HOLDER FOR OVERSHOES, RUBBERS, OR THE .LIKE.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER E. Lo'r STROM, acitizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Skagit and I rubbers, or the like for preventing accidental displacement of the overshoe from the foot under the ordinary conditions of service.

It is well known that in the use of the ordinary form of rubber same is often pulled from the shoe when the wearer is passing over muddy or soft ground, and the above of course gives rise to disadvantages which are very apparent and which are obviated by my inventlon.

The extensions 3 are preferably integral with the plate 2, forming angularly-bent portions thereof. Springengaging members 4 are carried by adjustable members 7, the latter being mounted for vertical movement upon the extensions 3. The engaging members 4 constitute downwardly and inwardly bent portions of the adjustable members 7, and the lower ends of the members 4 are adapted to engage with the upper projecting portion of the heel, adjacent to the point of securance of by bending the vertical edge portions of the extensions 3, and an engaging arm 11 is provided upon each of the extensions 3, the said engaging arm being formed by two vertical slots 12, disposed between the guide-flanges 9. The upper end of the arm 11 is provided with a projection 13, adapted to engage in one of a plurality of horizontal slots 14 which are provided in the adjustable member 7 The arms 11 have'a spring cooperation as regards the adjustable members 7, and their cooperation is advantageous in that they can be raised or lowered so as to readily admit of engagement of their engaging members 4 with heels which have been worn so as to be uneven. Also in certain instances the engaging member of one of the adjustable members 7 may be lowered so as to be out of use. The engaging members 4 are adapted to engage the heel 5 of the inner shoe 6 and to thus firmly prevent removal or displacement of the overshoe until the same. are so operated as to be thrown out of engagement with the heel 5 aforesaid.

The plate 2 is cut away from the rear side thereof and extended upwardly from the plate, and approximately intermediate the extensions 3 is an engaging member in the form of a transverse flange 10, which flange is bent upwardly from the plate and provided with serrated portions designed to positively engage the under side of the heel of the inner shoe 6 to prevent any lateral or longitudinal shifting of this heel relative to the extensions and obviate any likelihood of accidental disengagement of the membersA: from the heel 5.

The engaging members 4, having a spring action, are adapted to automatically engage the heel 5 as the'overshoe is placed upon the inner shoe 6 preparatory to its use in the usual manner. ment with the heel 5 firmly hold the rubber upon the inner shoe in a manner which will be clearly apparent. In order to remove the overshoe 1, it is but necessary to press the upper portions of the extensions 3 outwardly to disengage the members 4 from the heel, and the said overshoe may be readily taken off.

My invention may be used in connection with any shape of heel or style of shoe at present in use, and should the heel of the shoe not project sufficiently to enable the engaging members 4 to engage the same the shoes may be readily provided with horizontal grooves or depressions, which latter may be easily made with a knife by any shoemaker, and the said depressions would accomplish the desired purpose.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In combination with an overshoe, a plate secured to the heel portion within the shoe, extensions projected upwardly from the extremities of the plate and having their vertical edge portions provided with guide-flanges, adjustable members mounted in the guideflanges of the extensions and provided with a plurality of horizontal slots, the upper portion of each of the extensions of the plate being slotted vertically to form an engaging arm, a projection extended from the engagingarm of each extension and adapted to be received by any one of said horizontal slots in the adjustable member adjacent, each adjustable member being provided with a downwardly and inwardly curved part forming an engaging member, and a flange extended upwardly from the plate between the extensions thereof and serrated for the purpose specified.
