SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,670, dated December 6, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, FRANoIs JOSEPH MAU- BORGNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Plate Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to holders for photographic plates and the like,and its novelty consists in the construction and adaptation of the parts, as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.

Plate-holders are usually made to hold plates of but one size. It has long been recognized that it would be convenient and desirable if plates of different sizes could be placed within the same holder. Attempts have been made to accomplish this .by arranging the edge-embracing panels of the frame so as to engage the edges of plates of different sizes; but such methods in reality only provide for plates of sizes corresponding to the spaces within the steps. By this invention, presently to be described, a plate-holder is provided which will securely retain a plate of any size smaller than the interior area of the frame.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the improved plate-holder with one of the slides partly removed from the frame and also cut away to show the concealed parts. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with both slides in position, looking from left to right in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse'section on the plane of the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side View, and Fig. 5 a similar plane view, of the double-threaded clamp-rod. Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of one of the clamps.

Mounted longitudinally along the medial line of the frame is a double-threaded rod 30, the threads at one end being cut right hand and the other left hand. This rod is provided with bearings in the

11 and 12 and terminates at one end in the nut 31 and at the other in the finger-piece 32, both of these being rigidly secured to the body of the rod and turning with it. A strap-bearing 33 is socured to the member 12 and encircles the linger-pieee 32, the extreme end of the rod passing through an aperture in the strap. The middle portion of the rod 30 is not threaded.

Mounted on the rod 30 are two clamps and 41, each provided with an aperture 42, internally threaded to engage with the corresponding threads on the rod and each provided with inwardly-extending flanges as and L4. The space between the rod 30 and each of these

If a plate, as 50, be placed above the rod 30 so that its edges can fall within the pockets 45 45, then rotating the linger-piece 32 will bring the clamps toward each other and securely hold the plate in place.

It will be noted that by the use of a right and left hand screw the plate may thus be held substantially in the middle of the frame, and by the use of clamps having the inwardlyturned flanges, forming a pocket for the reception of the plate, the'plate is rigidly held without further accessories and will not be displaced during the necessary handling of the holder after the plate is in it.
