GAS-RETORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,129, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed July 30, 1902. Serial No. 117.681.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF HnoKEnT, a citizenof the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, residing at Munich, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (-ias-Retorts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
, The present invention relates to a retort for use in the production of coal or illuminating gas and water-gas.
In the method of producing coal or illuminating gas hitherto employed, which usually consists of the dry distillation of coal in suitable retorts, the production of graphite, which is deposited on the walls of the retorts, and of tar and tarry substances, which are deposited in the pipes, is unavoidable. I have found that the wet distillation of coal avoids these disadvantages. The wet distillation of coal is carried out advantageously with the aid of steam introduced into the retort during the process of making the gas.
The object of the present invention is to provide a suitable retort for the introduction of the steam.
in order to render the present specification easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal, and Fig. 2 a transverse, section through one form of the retort. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar sections through a modified form of retort. Fig. 5 is a cross-section through a further modification of the retort, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal horizontal section of another modification and showing connections.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the retort a is advantageously made of fire-clay or other suitable l'ireproof material, and a steam-pipe is arranged along the bottom of the same and provided with a set of perforations arranged at suitable intervals along the same, as indicated at 0. Steam is fed to the pipe in any suitable manner, and in order to render the cleaning of the same easy the pipes are left open at each end, suitable means being provided to effect a closure of the same when in operation.
As illustrated in Figs. 3 and &, instead of a separate pipe a channel 7/ is formed in the bottom of the retort, having upper perforations 0, and the ends of the retort are left open at each end of the said channel, suitable means being provided for attaching the steampipe connections.
In Fig. 5 a modification of the device is shown, in which instead of one pipe a series of pipes are employed. It will be obvious that a series of channels might also be employed without departing from the scope of the present invention.
In Fig. 6 a retort is shown having a plurality of pipes formed integral with the bottom of the retort in connection with certain details and illustrating a method of connecting the pipes with a source of steam-supply and also a form of closure by means of which the open end of the retort and of the pipes are simultaneously closed. In this figure the outer end of each pipe I) is connected, by means of a union 1!, with a steam-feed header v, and the other end of each pipe 0 is closed at the same time with the open end of the retort a by a head f, removably secured in place in a well-known manner.
Steam may be introduced at one or both ends of the pipe, pipes, or channels, pipe? and channel being used in the specification and claims as synonymous and as embracing a passage whether formed integral with the body of the retort or indepcmlently thereof and whether lined or unlined with metal or other substance.
Instead of horizontal retorts vertical ones may be employed.

A retort for the production of coal-gas, provided with a pipe extending along the lower portion thereof and communicating at intervals with the retort interior, one end of said retort and pipe being open, a connection between the other end of said pipe and a source ofsteam-supply, and a common closure for the open end of the retort and pipe.
