JESSE W. CALI-IOON, OF VVESTPLAINS, MISSOURI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Let'ters Patent No. 775,699, dated November 22, 1904.
Application led May 25, 1904. Serial No. 209,719. (No model.)
To (LZZ whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, J EssE W. CALHooN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westplains, in the county of Howell, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Wi re-Cutter and Pliers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tools for manipulating and cutting wires; and it has for its object to provide a tool which will be particularly well adapted `for use in wire-fence work and in which the wires to be cut will be held securely against slipping from the cuttingjaws and in which, furthermore, there will be provided a cutter which may be used a great many times without requiring resharpening.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification, in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the notched member of the tool. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of the upper member.
Referring now to the drawings, the present tool comprises two main members, one of which includes a handle 5 and a jaw 6, while the other includes a handle 7 and a jaw 8, said members being recessed at their sides in the usual manner and crossed and connected by the pivet 9, so that by manipulating the handles 5 and 7 the jaws 6 and 8 may be moved toward and away from each other. Formed vertically through the jaw 6 is a slot 10, the jaw 6 for convenience of description being termed the lower jaw, and transversely of the upper face of this jaw'6 are formed grooves 11, 12, and 18, which intersect the slot 10 and which are illustrated as arc-shaped in crosssection and of different radii to snugly receive wires of different diameters that are to be cut, and thus hold them from movement longitudinally of the jaw. The upper jaw 8 has also a slot formed therethrough, as shown at 14, and in the slot 14 is rotatably mounted a cutting-disk 15 on a spindle 16, the periphery 0f the disk 15 being beveled to form the cutting edge 17.
A wire to be cut is disposed between the jaws in one of the grooves in the jaw 6 and the handles 5 and 7 are then brought together, so that the disk 15 is engaged with the wire and cuts it. The cutting operation serves to rotate the disk slightly, so that after each cut the disk is in a different position and a new por- .tion of the cutting edge is presented for engagement with the next wire to be cut. By this means there is presented a cutting edge of a length equal to the periphery of the eutting-disk, and it is seldom necessary to sharpen the disk.
When there is no cutting operation, the disk passes freely into and out of the slot 10 as the jaws are moved toward and away from each other, so that the extreme end portions of the inner faces of the jaws may be moved into and out of contact and these eXtreme end portions are serrated, as shown at 20 and 21, to insure a firm grip when wires are to be twisted or otherwise manipulated.
What is claimed is- A combined cutter and pliers comprising cooperating jaws and means for moving them t0- ward and away from each other, said jaws having registering slots formed therethrough and having gripping-faces at their free end portions, and a cutting-disk rotatably mounted in one of the slots and movable into and out 0f the other slot when the jaws are moved with their gripping-faces into vand out of contact.
In testimony whereof I aiiliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
