To all whom it may cancern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. CARR, a citi- Zen of the United States. residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
IO My invention relates to an improved apparatus for displaying advertising-cards such as portraits, engravings, printed or such like matter; and the same consists in a simple means whereby the cards are moved into po- I 5 sition to successively expose two cards at a time.
The object of this invention is to construct an advertising-cabinet in which the mechanism for transferring the advertising-cards into position to be exhibited two at a time will be reduced to the simplest form and to a minimum of parts, which mechanism is so compact as to permit a cabinet of very small dimension to inclose said mechanism and which 2 5 mechanism will operate to positively and automatically swing or change the advertisingcards in their order of succession into positionto exhibit their faces alternately. Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a cabinet, showing advertising-cards mounted to be swung into position to be exhibited and the mechanism for driving the same inclosed therein. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken through the line A B. (See Fig. 1.) Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, taken through 4 the line C D (see Fig. 1) and showing the disposition of the display or advertising cards. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevational view of the card operating or transferring mechanism, taken through the line E F (see Figs. 1 and 2) and looking in the direction of the arrow at. The cabinet 1 may be constructed of any suitable material, as wood, and ornamented in any suitable manner, and may be of a size sufficient to conveniently inclose the entire mechanism.
The standards 2 have their lower ends connected by theirbase 3, which latter is secured to the bottom of the cabinet 1, and on the top of the standards 2 is formed integral thereon the semicircular supporting guide 4:, which extends around approximately one-half of a circle. A tubular shaft 5 turns in the bearing 6, formed integral with the semicircular 5 supporting guide or runner 4:, and the axis of the said tubular shaft coincides with the axis of the said circular supporting-guide.
The central portion of the base 3 of the standards 2 is drilled to receive the reduced por- 9 tion 7 of the vertically-extending revoluble shaft 8. The shaft 8 extends through the tube 5, into which it is driven to fit tightly to turn therewith, and said shaft extends to and through the fixed card supporting tube 9, which latter forms a bearing for said shaft,
and said shaft projects through the top end of the tube and through the top end of the cabinet.
The tubular shaft 5 projects above the bearing 6 sufiiciently far to receive the stud-carrying boss 10, and the same is secured thereto to turn therewith in any suitable manner by the set-screw 11.
Integral on the exterior sides of the standards 2, on diametrically opposite sides of the supporting guide or runner 4C, are fOlll'lP-Cl the latch-supporting arms 12 and 13, to which are pivoted the weighted retaining primary and secondary latches 15 and 14L. The primary latch 15 for retaining the swinging card in po sition to expose one of its faces at the left side of the cabinet is provided with the cam-en gaging arm 16, which when engaged by the cam 18 moves or swings the weighted end of the primary latch 15 upwardly to cause the catch end 17 to move downwardly or release the card with which it is in contact to permit the same to be turned over, as a leaf in a book, to expose its other or reversed side by the revoluble card-shifting arm 19.
The revoluble card-shifting arm 19 is pivoted on the stud 20, and said stud 20 is formed integral on the stud-carrying boss 10 and retained thereon by a suitable retaining-screw 21, and said arm is adapted to swing upwardly and downwardly a limited extent and in a direction at right angles with its plane of rotation. The opposite or free end of the said arm 19 is recessed in the form of an inverted U, in which recess is pivoted the friction supporting-roller 22, which roller is adapted to roll on the semicircular guide or runner 4. Integral on the free end of said arm 19 is formed the cam carryingor revolving arm 23, on the end of which is formed integral the cam 18. A card-engaging toe 25 is formed on the top free end portion of the carrying or revolving arm 23, and the same is provided for the purpose of engaging the display-cards one by one to turn them.
The spring 24 has one of its ends secured to the boss 10 and its outer free end arranged to contact with a pin 24:, secured to the free end of the card-shifting arm 19, and the said spring is provided for the purpose of securing the downward movement of the shifting-arm 19 to cause its engaging toe or catch 25 to drop out of engagement with the card when the roller 22 of the arm 19 has reached the end 26 of the semicircular supporting-guide 4.
The initial end of the runner or semicircular supporting-guide 4 is preferably inclined or wedge-formed to more readily receive the friction supporting-roller 22 and also to gradually elevate the same till it reaches the top horizontal plane of the runner or supportingguide 4, and thereby gradually elevate the end of the swinging arm 19 to raise the card-engaging catch 25 to engage one of the cards to move or swing the same into its new position.
On the primary retaining-latch 15, opposite the cam-engaging arm 16 thereof, is formed the retaining arm or stop 16, which latter contacts with the side of the arm 13 to prevent said primary latch 15 dropping or swinging too far in a dowi'iwardly direction to move the arm 16 out of position to be readily engaged bythe cam 18. i
The weighted retaining or secondary latch 14; for retaining the moved or turned card in position to expose one of its faces or its reversed face at the right side of the cabinet is pivoted on the arm 12, and the same is provided on one of its sides with a retaining-arm 28, which is for the purpose of retaining the catch 14 of said latch 14 in position and to prevent the latter swinging or dropping too far out of engaging position.
A worm-wheel 29 is keyed or otherwise secured on the tubular shaft 5, and the same meshes with its drive-worm 30, which latter is securely keyed on the shaft 31.
The shaft 31 has its end 32 adapted to turn in the bearing 33, formed integral with the semicircular supporting-guide 4:. A shroud or cover 34: is formed integral on said bearing and is adapted to cover the under portion of the worm 30, and the same is provided for the purpose of forming an oil-reservoir to supply the runner with a continuous supply of oil or other lubricant. The opposite end of the shaft 31 is journalcd in a suitable bearingstandard 35, which latter is secured to the bottom or base of the cabinet 1. A pulley 36 is keyed on the shaft 31, and the said pulley 36 is rotated by means of a band 37, which extends around the drive-pulley 38, keyed or otherwise secured on the shaft of the motor 39.
The vertically-extending fixed tubular shaft 9 is provided at its bottom end with a collar 10, and on its top end is secured a flange 41, which latter flange il is secured to the inner side of the top of the cabinet 1.
The cards 42 are provided with hinges 13, which latter are adapted to it on the exterior of the fixed vertically-extending tubular shaft 9. At or near the bottom edges of the d isplay or advertising cards 42 are secured the distance or se 'iarating bars 44, one to each card, and the same are provided for the purpose of separating or retaining said cards their proper distances apart, thereby preventing more than one being engaged and disengaged at a time by the catch 25 for each single rotation of the revolvingshifting-arm 19.
I will now proceed to describe the operation of my invention. The shaft 31 is rotated by an electric motor 39 or by any other suitable power to turn the worm-wheel 29 in the direction indicated by the arrow (see Fig. 2) to turn its shaft 5 and all the parts connected thereto in the direction of the arrow gthat is, to turn the display-cards from left to right. Suppose the arm 19 in the position shown in Fig. 2. Then the cam 18 first contacts with the arm 16 of the weighted latch to cause the catch end 17 of the said latch to drop out of engagement with its card to release the same. The revolving shifting-arm 19 being still in motion continues to revolve till the friction supporting-roller 22 thereof engages the initial or cam end 27 of the runner 4 to gradually elevate the free end of the said arm 19 and still further operate the latch 15 to disengage the catch 17 with the card and gradually bring the engaging toe 25 into engagement with the card. The card thus released is free to be engaged by said toe 25 and to be carried and turned from left to right to exhibit its reverse side. The revolving shifting-arm 19 when it has nearly reached the end 26 of the semicircular supporting guide or runner 4 moves the card thus released upon the inclined top portion of the catch 14 to cause the same to move or drop downwardly by reason of the Weight of the card bearing upon it to permit said card to readily pass over the top of the catch 14 of the latch 14. Simultaneously with the engagement of this card by the catch 14 the revolving arm 19 drops downwardly therefrom, assisted in its prompt fall by means of the spring 24, thereby causing the toe 25 to disengage the card thus turned to permit the latter to remain in contact with the catch 14 of the latch 14 in position to expose its face. The revolving shifting-arm 19, having dropped out of its engaging position, is swung around to its former position to engage the next card, and thus two cards have their faces exposed simultaneously during the time the arm 19 is moved or turned through that portion of the semicircular supporting guide or runner'between the disengaging or drop portion and engaging the initial or cam portion thereof. In order that the free end of the arm 19 be prevented from dropping too far or too low to drop the friction-roller 22 in such position to be below the initial incline 27, thereby preventing the roller operating to raise the free end of the revolving shifting-arm 19 to cause the catch 25 to engage the front or exposed card 42 to be turned to expose its reversedside, a stop 45 is formed on the pivotal end of said arm 19 and is adapted to contact with the stop 46, formed on the boss 10, when the said arm 19 has dropped down its full extent, and thereby further downward movement of the free end of said arm is prevented.
Having thus fully described this my invention, what I claim as new. and useful, and desire to cover by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is'
1. In an advertising device, the combination with a vertically-extending fixed shaft and a series of display-cards hinged thereon, of a revoluble card-shifting arm havingits axis of rotation concentric with the axis of the said vertically-extending shaft, card-retaining latches axis of rotation of said revoluble card-shifting arm, means connected to said shifting-arm wherebysaid retaining latches are alternately disengaged from the said cards, acard-engaging catch on said arm, and means for automatically operating said arm to alternately move said catchinto and out of engagement with the card to be turned.
2. In an advertising device, the combination with a vertically-extending fixed shaft and a series of display-cards hinged thereon, of a revoluble card-shifting arm having its axis of rotation concentric with the axis of the said vertically-extending shaft, means for supporting the free end of said revoluble arm, card-retaining latches situated on diametrically opposite sides of the axis of rotation of said revoluble card-shifting arm, means connected to said shifting-arm whereby said retaininglatches are alternately disengaged from said cards, and an engagingcatch on said arm and means for automatically operating said arm to alternately move said catch into and out of engagement with the card to be turned.
3. In an advertising device, the combination with a vertically-extending fixed shaft and a series of display-cards hinged thereon, of a revoluble card-shifting arm having its axis of rotation concentric with the axis of said vertically extending shaft, a semicircular supporting-runner situated beneath the said revoluble arm and concentric with the axis of the latter, primary and secondary card-retaining latches situated on diametrically opposite sides of the axis of rotation of said revoluble card-shifting arm, a card -engaging catch formed integral on the end of said revoluble arm and a cam formed integral on the end of said arm whereby the primary latch is first disengaged and means whereby the card to be shifted is engaged by said engaging catch .to be turned into position and finally to be engaged by said secondary latch.

In an advertising device, the combination with a vertically-extending fixed shaft and a series of vertically-extending cards hinged thereon, and distance or separating bars fixed on said cards to retain them at fixed distances apart, of a semicircular supportingrunncr situated beneath the said cards and concentric With the axis of the latter, a revoluble shaft concentric with the center of said runner, a revoluble shiftingarm extending radially from said shaft, an antifriction-roller on the end of said arm, a card-engaging catch formed integral on the end of said revoluble arm, primary and secondary card-retaining latches situated on diametrically opposite sides of the axis of rotation of said revoluble shiftingarm, a cam formed integral on the end of said arm whereby the primary latch is first disengaged and means whereby the card to be shifted is next engaged by said engaging catch to be turned into position to expose its reverse side and finally to be engaged by said secondary latch.
5. In an advertising device, the combination with a vertically-extending fixed shaft and a series of vertically-extending cards hinged thereon, and distance or separating bars fixed on said cards to retain them at fixed distances apart, of a semicircular supporting-runner situated beneath the said cards and concentric with the axis of the latter, a revoluble shaft concentric with the center of said runner, an arm pivoted on said shaft to swing in a plane at right angles with the plane of rotation of said arm, an antifriction-roller situated on the free end of said arm and adapted to run on said runner, a card-engaging catch formed integral on the end of said revoluble arm, primary and secondary card-retaininglatches situated on diametrically opposite sides of the axis of rotation of said revoluble shiftingarm, and a cam formed integral on the end of said arm, whereby the primary latch is first disengaged and the card to be shifted is next engaged by said engaging catch to be turned into position to expose its reverse side and finally to be engaged by said secondary latch.
6. In an advertising device, the combination with a vertically-extending fixed shaft and a series of vertically-extending cards hinged thereon, and distance or separating bars iixed on said cards to retain them at fixed distances apart,ofasemicircularsupporting-runnersituated beneath the said cards and concentric with the axis of the latter, a revoluble shaft concentric with the center of said runner, an arm pivoted on said shaft to swing in a plane at right angles with the plane of rotation of said arm, an arm-stop on said shaft and a stop on said arm whereby the downward swing of the free end of said arm is limited, an antifrictionroller on the end of said arm, primary and secondary card-retaining latches situated on diametrically opposite sides of the axis of rotation of said revoluble shifting-arm, a cardengaging catch formed integral on the end of said revoluble arm, and a cam formed integral on the end of said arm whereby the primary latch is first disengaged and the card to be shifted is next engaged by said engaging catch to be turned into position to expose its reverse side and finally to be engaged by said secondary latch.
7 In an advertising device, the combination with a vertically-extending fixed tubular shaft and a series of vertically-extending cards hinged thereon, and distance or separating bars fixed on said cards to retain them at fixed distances apart, of a semicircular supportingrunner situated beneath the said cards and concentric with the axis of the latter, a revoluble shaft concentric with the center of said runnor, an arm pivoted on said shaft to swing in a plane at right angles with the plane of rotation of said arm, an arm-stop on said shaft and a stop on said arm whereby the downward swing of the free end of said arm is limited, a spring connected to said shaft at one end and at the free end of said revoluble arm, an antifriction-roller on the end of said arm, a card-engaging catch formed integral on the end of said revoluble arm, primary and secondary card-retaining latches situated on diametrically opposite sides of the axis of rotation of said revolubleshifting-arm, and a cam v formed integral on the end of said arm, whereby the primary latch is first disengaged and the card to be shifted is next engaged by said engaging catch to be turned into position to expose its reverse side and finally to be engaged by said secondary latch.
8. In an advertising device, the combination with a vertically-extending fixed tubular shaft and a series of vertically-extending cards on said shaft and supported thereby, distance or separating bars fixed on said cards to retain them at fixed distances apart, of a semicircular supporting-runner situated beneath the said cards and concentric with the axis of the latter, a revoluble shaft concentric with the center of said runner, an arm situated heneath said cards and above said runner, said arm pivoted to said revoluble shaft to swing in a plane at right angles with its plane of rotation, stopping means on said revoluble shaft whereby the vertical swing of said arm is limited, a controlling-spring on said arm, an antifriction-roller pivoted to the free end of said arm and adapted to run on said runner, a card-engaging catch formed integral on the end of said revoluble arm, primary and secondary card-retaining latches situated on diametrically opposite sides of the axis of rotation of said revoluble shifting-arm, a cam formed integral on the said arm whereby the primary latch is first disengaged and the card to be shifted is next engaged by said engaging catch to be turned into position to expose its reverse side and finally to be engaged by said secondary latch. v
