Then by releasing the buttons the spring D forces the rods outwardly sufciently to manipulate the holding devices and throw them to the locking or holding positions, whereby they are made to engage the hair of the wearer.
It is believed that this is a thoroughly practicable device and that when appliedv to a hat will prove far superior to the ordinary hatpins.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a modified form of the invention whereby the lever-like holding device may be held in the released position or in a position to permit the removal of the hat from the head. To this end I have provided each rod F 'with a tooth or lateral projection F3, adapted to engage an oppositely-disposed stop C3, formed on each tube C. The tooth and the stop are so arranged that when the rod F is pushed inwardly a distance (indicated by the distance between the dotted-line position and the full-line position of the button G in Fig. 6) the tooth will engage the stop, whereby the holding device J is locked at the released position. In order to allow the holding device to resume its normal position, it is only necessary to pull downwardly on the rod suiiiciently to allow the tooth F3 to pass the stop C3, when the spring D will return the rod to its normal position, whereby the holding device is made to engage the hair of the wearer of the hat. In order to permit the necessary downward movement of the rod C, the opening in the fabric of the hat through which the rod passes must be somewhat enlarged, as shown at A Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. In a hat-holder, the combination of a tubular device, va coil-spring located therein, rods having stops bearing against the spring, lever-like holding devices fulcrumed on the tubular device, the rods being provided with parts projecting beyond the line of their body portions and acting on the lever-like holding devices to normally hold them in the holding position, the rods being capable of reciprocal movement whereby the holding devices may be thrown to the released position.
2. The combination of two plates adapted to be connected to the opposite sides of a hatcrown, two tubular parts rigidly connected with said plates and having their extremities remote from the plates provided with right and left screw-threads, a connecting-sleeve interiorly threaded to engage the right and left threads of the two tubular parts, a coil-spring inclosed by the tubular parts, reciprocating rods provided with pistons engaging the extremities of the coil-spring, the said rods passing through the crown of the hat and theirA outer exposed extremities being provided with buttons, each rod having a bent portion which protrudes through a slot formed in the adjacent tubular part of the device, and holding devices pivoted on the respective tubular parts and having their outer extremities bifurcated to engage the bent parts of the rods for the purpose set forth.

In a hat-holder, the combination of a tubular device, a coil-spring located therein, rods having stops bearing against the spring, lever-like holding devices mounted on the tubular device, the rods being provided with parts projecting beyond the line of their body portions and acting on the lever-like holding devices to normally hold them in the holding position, the rods being capable oi' reciprocal movement whereby the holding devices may be thrown to the released position, and suitable means for locking the holding devices in the released position against the action of the spring. y
