SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,153, dated September 27, 1904.

Be it known that I, VVILLARD O. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oucamonga, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented a new and useful Space-Economizing House Construction, of which the following is a specification.

Generally speaking, an object of this invention is to provide a space-economizing and convenient combination of rooms and the fixed furnishings thereofl superior to those now in use.

More specifically, my invention pertains to an inclosure comprising apartments adapted to be used for bedroom and toilet purposes, together with the fixed furnishings used in connection with such apartments, an object being to provide space for afolding bed or other article of furniture by utilizing space that would otherwise be but little used or wholly wasted.

Referring to the drawings, FigureI is a plan view of apartments embodying my invention, the walls being shown in section on line I I of Fig. II. Fig. II is an. elevation of the toilet or bath room and its furnishings, the front wall thereof being removed. Fig. III is a vertical section of Figs. I and II, taken on lines III III of said views looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

ered for use the corners 72 and 73 at one end thereof fit closely into the corners of the recess. The corner 19 of the recess may be beveled or cut away, as shown at 19, directly above the space occupied by the bed-corner 72 when the bed is down. This will provide more space in the bath-room and will also do away with having' an objectionable sharp corner projecting thereinto above the top of the tub. The walls of the recess 6 project or protrude into the corner of the batlil-room compartment, so that the recess occupies the space alongside the contracted extension 3.

l1 designates an apartment suitable for a closet connected with the living-room by a passage 81 and separated from the bath-room extension by a partition 12. Said partition 12 is preferably constructed so as to leave an opening 13 thereabove, so that a skylight 14 or Window 33 will furnish light for both the bath-room and wardrobe, said window being in the side of the closet-compartment 11. The partitions l5 and 16 between the folding-bed recess and the bath-room may be similarly constructed, leaving' an opening 17 between the top of said partitions and the ceilings.

The bed-compartment 6 may be closed at top by a ceiling, (indicated at 34,)an opening 35 being provided in this ceiling and a ventilator 36 controlling this opening, said ventilator being operated by a cord 37 or other suitable means. By this construction the housewife is enabled to shut off the bed-compartment from the bath-room when desired. Said ceiling 34 may, however, be omitted without departing from my invention.

18 is an elongated bath-tub lyinglengthwise of the room extension 3 and preferably occupying substantially the entire ioor-space thereof. Said tub is mainly located within the extension, but preferably projects beyond the inwardly-projecting corner 19, formed by walls 15 and 16, so that the forward end of said tub may serve as a seat for a person using a washbasin 20, fixed in the corner formed by walls 10 and 15. A hinged mirror 21 may be mounted above said basin 20, and a locker 22 is desirably located behind the mirror for cosmetics, shaving utensils, Thus the basin, the mirror, and articles IOO kept in thc locker may all be used by a person sitting on the adjacent corner of the tub.

23 is a cold-water supply for the tub, and 24: the overiiow-pipe therefor.

25 is an instantaneous heater provided with a gas-inlet 26, a water-inlet 27, and a hot-water pipe or spout 28, leading therefrom.

29 is the gas-outlet or flue for the heater. Said heater may be of any desired construction and is intended to heat the water as it enters the tub. v

32 is a door at or near `the other forward corner of the room. Said door may swing inwardly, as shown, or may be a sliding or outwardly-swinging door. Then the door swings inwardly, standing-space is provided between the arc described by the swinging edge thereof and the corner 19 of walls l5 16.

It willbe seen that the folding' bed 7 or article of furniture used in place thereof occupies floor-space that would ordinarily be occupied by a room containing' such a variety of furnishings as the bath-room hereinbefore described; but by a novel, convenient, and compact arrangement of the fixtures of the bathroom I obtain space for the folding' bed.

It will be understood that the bath-tub must be of considerable length to give comfort in bathing and also that the provision of the water-closet and the basin requires for a part of the bath-room compartment a considerable width, but that the width is not necessary the full length of the room. As far as the use of the bath-tub is concerned the exposure of the end thereof, as above stated, in the body portion of the bath-compartment is sufiicient to provide for a person entering and leaving the bath, and the space alongside the tub may therefore advantageously be used as a part of an adjacent compartment, as herein provided.

By construcing the bath-room compartment in an L shape, as shown, and providing a bath-tub of approximately the same width as one limb of the L greatest economy of space in a bath-room is provided for, as the projecting' portion of the' bath-tub may be a corner thereof, as shown in Fig. I, thus affording unobstructed space at both end and side of the bath-tub for access and egress from the same.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In a space-economizing house construction, a room provided with a recess in its wall, a bath-compartment at the side of said room and provided with a body portion and with a contracted extension formed by the projection of the walls of said recess into the corner of the bath-compartment and a bath-tub arranged lengthwise in said recess and projecting beyond the recess into the body of the bathcompartment.

2. In a space-economizing house construction, a room, a bath-compartment at the side thereof provided with a body portion and an extension, one wall of which is in line with a wall of the body portion, a bath-tub fixed in the extension, said room being provided with a recess in the corner formed outside the bath-room by a wall of the extension and an adjacent wall of the room-body, and astationary article of furniture in said recess.

3. In a space-economizing house oonstruc tion, a room, a bathscompartment at the side thereof provided with a body portion and an extension, one wall of which is in line with a wall of the body portion, a bath-tub fixed in the extension, said room being provided with a recess in the corner formed outside the bath-room by a wall of the extension and an adjacent wall of the room-body, and a folding bed in said recess.

4. In a space-economizing house construction, a bath-compartment provided with a body portion and an extension, a bath-tub fixed in said extension and occupying substantially the entire Hoor-space thereof, there being a recess in the corner formed outside the bath-room by a wall of the extension and an adjacent wall of the room-body, a room into which said recess opens, and a folding bed in said recess, a corner of said bed fitting closely into the first-mentioned corner when the bed is down, said first-mentioned corner being cut away inside the bath-room and directly above the bed-corner when said bed is down.

5. In a spaceseconomizing house construction, a bath-compartment provided with a body portion and an extension, one wall of which is in line with a wall of the body of the compartment, a bath-tub fixed in said extension and occupying substantially the entire Hoor-space thereof, there being a recess in the corner formed outside the bath-room by a wall of the extension and an adjacent wall of the room-body, a room into which said recess opens, and a folding bed in said recess, a corner of said bed fitting closely into the first-mentioned corner when the bed is down, said first-mentioned corner being cut away inside the bath-room and directly above the bed-corner when said bed is down.

6. In a spaee-economizing house construction, a bath-compartment provided with a body portion and arear extension, one wall of which is in line with a wall of the body of the compartment, there being a folding-bed recess, the outer side of which is in line with the other wall of the body of the compartment, an apartment opposite the rear end of the bath-compartment extension, a light-opening for lighting the inclosure, there being an open space above the partition between the bath- IOO IIO

compartment extension and said apartment whereby said compartment and apartment may be lighted from a single light-opening, a bath-tub fixed in the extension, and a Watercloset bowl and a fixed basin in the body portion of the bath-compartment.

7. A space-economizing house construction provided with a bath-room having an elongated fixed tub extending lengthwise the room and having one end adjacent a corner thereof, a protuberance extending into the room substantially to the side of the tub, said protuberance being right-angled at the base, the corner thereof beveled upward from a point adjacent the top of the tub, a'folding bed within the protuberance and having one corner directly beneath the bevel when down, a wash'- basin -xed in the corner formed by the end of the protuberance and the adjacent wall of the room, a hinged mirror above said basin, a locker behind the mirror, a forward portion of the tub forming a seat opposite the basin and mirror, a water-closet bowl in the Corner of the room adjacent the front end of the tub, an inwardly-opening door hinged near the other forward corner of the room, there being standing-space between the wall of the bedcompartment and the arc described by swinging the door.

8. In a space-economizing house construction, a bath-compartment provided with a body portion and a rear extension, one wall of which is in line with a wall of the body of the compartment, a fixed tub in said extension, a room adjoining the body of the bath-compartment on the side opposite the extension, the adjoining wall of said room extending rearward beyond the end of the extension and being in line with the wall of the body,7 of the bathcompartment, and an apartment opposite the rear end of the extension, there being a walled passage leading from the room to said apartment, and a folding bed mounted in the space between the room and the bath-Compartment.

9. In an apartment construction, an inclosure, a plurality of compartments formed within said inclosure by a partition of less height than the walls of the inclosure, a ceiling over the top of one of the compartments provided with an opening and a ventilator for controlling said opening.
