Be it known that I, REUBEN J. Mvmzs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Joy, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grinding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grinding-machines, and pertains more particularly to that class used for grinding flatirous and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine of this character having two rotary iron-supporting tables and a movable member between said tables and carrying a rotary grinding- .lisk for each table and the grindingdisk of one table traveling toward the center of the table while the grinding-disk of the other table is traveling toward the edge.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for raising or lowering said tables and at the same time provide a simple, cheap, and effective machine.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view taken on the line a TI, Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, A and A represent the framework upon which are mounted the rotatable tables B and B and which is made in the form of housings. The said framework A and A is spaced a distance apart, and connecting said housings or framework adjacent their upper ends are the tracks C and 0, upon which are mounted the grindingwheels D and D, as hereinafter more fully described. Mounted in said framework and extending across the space therebetween is a rotatable shaft E, which is provided with a fixed and loose pulley F and F, by means of which said shaft is revolved through the medium of a belt G, and said belt being adapted to be shifted from one pulley to the other the machine may thus be stopped, while the motor-power by which it is driven may continue to run. The said shaft E within each casing is provided with a gear-wheel c, which is adapted to mesh with a worm-gear carried by a vertical shaft H. The said shaft is mounted within the casing and extends up through the top thereof. The said shaft above the gear 0 is screw-threzuled atw, and upon said screwthreaded portion w is mounted a wheel I. Loosely mounted upon said shaft II, but held against rotation, is a sleeve 1, which extends above the top of the housing and is provided with radially-extending arms 1', which carry at their outer ends a ring f. The said ring 1" is provided with upwardly-extemling arms F, which are adapted to support the table B. The table is provided with a series of elongated openings Z), through which are adapted to pass the handles of the iron, and thus they are supported with their ironi.ngsurfaces up. By turning the wheel .I it will be readily seen that the sleeve 1 is raised and lowered, according to the direction in which the wheel turned, and thus the table may be raised and lowered as desired.
Mounted on said tracks 0 and U is a head R, which has journalcd in its upper end a shaft K, which carries at each end a grindingdisk D and l), and said disks are of a distance apart so that when one disk is at the center one of the iron-supporting tables the other disk is adjacent the edge of the other iron-supporting table. The said shaft K is provided with a loose and fixed pulley Zr and X", which are driven by a belt M which isdriven by the same motive power as the belt G, and thus the grinding-disks may be stopped and started at will without stopping the motive power. The said head R is adapted to move back and forth upon the tracks U and C and is provided at one side with a downwardly-extending arm N, which has pivotally connected thereto a link N, which has its opposite end connected to an eccentric O. Said eccentric is rigidly secured to a shaft O, which extends transverse the machine, the said shaft 0 carrying a gear-wheel 0, which is adapted to mesh with a worm-gear P, carried by the longitudinal shaft P. The said shaft P carries a gear-wheel p, which meshes with a gear-wheel P, carried by the shaft E, and thus it is seen that the eccentric is rotated and the head carrying the grinding-disks is moved back and forth across the tables.
The gearing between the gear P and the gear 0, carried by the eccentric-shaft, is such that the eccentric is driven very slowly, and thus the tables carrying the irons are rapidly revolved as well as the grinding-disks, and at the same time the grinding-disk of one table is slowly traveling toward the center of its respective table, while the disk of the opposite table is slowly traveling toward the edge of its respective table, and vice versa.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A grinding-machine, comprising rotatable tables, a movable member between said tables, and a grinding-disk carried by each end of said movable member above said tables.
2' A grinding-machine, comprising rotatable tables, a movable member between said tables and rotating grinding-disks carried by said movable member and adapted to move across said tables.
3. The combination with two tables, of a grinding-disk above each table, and means for moving the grinding-disk of one table toward the center, and simultaneously moving the grinding-disk of the other table toward the edge.
4. The combination with two rotatable tables, of a rotatable grinding-disk above each table, and means for moving the grinding-disk of one table toward the center, and simultaneously moving the grinding-disk of the other table toward the edge.
5. The combination with two vertically-adjustable tables, of a rotatable grinding-disk above each table, and means for moving the grinding-disks in opposite directions in respect to the tables.
6. The combination with two rotatable tables, of a movable member, a shaft mounted in said member, means for driving said shaft, a grinding-disk carried by the ends of said shaft above the tables, and means for moving said member toward and from each table.
7 The combination with two rotatable tables, of tracks between said tables, a member movably mounted on said tracks; a horizontal rotatable shaft mounted on said member, grinding-disks carried by the ends of said shaft, means for rotating said shaft, and means for moving said member on the track between said tables.
8. The combination with two tables, of a horizontal shaft adjacent the same,'means for driving said shaft, means carried by the shaft for rotating said tables, a movable member between said tables, grinding-disks carried by said member above the table, and means operated by said horizontal shaft for moving said member between the tables.
9. The combination with two rotatable tables, of a track between said tables, ahead movable on said track, rotating grinding- 6 5 disks carried by said head above the tables,
means for rotating said tables and means operated by said table-rotating means for moving the head on said track.
10. The combination with two rotatable tables, means for vertically adjusting said tables, of a track between said tables, a head movable upon said track, grinding-disks carried by said head, a downwardly-extending arm carried by said head, a link connecting said arm and an eccentric means for rotating said tables and means operated by said means for rotating said eccentric.
11. The combination with two rotatable tables, of means for vertically adjusting the same, tracks between said tables, a head movable on said tracks, a horizontal shaft mounted in said head, a grinding-disk carried by the ends of said shaft above the tables, means for rotating said tables, and means operated by said means for moving said head back and forth between the tables.
12. The combination with two verticallyarranged rotatable shafts, tables carried by the upper ends of said shafts, means for vertically moving said tables on said shafts, a horizontal shaft geared to said vertical shafts,

track between said tables, a head horizontally movable on said track, a horizontal shaft mounted in said head, means for driving said shaft, grinding-disks carried by said shaft above each table, a downwardly-extending arm carried by said head, a link, an eccentric adjacent said arm, means carried by the horizontal table-driving shaft for rotating said eccentric and a link pivotally connected to said eccentric and the arm carried by the head.
13. A grinding-machine, comprising rotatable tables, a movable member between said tables, grinding-disks carried by said movable member, means for rotating said grindingdisk, and an automatic means for movingsaid member back and forth between said tables.
14:. A grinding-machine comprisingtables, means for rotating said tables, a movable member between said tables, a shaft carried by said member, grinding-disks carried by the shaft above the tables, means for rotating said shaft and means driven by the table-rotating means for moving the said member back and forth between said tables.
15. The combination with two verticallyarranged rotatable shafts, sleeves movable on said shaft but held against rotation, a nut on said shaft below the sleeve, tables carried by the upper ends of said sleeves, a horizontal shaft geared to said vertical shafts, means for rotating said horizontal shaft, a track between said tables, a head horizontally movable on said track, a horizontal shaft mounted in said head, means for driving said shaft, grindingdisks carried by the said shaft above the table, a downwardly-extending arm carried by said head, an eccentric adjacent said arm, a link connecting said arm and said eccentric, and
means carried by thehorizontal table-driving shaft for rotating said eccentric.
16. The combination with two verticallyarranged rotatable shafts, tables carried by said shafts, means for vertically adjusting said tables on the shafts, ahorizontal shaft driving said vertical shafts, means for rotating said horizontal shaft, a track between said tables, a head horizontally movable on said track, a horizontal shaft mounted in said head, means for driving said shaft, grinding-disks carried by the said shaft above the tables, agear carried by the horizontal table-driving shaft, a horizontal shaft parallel with the table-driving shaft, a gear carried thereby, and meshing with the first-named gear, a worm carried by said shaft, a worm-gear in mesh with said worm, an eccentric driven by said worm, an arm carried by said horizontally-movable head and a linl; connecting said eccentric and the said arm.

The combination with a rotatable shaft, a sleeve vertically movable thereon but held against rotation, a nut on said shaft below the sleeve, a table rigidly supported by the upper end of said sleeve, means for rotating said vertical shaft, a rotating grinding-disk above said table, and means for moving the grinding-disk to and from the center of the table.
18. The combination with a rotatable shaft, a sleeve vertically movable thereon but held against rotation, a nut on said shaft below the sleeve, a table rigidly supported by the upper end of said sleeve and having article-receiving openings therein, means for rotating said vertical shaft, a rotating grinding-disk above said table, and means for moving the grindingdisk to and from the center of the table.
