MODE OF CONSTRUCTING SMELTlNG-FURNACES.

Be itknown that I, Joan E. MoGmi, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and improved mode of constructing smelting-furnaces by combining my new mode of using a windjacket, water-jackets, and through-pipes for that purpose and the use of petroleum for heating as an acceleratory; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to an improvement in smelting-furnaces, and more particularly to the novel construction of water-jackets surrounding the furnace, a wind-jacket for supplying air to the interior of the furnace, and a water-jacket for surrounding the slag-spout.
In the drawings accompanying this specification, wherein a preferable embodiment of my invention is shown and wherein like numerals of reference refer to similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved furnace, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, my improved furnace consists of the melting-hearth y', the water-jacket 0, surrounding the upper portion of said meltinghearth, the wind-jacket 7), the water-jacket surrounding the furnace zone, and the shaft 11. The shaft 2: is provided with the usual opening 0, through which the fuel is introduced, and with the exhaust-pipes p p. The pipcspp are each provided on their interior with outwardlyextending noxzless .v, through which a blast of air or steam is adapted to be directed in order to create a draft through the furnace. The shaft 11 and the upper water-jacket are supported and held in position by the columns r. In setting up the furnace a suitable opening Z is left between the top of the water-jacket (a, surrounding the melting-hearth j, and the bottom of the upper water-jacket y. A covering is applied to the space to form the windjackct 7). A suitable number of apertures are made in the covering of the wind-jacket 7) to allow air to be drawn therein when a jet of steam or air is forced through the nozzles s s in the pipes p. The wind-jacket is also supplied with a pipe 1/, which leads to blower or other device for forcing air into the windjacket.
ln order to secure a very high degree of combustion in the furnace Zone, I secure a. number of inwarllly-extemling burners f within the wind-chest l). The burncrsf are all connected to the pipe f, encircling the waterjaeket The pipe f" is connected in a suitable manner with a supply of petroleum or other hydrocarbon.
In order to protect the slag-spout z of the furnace, which is of the usual construction, I have formed av novel water-jacket (I therefor. The water-jacket (Z is of an inverted-U shape and is arranged to stand on the upper edge of the melting-hearth 1 astride the slag-spout. I do not desire to limit myself to the precise form and construction shown in the drawings, as it is obvious that many changes might be made thereto without dcpartingfrom the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A furnace comprising an open-ended shaft, a melting hearth secured below and separated from the lower end of said shaft, a water-jacket around the lower end of the shaft, a water-jacket around the upper end of the melting-hearth, an annular air-supply box extending around the adjoining ends of the waterjackets, and a plurality of burners secured in said air-supply box and projecting into the furnace.
2. A furnace comprising an open ended the furnace.

A furnace comprising an open ended shaft, a water-jacket secured to and forming a continuation of said shaft, a melting-hearth secured below and separated from the lower end of said shaft, a slag-spout, a water-jacket around the upper end of the meltinghearth, an annular air-supply box extending aroundthe adjacent ends of the water-jackets, and an inverted- U shaped water-jacket connecting the water jackets, said inverted U shaped water-jacket being arranged to stand astride and form a cooling means for the slag-spout of 4. A furnace comprising an open ended shaft, a water-jacket secured to and forming a continuation of said shaft, a melting-hearth secured below and separated from the lower end of said shaft, a slag-spout, a water-jacket around the upper end of the melting-hearth, an annular air-supply box extending around the adjacent ends of the water-jacket, an inverted U shaped water-jacket resting upon the upper edge of the melting-furnace, said inverted- U shaped water jacket being arranged to stand astride and form a cooling means for the slag-spout of the furnace, pipes connecting the legs of said inverted-U-shaped water-jacket to the water-jacket around the top edge of the melting-hearth and pipes connecting the upper part of said inverted-U- shaped water-jacket with the Water-jacket surrounding the lower end of the shaft.
