LOUIS A. DE MAYO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOOR-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,579, dated November 1, 1904.
Application filed January 14:, 1904. Serial No. 188,983. (No model.)
To @ZZ 107mm, it may concern:
Be it known that I. LOUIS A. DE MAYO, a citizen of the. United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Door-Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a fastening intended particularly for doors, but useful in other connections.
By means of my invention the door may be held securely locked or it may be held so that it can be partly but not wholly opened, and by proper adjustment of the parts by a person inside of the room to which the door leads the catch may be entirely disconnected.
The invention also involves a novel construction by which it may be applied either to right or left hand doors without in any way modifying its construction.
This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation showing the lock in the position which it assumes immediately before taking the fully-closed position; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2, showing the arm in two positions.
The apparatus comprises a keeper which is intended to be fastened to a door and which is formed of a base a and an outwardly-projecting lug b, having therein two openings and b2 and terminating in a vertically-disposed notched head Z13. The lug Z) projects diagonally from the plane of the door, preferably toward the door-frame, and the openings b and b2 are arranged at different distances from the base a. Ooacting with the keeper is the arm of the fastening or latch, which is formed of two parallel members c and c, spaced from each other, thereby to produce in the arm a longitudinal opening or slot. Said members c and c are connected at their-outer ends by a cross-piece 02, from which a downwardlydisposed hook c3 projects. At the opposite or inner ends of said members c and c/ notches c* are formed, these notches lying opposite each other to form an enlarged portion at the inner end of the said slot or opening in the arm. Formed on or fastened to the upper member c of the arm are a series of lugs c5. Preferably three of these lugs are provided. Said lugs are spaced equidistant from each other and lie in the said opening in the arm. The members c and c are connected at theirinner ends by a pin d, which extends between them and is arranged to turn loosely in a box or thimble c, which is placed between the members of the arm. This thimble carries a stud e', which is arranged to turn freely in a platef. The plate is adapted to be fastened by screws or otherwise to the frame of the door and has at one side of the thimblee astop-lug f which is preferably formed integral with the plate. It will be apparent that the arm is thus mounted to swing horizontally around the axis of the pin CZ and also to swing vertically around the axis of the stud e within the limit set by the stoplug f', which is in the path of the swinging thimble e and allows the arm'but a limited vertical movement. By providing the stop as. above described the arm is kept from falling into a vertical position, thus holding the arm always in convenient reach. 1f the arm with its two movements were to fall into vertical position, more time would be consumed in returning the arm to opposite positions than is required in a construction which provides, such as the present construction, for holding the arm always horizontal. When the arm is not in use, it may be simply swung -back away from the door, and it will then lie snugly against the wall out of the way of persons passing in and out of the door. It will be also apparent that the arm has this movement whether it extends rightward from the plate f or leftward and that the stop acts in the same manner irrespective of the position of the arm. lt is this arrangement which adapts this fastening to right or left hand doors. When the door is fully shut, the T- head 3 of the lug I) will then bein position to be received within the notches c'l of the arm IOO members, and said arm may then be swung horizontally entirely clear of the keeper. It should be noted, however, that this movement is not possible except when the door is closed. lVhen the door is to any extent open, the T-head L of the keeper is moved outward of the notches el, and since the said head is longer than the width of the opening in the slot in the arm it will then be impossible to disengage the arm from the keeper. I'Vhen the door is fully shut, the innermost stud 05 may be engaged in the opening 7)', and the door will then be securely locked. The door may be moved partly open, the lug then running through the slot in the arm, and either one of the two outer lugs c5 may be engaged in the opening b2, thus locking the door partly open, and, if desired, the arm may be first wholly disengaged from the keeper and then the hook c3 engaged with the walls of the opening Z22, whereupon the door will be held partly open, but may be released from either side thereof.
This invention may be used on ordinary residences; but it is especially useful on the doors of state-rooms in ships. where it allows the door to be locked securely or to be locked at any one of two or more partly-open positions.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be. re sorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A door-fastening, comprising a keeper having' a recessed headed stud, an arm having an opening receiving the stud and a projection adapted to fit in the opening thereof, and means for movably mounting the arm.
2. A door-fastening, comprising a keeper having' a recessed headed stud, an arm having an opening receiving the stud and a projection adapted to fit in the opening' thereof, means for movably mounting the arm, and an open hook on the arm.
3. A door-fastening, comprising a keeper, an arm, means for mounting the arm to swing on crossing axes, and means for limiting the swinging movement in one direction.
t. A door-fastening comprising a keeper having a stud with a recess intermediate its ends and a head at its outer end, a longitudinally-slotted arm, a part of the arm being formed with notches increasing the width of the slot, to permit the passage of the head through the arm, and a lug formed on the arm and projecting into the slot, to engage the recess of the stud.
5. A door-fastening comprising a keeper having a stud with a recess intermediate its ends and a head at its outer end, a longitudinally-slotted arm, a part of the arm being formed with notches increasing the width of the slot, to permit the passage of the head through the arm, a lug formed on the arm and projecting into the slot, to engage the recess of the stud, and an open hook at the outer end of the arm, the open hook also being adapted to engage the recess in the stud.
6. In a door-fastening, the combination of a plate having a stop thereon, a thimble or box pivotally mounted on the plate and adapted to engage the stop to limit the pivotal movement of the thimble or box, an arm pivoted to said thirnble or box, and a keeper coacting with the arm.
7. In a door-fastening, the combination of a keeper comprising a stud having a recess intermediate its ends and a head at its outer end, an arm eoacting with the keeper and adapted to be engaged by the head on the stud, to connect the keeper and arm, and a pin carried by the arm and adapted to engage the recess in the stud and also to connect the keeper and arm.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS A. DE MAYO.
