2 IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR CO ULING AND PURfFYING BDNE-BLAGK- @ljt gththlllt rttetrtt in to flgtsc etttts$atent ant limiting giitt at flgt Sitllit.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN? i r Be it known that I, DANIEL H. TU RNERyOf the city, county, and State of NewYork, have invented a new and -useful Improvement in Apparatus for Cooling and Purifying Animal Charcoal, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in whichi n Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectionalelevation of an apparatus constructed according to uiy iniproveme t, and
Figure 2 a transverse section of the sanie 7 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both fig'ures.
g This, my improvement, has reference to that description of apparatus for cooling and purifying animal char coal, or, as it is otherwise termed, revivifying bone-black, in which the coal is operated upon in a comparatively close and compact manner, but without exposure of it in dense quantities, and the gases, dust, and other impurities effectually removed'by agitating or giving the coal a. series of suecessiveliftsas it-is passed along a revolv-'- ing vessel or hollow body, through which a current of cool air is made to pass.
In this connection my present improvement differs from the apparatus shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, (No. 68,915,) issued to me, September Ti, 1867, in substitutingfor a revolving reticulated horizontal cylinder, provided with spiral lifters for passage of the coal, a combination of horizontal close cylinder, so provided, and screen-extension thereto, together with a hot-air,gas, and dust conductor atthe back end of the cylinder, andto which maybe attached a Hanc'ockor other blower, as in the apparatus pptented to T. H, Quick, on May 15, 1866, and November 26, 1867; and said invention further consists in a combination, with such an arrangement, of a distributing-apron, within the conductorfl'or the purpose of distributing the hot coal in the cooling and purifying-cylinder also, the iuvention includes a sliding or. adjustable device to the close' cylinder and screen-extcnsiom'foi' the purpose of regulating the extent of screening-surface, to increase or diminish the delivery of coarser and valuable dust circumferentially, while the cold and clean coal is discharged a through the open front end of the cylinder or its screen-extension. i
Referring to the accompanying drawing,'A represents a cylinder, sethorizontally, or thereahouts, on a revolving shaft, B, to which it is secured, and through means of which it is driven by any suitable power. Said' cylinder A'isof an open character at its ends, but of a. close construction, circumferentiall y, excepting at or near its forward end, where it is made to connect with or to form a screen-extension, O, the forward end of which lies over a coal-delivery spout or chute, D, attached, say, to the frame E, which carries the apparatus.
. Fis'the hot-air, gas, and dust conductor-,arranged atthe opposite or back end of the cylinder A, and which may be connected by a suitable extension, G, with a Hancock, steam, or other blower. Within this conductor is arranged a distributing-apron, H, that serves to convey and distribute the rehurnt coal from a feed-spout, I, into' the cooling-cylinder A, which, in'revolving, passes the hot coal along it,'an d, by means ofinternal lifting l strips J, to said cylinder, and which are preferably of a spiral character, causes it to be subjected to a succession of lifts, the coal falling back'repeatdly as each strip approaches its uppermost position, and, whilst thus agitated and opened or distributed, said coal is exposed to a natural or forced draughtof cold-air, which enters at the open or front end of the cylinder A, orits screen-extension O, and is made ,to pass through the coal, and in an oppositedirection'to the advancing course of it, carrying ofi' all impurities,.-including fine dust and heated gases, r up through the conductor F, the cooled and clean coal escaping at the opposite end down the chute D. This is essentially different to my previously-patented arrangement of a. horizontal revolving screen, hereinbefore referred to, and has a superior action upon the coal to a vertical arrangement of cylinder. But, by combining the screen-extension G with'the close cylinder A, at it forward end, I am enabled tosift the coal,'prior to delivery from the machine, of all or'most of its coarser and valuable dust not passing off with the current, and which may be regulated, as regards proportion or amount thus sifted, by means of alslidingring or cover, K, adjustable along the cylinder A, and over :the screen 0, circumstances sometimes requirihgmore of such dust to be collected separately from the clean coal, and atoth'er times less. s
The arrangement of the distributing-apron H within the eoneiaoter, efi'eetually secures the proper distribu tion of the hot coal within the cooling-eylinder. i t What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is l 1. The combination of the circumferentially close revolvingcylinder A, provided with'interior lifters, and set horizontally, or tliereebouts, with the screen, or screen-extension C,:1t the forward end of siiid cylinder, and hot-air; gas, and. dust .concluctor F, for operation together substantiolly as specified. I
2: In combination with the circumferentially close'cylinder A, and screen forward extension C, the adjustable ring or cover K, essentially as shown and described.
3. The arrangement, within the conductor F, of the distributing-apron H, for operation in connection with the cvlinder A, providedrwith lifters and set horizontally, or therenbouts, as herein set forth.
