Description

@uiten tang -getnt @frn IRA D. RICHARDS AND HENRY D. lSNYDER, OF GA'RBONDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
YLettere Patent No. 77,842, dated .May 12, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
YT ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that we, IRA D. RICARDS and HENRY D. SNYDER, both of the city of Carbondale, county ot' Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented'a new and improved FoncefPost; anddo hereby declare that the following is al full and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying draivings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
The nature of our invention consists in a cast-iron post, to set in the ground, about two feet deep, formed with a. broad, Het bottoni, and winged to prevent it from beingraised, or thowrirto either side bythe action o f the f rost, and to extend some sixteen `(16) inches or more above the ground. Thatportion 'of the postabove the groundhas a. dove-tail groove on one s-ide, into which Van iron tenou or tongue is made to jit, and. slides in .,'rorn the top, and rests upon a. shoulder at the bottom'of the dove-tail groove. The iron teuon ortongue is fastened to the wooden post, by means of large screws or bolts, into which wooden. posts rnortises are melde to receive the horizontal rails, upon which the fence is built, in :my usual manner.
To prevent water remaining inthe dove-teil groove after rains, we` put one or rnore holes through the shoulder, at the bottom of the dove-tail groove, in such manner as to allow `the water to drain through upon the ground; and to prevent the cast iron from rusting, we galvanize it when required.
To-enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invent-ion, we will proceed to describe its construe. tion and operation. l
We construct our fence-post, the bottom part of cast iron, and-the top of wood, with a. 4cast-iron dove-tail tongue or tenon fastened on it, `with screws or bolts, which tongue or teuon slides. into e. 4dove-tail groove that isl formed in the top ofthe cast-iron post, by which means the wood. is fastened to the cast-iron part of the post D. y
We construct the castiron part with a. tint hanged bottom, as represented in drawings Nos. 1 and 2, marked N, with wings extending up about two feet, marked M, to a shoulder at the bottom of the groove, through which shoulder one or more holes are made', as shown' by cross-section, through E F, plate No. 4, The formation of the dove-tail is shown by diagram No.' 3,`crosssection through A B. Letter C, in drawing No. 1, represents the wooden post as fastened to the cast-iron bottom, it benga side view. v:Dravvingrllo: 2 represents a front vieiv of the same. Letter D represents the cast-iron part of the post.
What we claim as Aour invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi The fence-post, with cast-iron bottom and wood top, as herein described1 and for the purposes set forth.
