Season, of Union City, inthe county of Broome, and SEatB'Of NG W York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Taking Up and Delivering Mail-Bags by i Railway-Cars in Motion; and Isle hereby declare that the following is a full; clear, and exact'description of the some, reference being had to the 'annexod drnwings, moking part of'this specificstion, in ,which-- Figure 1 is n perspective view. I Figure 2 is a vertical transversesection. Figure 3 is u. perspective'vievv of the arms from which the bag is taken.

The same letters in all the fignres are used to designate the some parts. This improvementisintended for npplicntion tonsil-cars on railways, and is intended for use. indelivering and taking up mail-hogs at stations whe -e the trains do not stop. Its. nature will appear from tho't'ollowing specification and claims.

A is an ordinni'y' pos t-ofiice car. It is constructed with a' sliding section, B, on its side, made to slide in ond out on ways, so ca te-extend for enough beyond the car when projected to receive the mail-begs, and to contain thoae to be delivered in the space'outside of theplane of the side of the car.

The bags and pouches to be delivered are piled upon the trap door G, in the'hottoin'of the sliding section- The trapdoor is supported npon a swinging a m, D, which projects at right angles to the side of the car, This sz'm,as the cor passes along, is shifted by striking against the post D, thus disengaging the trap-door, and'permitting it'to fall and drop the n'iail outside of the'track, the doc: acting as s chute to direct the bags away from the car. The. bags, in falling, are received in a hex, K, placed alongside of the'road, for' the purpose. The slide F is hinged to the side of the section B, nnd' lies in; on inclined position upon the top of the pouches and bags to he delivered.

G is an armcttachcd to a post. It'hns one or more books G, attached to it adjnstably, so that they inay 7 be reversed, in order to deliver mails upon cars travelling in eitherxdirection. The moilfbagssre toihe hung ilfcln these books. I i

As the car passes, the rod H, stteched to it, will strike the bag and di-aw it front-the hook, when it will fall upon the slide F, and be delivered in the intoiioi' of: the car.

I is'a shntter closing the end of the section when drown out, to prevent the bags from being thrown out of the sliding section by the force of the concussion.-

The box K, which receives the bugs delivered from the car, has-a cover. K' .,o'vcr port of its length,-to receive and confine the hngs,'so that they cannot fall upon the-track.

The sliding section may be operated by 'onyconv'enicnt mechanism on the inside of the car.

What I claim as my invention, nnd desire to secure by Letters Patent, 15-

1. In combination with a car, A, a sliding section, B, and trap-door C, for delivering the mail, then said dock is disengaged by an arm, D, nctuat ed hy a post on-the'side of the track, and So ai'vang cd that in falling it shall form a chute, to direct the bags in falling away from the track, suhstcntially as dcscl'ibed. 2. The combination and arrangement of the sliding section B, the trap-door C, and slide F, fonsimnltoneously discharging and receiving the mail, substantially as described.
