UNITED. STATES Patented January 24, 1905.
LEWVIS SOHLEGLE, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLAMPlNiG-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,818, dated January 24, 1905. Application filed eptember 26, 1904. Serial No. 226,012.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, LEWIS SCHLEGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clampingrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the .clearly set forth, and pointed outin the claims.
The prime object of my invention, among others, is to provide a reliably-eflieient form of clamping-wrench which will engage the top of a fruit-jar without injury thereto and place it in position or remove it, as desired.
A further object of my invention, among others, is to provide a pair of extensions upon my-clamping-wrench which will straighten the edge of the jar-'lidand leave it in a 'desir able condition for cooperation with the gasket usually introduced between the edge of the lid and the neck of the fruit-jar.'
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, which are made apart of this application, and in WlllClI- V i Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my clamping -wrench complete ready for use. Fig. 2'shows a side elevation of a fruit-jarlid with my clamping-wrench applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of a fruit-jar and its lid with my clamping-wrench applied in cooperation with'the lid for the purpose of removing the same. Fig. 4: is a sectional view of Fig. 2 on line 4 4 looking in the direction of the arrow.
For convenience of reference to the various details and cooperating accessories of my in vention numerals will beemployed, the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout the several views, and, referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates a fruitjar of the usual or any preferred construction, while 2 designates the lid or cap therefor, also of the usual construction and having the outwardly-directed flange 3 at its lower edge, and designed to cooperate with said lid to efiect its removal from the top of the jar or for the purpose of placing the same in position upon the jar I provide my improved clamp, consisting of themembers 4: and 5, crossing each other and pivotally secured by the bolt or rivet 6, the outer ends of said members terminating in the handles 7, while their innerends are each formed with an'aperture to receive the end 8 of the loop-likemember 9, which latter is of proper circumference to receive the top of the fruit-jar'lid, whereby when the inner ends 10 of the members 4: and are drawn toward each other the top of the lid willbe tightly clamped by the member 9, as will be obvious. The inner ends 10 of the members 4: and 5 are each provided with a downwardly-extending branch 11, each having a'right-angled extension 12, it being understood that one of themembers 11 is of less extent than the other, whereby one of the extensions or feet 12 will rest above the edge 3 of the lid, while the other will extend below the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, the oflice of said feet being [to smooth out the crimps or wrinkled portions, as designated by the numeral 13 in said edge 8, and thereby dispose the flange in a straight continuous condition and better fit it for cooperation with the gasket to be interposed between said edge 3 and a contiguous part of the neck of the fruit-jar, the gasket being designated by the numeral 14 in Fig. .3.
When my improved clamping-wrench is designed only for the purpose of placing the lid in position upon the fruit-jar or for rt moving the same therefrom, the wrench ma be disposed in that position illustrated in Fig. 3, or with the extensions 11 directed upward, and thus fully out of the way; but when it is desired to straighten the edge '3 of the lid or cap.my clamping-wrench is disposed :in that position illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or" with the extensions 11 disposed downwardly with one of the feet 12 above, while the other is disposed below the rim or flange 3, which will insure that any downwardlydisposed crimp or corrugation will be engaged by the lower foot, while the upwardly-projecting crimp or corrugation will be engaged by the upper foot, all of said corrugations being smoothed out, and the edge or lip 3 will be in a very desirable straight or continuous condition.
It often happens that when the lip 3 is bent upward, as, shown in Fig. 2, a leakage or imperfect seal at this point will result, whereas with the use of my improved clamping-Wench the upper foot 12 may be brought to bear upon said crimp and insure that it will be pressed downward in close engagement with the gasket, andthereby insure a perfect seal.
The various parts of my invention may be very cheaply and readily manufactured and each readily assembled in its respective operative position, and while I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts deemed necessary in carrying out my idea I wish to comprehend in this application all substantial cquisvalents and substitutes falling fairly within the scope thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described clamping-wrench for cooperation with lids or caps of fruitjars and the like comprising a pair of pivotally-engaged members t and 5 having suitable handles upon one end and extensions 10 upon the other; a loop carried by said extensions and adapted to normally iit loosely around the cap or lid of the fruit-jar, said members 10 also having the downwardlyextendiug branches 11, each provided with a foot 12 whereby said feet may be brought into engagement with the upper and lower edges of the cap or lid and insure that the same will be straightened and left in a desirable condition for cooperation with the gasket interposed between the lid and the neck of the fruit-jar, all combined substantially as specilied and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a clamping-wrench for cooperating with lids or caps of fruit-jars or the like, comprising a clamping device having downward lyextending branches thereon, a lateral projection for the lower end of each branch, one of which is adapted to engage the upper edge ol the cap and the other the lower edge whereby said edge will be straightened, all combined substantially as set forth.
3. In a clamping-wrench for fruit-jar lids, a clamping device having depending branches and means at the lower ends of said branches adapted to engage the upper and lower surface of the edge of the cap whereby said edge may be straightened when desired, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4i. In a clamping-wrench for fruit-jar lids, comprising a pair of pivotally-cngaged members, a loop carried by said members, and
- means on said membersadapted to engage the upper and lower surface of the edge of the lid and straighten the same, all combined substantially as set forth.
5. In a clamping-wrench for fruit-jar lids, comprising a pair of pivotally-engaged members, a loop carried by said members, and means also carried by said members adapted to straighten the flange upon said lid, all combined substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
