Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. MoGALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vest Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Curling Machines: and I, do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as'will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention has reference to improvements in hat-curling machines; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a simple and novel mechanism which is to be used with a table orsupport upon which the hat-body is be placed for the purpose of curling the brim of the hat-body, the various parts of the hat-curling machine and the curling attachments being arranged in such a manner that the hat-body in bringing its i body and a curling cord OI strap used with brim for curling purposes in contact with the curling appliance or parts may be manipulated with greater facility and convenience, and, furthermore, resulting in a great saving of time.
A further object of this invention is to provide a curling appliance or device which will produce a positive and perfectly-made curl of the hat-brim, free from the twisting appearance and free from wrinkles or other blemishes, the mechanism, furthermore, preventing the glazing or roughening of the curl produced.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly mentioned will be understood from the following detailed description of the same.
\Yith the various objects of this invention in view the same consists in the novel hatcurling machine hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the I l l i l finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and form an essential part of this specilication.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation ofa hat-brimcurling machine embodying the principles of this invention, and Fig. is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the lower portion of the machine, the said section being represented as being taken on line 3 3 in said Fig. 1, with certain parts shown broken away. Fig. 4 is an enlarged top or plan view of the curling appliance, showing also a portion of the bed or table upon which the hatbod v is placed. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the curling appliance on an enlarged scale, said section being taken on line 5 5 in Fig. l andsaid view showing in plan a portion of said bed or table and a portion of the hat-body with its brim in the act of being curled. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 6 6 in Fig. 4 and a similar section of a portion of the hatthe hat-brim and the curling appliance dur ing the operations of curling the hat-brim and Fig. 7 is a transverse vertical section of the same parts, said section being taken on line 7 7 in said Fig. 4. Fig. 8 isan enlarged plan view of the curling appliance provided with a curling-cord or strap-guide. Fig. 9 is a front view of these parts. Fig. l is a vertical section of the lower portion ofsaid guide; and Fig. 11 it a transverse section of a portion of the hat-brim-supporting table, a part of the hat-brim, and a front elevation of the said curling cord or strap guide.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the complete hatcurling machine, the same comprising a suitable hollow standard or other suitable supthe construction of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and then port or frame, as 2, provided with a base 3 and a top &, upon which is suitably secured a plate 5. The said plate is provided with a suitable pivot-lug (5 or the like, having a supporting-pin 7, and extending from the opposite edge of the said plate 5 is an arm 8, having an upwardly-extending standard or bracket 9, upon which is secured and supported, by means of abolt 1O or in any other suitable manner, the curling appliance to be presently described.
Pivotally arranged in a suitable bearing 11, connected with the lower portion or with the base 3 of the standard or frame 2 and in a bearing 12 in the top 4, is a suitable vertical shaft 13. This shaft is provided with a suitable worm-wheel 14, which is in mesh with a worm 15, arranged in an open portion 16 in the lower part of said standard or frame, the said worm being arranged upon a portion of a main driving-shaft 17 between a pair of bearings 18, in which said shaft 17 is rotatively arranged. The said shaft is also rotatively arranged in a bearing 20 of a bracket 19, extending from the side of the standard or frame 2, and is provided with a loose pulley 21 and a fast pulley 22, over which a driving-belt may be passed for driving the said I Slidably arranged upon a key or spline 24,
extending from the side of the upper portion of the vertical shaft 13 above the plate 5 and rotating with the said shaft 13. is a suitable head or hub 25, provided with an annular rib or projection 26 and a table or bed 27, all of which is clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. To raise or lift the said hub or head and the supporting table or bed connected therewith while the shaft 13 is turning in its bearings, a lever or arm 28 is pivotally arranged upon the supporting-pin 7, previously mentioned, the said lever or arm 28 having a forked or yoke-shaped end portion 29, the ends 30 of which are in lifting engagement with the said annular rib or projection 26 of the head or hub 25. Suitably connected with the opposite end portion 31 of the said lever or arm 28 is a link or rod 32, the
lower end of which is suitably connected with a foot-treadle 33, substantially as illustrated, or with any other operating means suitable for actuating these parts. Thus it will be evident that when the foot-treadle 33 is forced in a downward direction the lever or arm 28 will be actuated in such a manner that the head or hub 25 and the table or bed 27 may be sufficiently raised to bring the brim of the hat-body placed upon said table or bed in close proximity to the brim-curling members of the curling appliance in the manner and for the purposes to be hereinafter more fully described. When the pressure is removed from the foot-treadle, the weight of the table or bed 27 and the head or hub 25 will cause all the parts to again assume their normal initial positions and all without interference with the rotary movements of the table or bed 27 or of the shaft 13, employed for actuating the said table'or bed.
The curling appliance, which, as has been previously stated, is carried by the standard or post-9 and is secured thereto in any suitable manner, is indicated by the reference character 34. This curling appliance is pref erably of the general construction indicated more particularly in Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 of the drawings. As will be seen from an inspection of these figures the said curling apappliance comprises a main body or member 35 of any desirable configuration and provided with a pair of bearing portions 36 and 37, formed with an open space 38 between them. Rotatively arranged in said bearings 36 and 37 is a shaft or spindle 39, which is provided with a pulley or grooved wheel 40, a suitable belt 41 being passed over this pulley or wheel and over the pulley or wheel 23 upon the main driving-shaft 17 for transmitting a rotary motion to said shaft or spindle 39, as will be clearly understood. Suitably secured upon the said shaft or spindle 39 and rotatively arranged in the open space 38 between the said bearings 36 and 37 is a combined curling and feeding wheel or disk 42, the said wheel or disk, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 5, being made with a rolling or curling surface 43, preferably of the concave curvature shown in said Fig. '5. Referring now more particularly to said Fig. 5 of the drawings, it will be seen that the bearing portion 37 is made with an angular edge or surface 44 and is provided with a screw-threaded socket 45, in which is secured the end portion 47 of a stud 46 Upon this stud 46 is rotatively arranged an ironing-out or brim-turning wheel or disk 48, said wheel being operatively retained upon said stud 46 by means of a disk or washer 49 and a nut 50, secured upon thescrew end 51 of the said stud 46, as shown. That the said ironing or brim-turning wheel or disk 48 may receive the proper rotary direction to take hold of the marginal edge portion 53 of the hat-brim 52 and roll or turn it upon the round curling cord or strap 54 in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings and that the said turnedup or rolled-over part of the hat-brim may be properly fed beneath the rolling or curling surface 43 of the wheel or disk 42 the said wheel or disk 48 is made upon its inner flat face with radially-extending gear-teeth 55, with which are in operative engagement the teeth of a gear 56, said gear-wheel 56 being suitably arranged and secured upon the spindle 39, from which it receives its rotation and in consequence actuates the said wheel or disk 48. In its under surface the said body 35 of the curling appliance is preferably made with a guide of any suitable construction-in this case a semicircular groove 57 or the like which forms a guide in which the curled-over portion of the hat-brim moves away from the curling-wheel 4:2, as will be clearly evident. In addition to the various parts of the curling attachment just described a curling cord or strap guide for properly guiding the said cord or strap 5& upon the hat-brim may be used with the curling attachment, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 8 to 11, inclusive. This guides consists, essentially, of a member or arm 58, suitably secured to the block or body 35 by means of screws 59 or other fastening devices,said member or arm 58 being provided with a forked or other suitable end portion 60, the open part between the members 61 and 62 of the fork preferably being a quadrant of a circle when viewed from the front. \Yithin said opening and suitably secured against the inner face of the fork member 61 by means of screws 63 or in any other suitable manner is a guide-block 6st, provided with a receiving hole or opening 65, through which the cord or strap 5* is fed, so as to pass in direct alinement beneath the curved rolling surface 453 of the curling wheel or disk 42, with the edge portion of the hat-brim turned over upon the said cord or strap. As will be seen from Figs. 9 and 11, the said guideblock when viewed from the front is also of a quadrant of a circle, or approximately so, but is smaller across its face than the width of the space between the said fork members 61 and 62, so that a suitable space 66 will be provided into which the marginal edge of the hat-brim can be turned and fed to give the same a preliminary turn-over above the curling cord or strap 5-.t, which is being fed through the opening in the guide-block 64: and before being fed beneath the surfaces of the said wheels 48 and *2, as will be clearly understood.
The operations and workings of the abovedescribed mechanisms are most simple and will be clearly understood from the foregoing description and from an inspection of the various figures of the drawings and need therefore not be more particularly dwelt upon at this time, and although the mechanisms and devices herein described and shown embody one preferred construction .I am aware, however, that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various devices and their parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the foregoing description of the invention and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings F of the same, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts. It will also be understood that in practice the curling-wheel a2 and the wheel It) are to be heated by conducting the flame from a gas-jet or other suitable heat-supplying means upon these parts; but the arrangement of this jet or other heating means being outside of the machine and not forming a part of the same such gas-jet or other heating device is not shown in the accompanying drawings. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a curling-machine, the combination,
with means for moving a hatbody about its turningwheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a curling-machine, the combination, with means for moving a hat-body about its central vertical axis, of a fixed support having a curling appliance, comprising a revolving curling-wheel having a rotary motion in alinement with the movement of the portion of the hat-brim which is to be curled, means for rotating said curling-wheel and a brimturning wheel revolving at an angle across the marginal edge of the hat-brinr and means for imparting a rotary motion to said hatbrim-turning wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a curling-machine, a vertically-movable rotary support upon which a hat-body is placed for moving said hat-body about its central vertical axis, means for imparting a rotary motion to said support, a fixed support having a curling appliance, comprising a revolving curling-wheel having a rotary motion in alinement with the movement of the portion of the hat-brim which is to be curled, means for rotating said curling-wheel and means for turning up the marginal edge of the hat-brim before passing beneath the revolving curling-wheel consisting of a rotary brim-turning wheel located in front of said curling-wheel, and means for rotating said brim-turning wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4:. In acurling-machine, a vertically-mow able rotary support upon which a hat-body is placed for moving said hat-body about its central vertical axis, means for imparting a rotary motion to said support, a lixed support having a curling appliance, comprising a revolving curling-wheel having a rotary motion in alinement with the movement of i the portion of the hat-brim which is to be curled, means for rotating said curling-wheel and a brim-turningavheel revolving at an angle across the marginal edge of the hat-brim and means for imparting a rotary motion tosaid hat-brim-turning wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. In a curlingmachine, the combination,
with atable upon which the hat-body is placed,
of acurling appliance comprisingamain body provided with a pair of bearings, a spindle in said bearings, means for producing a rotary motion of said spindle, and a curling-wheel on said spindle having a rotary motion in alinement with the movement of the portion of the hat-brim which is to be curled, means for rotating said curling-wheel, a rotary brim-turning wheel located in front of said curling-wheel, and means for rotating said brim -turning wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. In a curling-machine, the combination, with atable upon which the hat-bod y is placed, of a curling appliance comprising a main-body provided with a pair of bearings, a spindlein said bearings, means for producing a rotary motion of said spindle, and a curling-wheel 42 on said spindle, said wheel having a concaved curling-surface 43, means for rotating said curling-wheel, a rotary brim-turning wheel located in front of said curling-wheel, and means for rotating said brim-turning wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. In a curling-machine, the combination, with a table upon which the hat-body is placed, of acurling appliance comprising amain body provided with a pair of bearings, a spindlein said bearings, means for producing a rotary motion of said spindle, a curling-wheel 42 on said spindle, said wheel havingaconcaved curling-surface, and a brim-turning wheel revolving at an angle across the marginal edge of the hat-brim and means for imparting a rotary motion to said hat-brim-turning wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. In a hat-brim-curling machine, the combination, with a table upon which the hat-body is placed, of a curling appliance comprising a main body providedwith a pair of bearings, and having a screw-socket, a spindle in said bearings, means for producing a rotary motion of said spindle, a curling-wheel on said spindle having a rotary motion in alinement with the movement of the portion of thehatbrim which is to be curled, a stud secured in said screw-socket, a brim-turning wheel rotatively arranged upon said stud, gear-teeth on said brim-turning wheel, and a gear-wheel on said spindle having its teeth in mesh with the teeth of said brim-turning wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
9. In a hat-brim-curling machine, the combination, with atable upon which the hat-body is placed, of a curling appliance comprising a main body provided with a pair of bearings, and having a screw-socket, a spindle in said bearings, means for producingarotary motion of said spindle, a curling-wheel 42 on said spindle, said wheel having a concaved surface43, a stud secured in said screw-socket, a brimturning wheel 48 rotatively arranged upon said stud, gear-teeth 55 upon one of the flat sides of said wheel 48, and a gear-wheel 56 on said spindle having its teeth in mesh with the teeth of said wheel LS, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
10. In a curling-machine, the combination, with a hollow standard, of a vertical shaft in said standard, means for revolving said shaft, a table rotating with said shaft, a fixed support on said standard, and acurling appliance on said support, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
11. In a curling-machine, the combination, with a hollow standard, of a vertical shaft in said standard, means for revolving said shaft, a table rotating with said shaft, a fixed support on said standard, and a curling appliance on said support, comprising a main body provided with a pair of bearings, a spindle in said bearings, means for producing a rotary motion of said spindle, and a curling-wheel on said spindle having a rotary motion in alinement with the movement of the portion of the hat-brim which is to be curled, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
12. In a curling-machine, the combination, with a hollow standard, of a vertical shaft in said standard, means for revolving said shaft, a table rotating with said shaft, a fixed support on said standard, and a curling appliance on said support, comprising a main body provided with a pair of bearings, and having a screw-socket, a spindle in said bearings, means for producing a rotary motion of said spindle, a curling-wheel on said spindle having a rotary motion in alinement with the movement of the portion of the hat-brim which is to be curled, a stud arranged and secured in said screw-socket, a brim-turning wheel rotatively arranged upon said stud, gear-teeth on said brim-turning wheel, and a gear-wheel on said spindle having its teeth in mesh with the teeth of said brim-turning wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
13. In a curling-machine, the combination, with a hollow standard having a lower open portion, and bearings connected with said standard, of a vertical shaft in said standard, a worm-wheel on said shaft, having a portion extending into said lower open portion, a driving-shaft 17 and a worm on said shaft in mesh with said worm-wheel, a table rotating with said vertical shaft, a fixed support on said standard, and a curling appliance on said support, comprising a main body provided with a pair of bearings, a spindle in said bearings, means between said spindle and said drivingshaft for producing a rotary motion of said spindle, and a curling-wheel on said spindle having a rotary motion in alinement with the movement of the portion of the hat-brim which is to be curled, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a curling-machine, the combination, with a hollow standard having a lower open portion, and bearings connected with said standard, of a vertical shaft in said standard, a Worm-wheel on said shaft, having a portion extending into said lower open portion, a driving-shaft 17 and a worm on said shaft in mesh with said worm-wheel, a table rotating with said vertical shaft, a fixed support on said standard, and a curling appliance on said support, comprising a main body provided with a pair of bearings, a spindle in said bearings, means between said spindle and said drivingshaft for producing a rotary motion of said spindle, and a curling-wheel on said spindle having a rotary motion in alinement with the movement of the portion of the hat-brim which is to be curled, said main body of the curling appliance being provided with a screw-socket, a stud secured in said socket, a brim-turning wheel rotatively arranged upon said stud, gear-teeth on said brim-turning wheel, and a gearavheel on said spindle having its teeth in mesh with the teeth of said brim-turning wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
15. in a curling-machine, the combination, with a standard, of a vertical shaft, means for revolving said shaft, a head slidably arranged upon the upper portion of said shaft, a table on said head, a fixed support on said standard, a curling appliance on said support, and means whereby an upwardly-sliding movement of said head on said vertical shaft may be produced, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
16. In a curling-machine, the combination, with a standard, of a vertical shaft, means for revolving said shaft, a head slidably arranged upon the upper portion of said shaft, a table on said head, a fixed support on said standard, a curlingappliance on said support, and means whereby an upwardly-sliding movement of said head on said vertical shaft may be produced, consisting, essentially, of an annular rib or projection on said head, a fulcrumed lever on said standard having a forked end in engagement with said rib or projection, a treadle, and a connection between said treadle and said fulcrumcd lever, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a curlirig-machine,a rotary support upon which a hat-body is placed, means for imparting a rotary motion to said support, a fixed support bearing a curling appliance beneath which the hat-brim is moved for curling the same, and a cord or strap guide, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a curling-machine, a rotary support upon which a hat-body is placed, means for imparting a rotary motion to said support, a lixed support bearing a curling appliance beneath which the hat-brim is moved for curling the same, and a cord or strap guide, comprising an arm secured to said curling appliance, said arm having a forked end, and a guideblock secured in said forked end, said guidebloek having a cord-receiving hole, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
19. In a curling-machine. a rotary support upon which a hat-body is placed, means for imparting a rotary motion to said support, a fixed support bearing a curling appliance beneath which the hat-brim is moved for curling the same, and a cord or strap guide, comprising an arm secured to said curling appliance, a pair of fork members on said arm forming a quadrant-shaped opening between said fork members, and a qmulrant-shaped guide-block arranged upon the inner face of said fork members, said guide-l )loek having a cord-receiving hole and forming with the forked portion of said arm a curved space into which the edge of the hat-brim is fed and receives a preliminary turn, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
