MACHINE FOR INSULATING ELECTRIC CONDUCTORS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,197, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed August 2, 1904. Serial No. 219,220.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HAWKINS, acitizen of the United States, residing at Long Island City, in the county of Queens andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Insulating Electric Conductors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for insulating wires used for electric conductors; and the object thereof is to provide an apparatus of this class by means of which a conductor wire or Wires may be provided with two coatings or coverings of insulating material; and with this and other objects in view.
the invention consists in an improved machine of theclass specified and in a supplemental machine member or device forming a part thereof, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved wire coating or covering machine; Fig. 2, a back side view of one of the parts thereof, part of the construction being shown in section; Fig. 3, a view of that part of the machine shown in Fig. 2 and looking in the direction of the.
arrow 00, part of the construction being also in section; and Fig. 4, a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of part of the construction shown in Fig. 2 and in the same position.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, reference being made to Fig. 1, I have shown at a and a two wire coating or covering machines known as the Boyle, and

In my improvement, as hereinbefore stated, I employ two of the Royle ma-- chines, and the collar or bushing (Z in the second machine a? is made larger, so that the wire 0 after it has recelved one coat Wlll pass there through, and the rubber or other material in a liquid or plastic condition is forced through the head 7) of the second machine a in the same manner as with the first machine a.
The chief feature of my invention consists of a separate supplemental machine or device 0, two of which are shown in Fig. l and each of which is exactly the same in construction and one of which is placed between the Royle machines a and a and the other at the left of the machine (0 as shown in Fig. 1, and the object of these supplemental machines or devices is to facilitate or. accomplish the result of providing the wire or conductor with two coatings or coverings of insulating material and also to facilitate the feeding of said wire or conductor through the apparatus comprising the separate parts a and a and the additions thereof consisting of said supplemental parts Each of the supplemental machines or devices 6 comprises a hollow upright member or standard 0 at the top of which is a yokemovable block 0 in one side of the head o and in the opposite side of said head is a verticallymovable set-screw e which operates on a bearing-block e", which rests on the opposite end of said top shaft or the end thereof with which one of the wheels 6 is connected, and by means of this construction the wheel a on the top shaft 0 may be given a slight vertical move ment. I The end of the bottom shaft 0 opposite th wheel a thereon is provided with a wormgear f, and at the left-hand side of the upright or standard a is mounted a shaftf provided with a worm f which operates in connection with the worm-gear f. In the bottom of the upright or standard 6 is a short shaft i, provided with an arm 91 through or adjacent to which the inner or front end of the rod it passes, and said rod is provided with a pin 2', in connection with which which holds the pedal-arm a in a depressed I position, and it will be understood that the parts /1/, 6, a and i constitute -a belt-shifting device by means of which a power-belt may be shifted from one of the pulleys or to the other whenever desired, and the object of the arm 75, which is secured to the rod 71, and the guide-pin it? is to prevent the turning of the rod /0. In the position of the parts shown in Fig. 3 the power-belt will be on the loose pulley g and when it is desired to shift said belt onto the fixed pulley g the pedal-arm i is depressed and locked in the depressed position by the'dog o and the parts remain in this position as long as the machine is in operation, and the belt can be shifted to the loose pulley g by simply releasing the dog a from the pedal-arm i The upper end of the sleeve f is provided with two collars j, held in place by set-screws f and between these collars is placed a sup 'plemental sleeve 70, provided at one side with a rack-bar and passing through the upright or standard 0 is a shaft 76", provided with a gear-wheel 7a", which operates in connection with the rack-bar and at the opposite sides of which are flanges or rims between which the rack-bar k fits and moves and which serve to prevent the supplemental sleeve 70 from turning on the sleeve f and the shaft 74 is provided at its opposite end with a worm-gear Zr, and below the worm-gear 7c" is a shaft on at right angles to the shaft 70 and provided with a worm m which operates in connection with the worm-gear k, and the shaft m is provided with a handle or wheel m by which it may be turned.
It will be understoodthat the shaft f is turned by the wheel g operating in connection with the wheel g, and by means of the shaft 70 and the gearing in connection therewith and the rack-bar k 'the sleeve f on the shaft with which the wheel g is connected, may be moved longitudinally of the shaft f and this operation will bring the wheel 9 nearer to or farther from the center of the wheel g according to the direction in which the sleevef is moving, and by means of this construction the speed of the shafts a of the head 6 and with which the grooved wheels 6 are connected, may be regulated or increased or decreased as desired.
In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 one of the supplemental machines or devices 6 is placed between the Royle machines a and a and the other at the left of the Royle machine (4 and by means of this construction the wire 0, as hereinbefore stated, may be provided with two coatings or coverings of insulating material, the first coat or covering being shown at c and the second at 0 It will also be understood that this operation is continuous, the separate parts of the apparatus being placed in line and the wire 0 being continually passed therethrough. The grooved wheels 6 on the supplemental machine or device 0 at the left of the Royle machine a may be larger than loo those on the other supplemental machine or device a, so as to adapt the same to the application of the second coating or covering to the wire 0.
From the construction herein shown and described it will be seen that my improvement consists in the supplemental machine or device 0, two of which are employed in the apparatus shown in Fig.- 1, and in the combination therewith of the Royle machines as shown in Fig. 1 and as herein described.
Having fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl 1. In an apparatus of the class described, a supplemental machine member, comprisinga main upright or standard, two shafts mounted in the top thereof and geared in connection and provided at one end with interoperating grooved Wheels, one of said shafts being also provided at the other end with a worm-gear, an upright shaft mounted adjacent to the main upright or standard and provided withaworm operating in connection with said worm-gear, and means for varying the speed of the upright shaft, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, a supplemental machine member, comprising a main upright or standard, two shafts mount ed in the top thereof and geared in connection and provided at one end with interoperating grooved wheels, one of said shafts being pro vided at the opposite end with a worm-gear, an upright shaft mounted adjacent to the main upright or standard and provided witha worm operating in connection with the worm-gear, a sleeve movable longitudinally on said upright shaft and provided at its lower end with a friction-gear, another shaft mounted horizontally in the main upright or standard and provided at one end with a friction-gear which operates in connection with that on said sleeve, and means for moving said sleeve longitudinally on the upright shaft, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, a supplemental machine member, comprising a main upright or standard, two shafts mounted in the top thereof and geared in connection and provided at one end with interoperating grooved wheels, a worm-gear connected'with the other end of one of said shafts, an upright shaft mounted adjacent to the main upright or standard and provided with a worm operating in connection with the said worm-gear, a main sleeve mounted on the upright shaft and movable longitudinally thereof and pro vided at its lower end with a friction-gear, a shaft horizontally mounted in the bottom of the main upright or standard and provided with a friction-gear operating in connection with that on said sleeve, and means for moving said sleeve longitudinally of the upright shaft comprising a supplemental sleeve mounted on the upper end of the main sleeve and provided with a rack-bar, a horizontal shaft mounted in the main upright or standard and provided with a gear-wheel which operates in connection with said rack-bar, and means for turning said last-named shaft, substantially as shown and described.
