lVllLLSTONE-DRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,619, dated December 2'7, 1904.
Application filed June 2, 1904;. Serial No. 210,800.
To all (u/1,0721 it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESTER B. WVooLEvER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Austinburg, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Millstone-Dress, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to millstone-dresses, and has for its object certain new and improved dressing thereof whereby increased, improved, and more effective grinding may be made.
The invention consists of the special or peculiar dressing for millstones shown in the accompanying drawings, hereinafter fully described, and as specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the lower stone or grinding-disk, showing my improved dress applied to a portion thereof; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a series of furrows or leaders A in the millstone B, the same disposed obliquely in the disk and in such manner that they will lie tangential to the eye C thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. It will be noticed that said leaders extend from the eye O and end at the skirt D of the stone. At the eye they form, through running together, a slight annular depression E. The leaders A are constructed with an abrupt or vertical rear side F, forming the cutting edge, and a front incline side G. The face of the skirt portion of the stone and the lands H between the several leaders A are provided with a series of angular-shape grooves I, increasing in number as they approach the skirt. It will be noticed that said grooves I are extended down the incline side G of the leaders and to the bottom portion thereof for the purpore as will appear farther on.
\Vith my improved dress increased and improved grinding is effected through the numerous and special arrangement of leaders, whereby at the eye of the stone an annular depression is formed into which the grain enters and from whence it is drawn outwardly between the lower and upper stones, with rolling action imparted thereto by engagement of the grain with the grooves I, extending down the incline side G of the leaders. Reduction of the grain is continued throughout the whole length of the leaders by means of extending the grooves I down their front or incline side from end to end thereof, as shown in Fig. l.
WVith my improved dress the leaders and furrows or grooves are self-sharpening, and the edge F of the leaders shears the grain to be further operated upon through rolling action imparted by engagement with the grooved incline side of the leaders, the several furrowed or grooved lands, and the skirt. My improved dress is also adapted for use on burs constructed of iron and other suitable metal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A millstone-dress consisting of a series of leaders with lands therebetween, the leaders extending obliquely from the eye in the stone to its skirt-surface and disposed running together at the eye of the stone forming an annular depression around said eye, the leaders being formed by a groove having one side made incline, and furrows or grooves in the lands and the skirt surface extending down the incline side of the leaders and disposed theredown from the annular depression to the outer end of the leaders, substantially as described.
2. A millstone-dress consisting of a series of leaders extending obliquely from the eye in the stone, to its skirt, said leaders having an abrupt side forming a cutting edge and an incline side, and disposed running together at their inner ends forming a common annular depression around said eye, lands between the several leaders, and furrows or grooves in said lands and the skirt, increasing outwardly in number, the grooves in the lands being extended down the incline side of the leaders and disposed theredown from the annular de pression to their outer ends, substantially as described.
