunger is arranged a rib 24 and a longitudinally-disposed series of downwardly-projecting pins 25. \Vhen said plunger is brought into engagen'ient with the post 111 the mold said pins are forced through the same and through guide openings 26,
formed in the bottom strip 5 of the moldtrough. The openings thus formed in the post by the pins serve to permit the line-wires of the fence to be passed through the post.
In forming a post the parts are brought to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, wherein the plunger has been raised to its highest position, after which the mold-trough is filled with cement or other plastic material After that the plunger is allowed to descend upon the plastic mass within said trough. thereby pressing the same into a firm compact form, said plunger being successively raised and dropped upon said mass, thus tamping and packing the same evenly throughout the entire length of the trough. After the post thus formed has begun to set the plunger is raised by means of the crank-shaft, as hereinbefore described, until the same has reached the limit of its upward movement, after which the frame 9 is swung laterally upon the standards 1 to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings, in which position the same will be entirely clear of the mold-trough, thereby permitting the same to be swung to one side upon the pivotal connections of the arms 3 and into engagement with the supporting cross-bars 27. The bars 27 are arranged upon the connectingbar 2 of the standards I, by which said trough will be supported while the post is being removed from the trough, which is readily accomplished by lifting the side board 7, which now forms the bottom supporting-board of the post. Said board is readily removed from the supporting brace-bars 8, and on said board the post is allowed to remain until lirmly hardened and set, another board being arranged upon the brace-boards 8 in place of the one removed, after which the trough is swung back to its operative position. The trough4 is held in an operative position by means of a hook 28, which is pivotally mounted upon the upper end of a bar 29 and is adapted to be hooked into engagement with a pin 30 arranged on the upper edge of the side board 6 of the trough, said side board being adapted to engage the bar 29, which forms a support for this side of the trough. To the side board (3 of the trough may be also secured handbars 31, whereby the trough may be more readily upset to permit the movement of a finished post therefrom.
As hereinbeforc stated, the parts of the mold are preferably so arranged and constructed to form a substantially triangular-shaped post, said parts being also shaped to form a tapering post, whereby the base of the same will be coi'isiderably larger than the upper end. It will be obvious that by forming the parts of the mold in a different shape and arranging the same in other positions various-shaped posts may be formed by the machine.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes n the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
