SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,593, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed July 21, 1904. Serial No. 217,511.
To a, whom, it Duty concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. REsoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vanwert, in the county of Vanwert and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Pump,o'f which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character in which the pump-cylinder will have a movement equal and in opposition to the movement of the pump-rod,whereby the stroke of the latter during the pumping operation will be reduced one-half, while at the same time the force exerted for lifting the water and expelling it through the stand-pipe will be equalized and rendered more uniform and at the same time materially increased.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of a pump embodying the invention, illustrating the position of the parts at the completion of the upstroke of the pump-rod. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the parts at the completion of the downstroke of the pump-rod.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the cover of a well or cistern containing the body of water to be acted upon, and 2 the standpipe, extended vertically downward through the cover and connected at its lower end by an elbow 3 with the pump-cylinder 4, the pipe 2 being provided at its upper end with a discharge-nozzle 5 and between its ends beneath the cover 1 with a flexible portion or section 6, composed of rubber hose or the like.
Attached beneath the cover 1 is a pair of appropriately-spaced castings or bearings 7, in which are pivoted, respectively, the upper ends of a pair of vertically-depending links or hangers 8, the lower ends of which are bifurcated for the reception of horizontal pintles or axles 10, upon which are pivoted or fulcrumed the meeting ends of two pairs of toggle-levers, of which each pair comprises an upper member or lever 11 and a lower member or lever 12, the inner ends of the'upper levers 11 being pivoted, as at 13, to an upper casting or collar 14, fixed to a verticallyreciprocatory pump or plunger rod 15, while the inner ends of the lower members or levers 12 are similarly pivoted to a lower casting or collar 16, which loosely embraces and through which the rod may move freely. The levers 11 serve, through the fixed engagement of the collar 14 with the rod, to sustain the latter, which has at its lower end a plungerhead or sucker 17, adapted for, reciprocation within the cylinder 4, and in order that the parts may be adjusted for varying the stroke of the plunger within the cylinder the collar is preferably adjustably fixed upon the rod 15 by means of a set-screw l8.
Attached to the casting or collar 16 is a pair of depending links or hangers 19, which are bolted or otherwise secured at their lower ends to and serve to sustain the cylinder 4, upon the upper open end of which is attached a cross-piece or guide 20, having a central guide-opening through which the pump-rod passes and in which it moves, while through the lower end of the cylinder 4 there is formed an inlet opening or port 21, over which is disposed upon the interior of the cylinder an outwardly-closing flap-valve 22, designed to close the port during the downstroke ot' the plunger 17.
Within the elbow 3 is provided a valve-chamber 23, containing an outwardly-closing flapvalve 24, designed to close communication between the stand-pipe 2 and cylinder 4 during the upstroke of the pump-plunger.
The rod 15 may of course be reoiprocated in any appropriate manner, but is shown herein as being provided on its upper end with a foot-piece or shoe 25, designed to receive the foot of the operator for manually actuating the rod.
In practice upon the downstroke of the pump-rod the levers 11 will move downward, while a simultaneous and equal upward movement of the levers 12 will occur. Thus as the pump-plunger moves downward the cylinder 4, which is connected by the hangers 19 with and carried by the levers 12, will. move upward, thereby reducing by one-half the length of stroke necessary for the plunger to travel throughout the length of and expel all the water from the cylinder 4, while upon the reverse or up stroke of the plunger an equal movement of the cylinder in the opposite or downward direction will occur, and the cylinder will be completely filled with water by a stroke of the plunger one-half as great as would otherwise be necessary.
Between the two collars 1 6 and 18 is arranged a compression-spring 30, by which the collars are separated when pressure on the treadle is relieved.
It is apparent from the foregoing that there is produced a device in which the power necessary for filling the cylinder and expelling the Water therefrom through the stand-pipe is equalized and materially increased comparative with the amount of energy expended, while at the same time the pumping stroke of the plunger-rod is largely decreased in comparison with the devices heretofore in use. In attaining these ends it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a pump, the combination with a platform, of a stand-pipe, a movable cylinder, a plunger reciprocating therein, and toggle-levers pivoted to the platform and operatively connected to the cylinder and plunger for reciprocating said cylinder and plunger in reverse directions.
2. In a pump, a stand-pipe, a movable cylinder,a plunger reciprocating therein,rneans for 'moving the cylinder and plunger in reverse directions on the downstrokc of the latter, and means for automatically reversing the direction of movement of said cylinder on the upstroke of the plunger.
3. In a pump, the combination with a platform, of a stand-pipe, a movable cylinder, a plunger reciprocating therein, toggle-levers pivoted to the platform for moving the cylinder and plunger in reverse directions on the downstroke of the latter, and a spring for automatically reversing the direction of movement of said cylinder on the upstroke of the plunger.
4. In a pump, the combination with a platform, of a movable cylinder, a standpipe, a flexible liquid-conducting tube connecting the cylinder and stand-pipe,a pair of links pivoted to the platform, and toggle-levers pivoted to said links and operatively connected to the cylinder and plunger for reciprocating said cylinder and plunger in reverse directions.
5. In a pump, the combination with a platform, of a stand-pipe, a movable cylinder, a plunger reciprocating therein, collars mounted on said plunger, depending links pivoted to the platform, toggle-levers pivoted to said links and collars, respectively, for reciprocating the cylinder and plunger in reverse directions, and a spring carried by the plunger and interposed between said collars.
