N0 MODEL 1 7 9 INVENTOR' BYWM ATTORNEY Patented October 4, 1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE MORGrENTHAU, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
PLEASURE-BOAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,382, dated October 4, 1904.
Application filed May 26, 1903. Serial No. 158,807. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ESSE MORGENTHAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pleasure-Boats, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pleasure-boats, and has-for its object a provision of a new and novel form adapted to be propelled around a fixed support extending up through the body of water upon which said boat rests.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my improved boat and its application to a body of water, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of said pleasure-boat. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through said boat.
Further referring to said drawings, it will be seen that the body proper consists of a trough-shaped shell 1, having arranged therein, at equidistant points thereabout, the seats 2, said shell having arranged upon its edges, at opposite sides of said seats, the rowlocks 3 to receive oars 4, and also at equidistant points the masts 5, carrying sails 6. Attached to the inner edge of said shell is a spider 7, carrying a hub 8, by means of which 'the same is supported upon a post 9, extending up through the water.
This invention is designed for use upon the surface of a small body of water or lake, having a stationary platform 10 arranged therein to permit getting in and out of said boat.
In practice the occupant or occupants of the boat propel the same by means of oars, as heretofore practiced in the ordinary boat; but in this instance the boat rotates instead of traveling in a straight line, the sails assisting to some extent in propelling the boat.
It is to be understood that a greater or lesser number of seats, rowlocks, and sails may be employed and that the cross-sectional shape of the boat or shell may be altered in various ways without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Apleasure-boat, comprehending in its structure an annular open-topped shell or boat rotatably arranged upon a support surrounded by water by a spider attached to its inner periphery, said boat-shell having masts placed at equidistant points thereabout carrying sails, and horizontally disposed seats extending across from one side of the boat to the other at equidistant points thereabout and alternating with said sail-masts, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in .the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JESSE MORGENTHAU.
