ROBERT BINNIE, OF BOLIVAR, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRILL-CHUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,761, dated February '7, 1905.
Application led March 17,1904. Serial No. 198,654.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT BINNIE, a resident of Bolivar, in the county of Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill- Chucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
My invention relates to an improved drillchuck, the object of the invention being to provide a chuck of simple and inexpensive construction which can be easily and quickly operated and insure the perfect holding of the drill; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation illustrating my improve- Fig. 2 is a View in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a view in cross-section, and Fig. 4 shows the parts disconnected.
1 represents the chuck-body, enlarged and flattened at one end, as shown at 2, and made with a longi-tudinal bore of the desired length to receive the drill 3. The enlarged portion of body l is made witha longitudinally-elongated angular recess 4, having curved opposite faces alining with a circular opening in one side of the body to receive a headed bolt 5, and the opposite side of said body has a deep circular recess or seat 6 to rec'eive my improved clamping plate or ring 7, having a central opening to accommodate bolt 5, which latter is screw-threaded at its end to receive a clamping-nut 8, screwed against plate 7. This plate or ring 7 is provided on opposite sides of bolt 5 with inwardly-projecting lugs or keys 9, having gripping-faces 10 at their inner ends curved to partially surround drill 3 and made toothed or serrated to clutch the drill. The bolt 5 is iiattened on opposite sides to accommodate lugsor keys 9 and is also made with an opening 11, extending laterally therethrough to receive the drill 3.
The operation of my improvements is as follows: The drill 3 projects through the opening 11 in bolt l, and nut 8 is screwed inward,
moving plate or ring 7 inward and tightly clamping the drill between the lugs or keys 9 and the wall of opening ll, thus securing the drill and centering the same and not forcing the drill against the wall of the chuck-body and out of the center, as is usual with devices of this character.
My improved chuck is adapted for use on iron, steel, and rock drills, and a great many changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at'liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a chuck, the combination with a drillbody having alongitudinal bore, of a boltipassing transversely through saidbody and having a threaded shank at its forward end, said bolt having an opening for the passage of the drill,
the wall of said opening adjacent to the head of the bolt adapted to be disposed within the bore of the chuck, a plate through which said bolt passes, and a nut on the shank of the bolt and bearing against said plate to clamp the -drill between said plate and the wall of the opening in the bolt.
2. The combination with a drill-chuck body having a longitudinal bore for the reception of a drill, of a bolt threaded on one end and passing transversely through the body, said bolt having an opening' for the passage of the drill` the wall of said opening adjacent to the head of the bolt adapted to be disposed within the bore of the chuck, a plate through which the bolt passes, lugs on said plate to engage the drill above and below the bolt and a nut on the bolt, bearing against the plate to clamp the drill between the wall of the opening therein and the lugs on'said plate. y
3. rIhe combination with a chuck-body having a longitudinal bore and a lateral opening, of a plate mounted in said lateral opening and having lugs to engage the drill, a bolt passing transversely through the chuck body and IOO , and also having a lateral opening communicating with the bore of the body, of a bolt passed through the body and having a transverse Opening to receive the drill, the wall of said opening adjacent to the head of the bolt adapted to be disposed within the bore of the chuck,
a plate or ring on the bolt having keys orlugs projecting into the opening in the body on opposite sides of the bolt and having toothed or serrated faces to engage the drill, and a nut 2O screwed onto the bolt and adapted to force inward the plate or ring and tightly clamp the drill between the keys or lugs and the wall of the opening in the bolt.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT BINNIE.
