T O ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WILSON, of Galesburg, in the county of Knox, and State of I Illinois, have. invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Valves; and I do hereby declare Athat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the sameref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. l
This invention relates to a new and improved construction of the slide-valves of4 steam-engines, whereby double openings are given both at steam and exhaustfports.

Figure 2 is a like view, showing the position of the valve, with the steam-ports at 4one end et' the cylinder partly open- Figure 3 is a like view, showing the position of the valve with the exhaust-ports of one side open,

The valve-seat A is made in the ordinary way, and is furnished with the usual steam-ports, a and a3, and two ports opening into theA exhaust-chamber D, as shown. n
The valve B' is furnished with two exhaust-chambers, C, and with the steam-passage al, and with the two passages, a?, for the exhaust-steam, as shown in the drawing.
In the position of the valve shown in tig. 3, the steam is exhausting through the port-0,3- and the passage a2, and also through the right chamber C, into the exhaust-chamber D.
The valveB is supposed to be moving to the right, or towards the port a3, and from the port a. It is obvious, therefore,'that all the steam will have been exhausted from the right end ot' the cylinder before the port a is open to take steam. When the valve B has moved into the position as shown in the drawing, g. 2, the steam-passage al will be open to the steam at the right endet` thevalve, and open to the port a at the left- -end ofthe valve, the port a being also partially open directly to the steam in the steam-chest. By the reverse motion of the valve B, the' steam' is' exhausted through the left exhaust-passage a2 and the left exhaust-chamber C, while steam is admitted to the cylinder through the passage a1 and the portata. The valve'B thus serves. as a eut-oit` also, and the steam is taken and exhausted by, double openings.
The advantages of a valve so constructed are that'the steam is both more freely admitted to and exhausted from a steam-engine cylinder than by the'steam-valves now commonly in use.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A steam-sliding valve, provided withl two exhaust-ehambers, G, and the'two exhaust-steam passages ai, and the 'steam-passage al, whereby the steam is both admitted to and exhausted from a steam-cylinder by double openings, substantially as shown and described. v l 2. A steam-valve, provided with the steam-passage a, and the exhaust-steam passages a, and the chambers C, in combination with the steam and exhaust-ports of any valve-seat, A,substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
