IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.

Be it known that I, GEORGE W..WINTEP.RINGER, of Frederio-kt'own, county of Knox, and State of Ohio,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following is .a full, clear,.a'nd exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a .part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation, Figure 2 a vertical cross-section in the line xfa, tig. 1, and

The object of my invention is to provide-an apparatus of cheap, simple, and durable construction,.which may bc applied to any carriage or large farm-gate, without any material change its general build, to enable travellers to open and pass through from either side of it, without being obliged to di'smount from the horse or carriage to open or`close the gate. v

By constructing the centre post of the gate farther forward, it might be'made of suitable length, and thus` the centre shaft, Cfwhich now is additional, could be dispensed with, the'box'Cresting upon the c'entre post of thegate. The slotted shafts GD will allow o f my invention being applied tofarm-gates already in use. The other plan of setting the box C upon the contre post of the gate could be carried out in making new gates.
Upon a round iron pin, driven into the upper, end of this shaftor centrepost C, is. set the box 0*, of c n= venient length, the-pin #extending through tothe top of the box, over which is placed the coverf. The pin h should have a flattened oblonghcad, in order that thesprings m, which are' set in a recess longitudinally with the box and h eld. firmly in place by the pi'ns m-, may keep the -boxvin its proper position, and the handles vGralways at right angles with the gate A. It will 'be apparent, Awithout the use of thespingspm, or their equivalents, that the handles G would remain -in the position at which the hand sh'ould be disengaged of the person driving through the gate, and therefore not available to the next one who should wish to open it; but by the action-of the springs m, no matter in what direction the handles G/may point vat the' timethe traveller disengages his hand, upon the closing of thc gate they will resume a position atright angles Withfit. The forked 'lever of ythe handles G G can be constructed passing through the box, or over it, as repre= sented in the drawings, C2. The-'fcrked-shaped lever is preferred, on account f its strength,l though it may consist only of a straight polc,'of'sufiloihent length andsize to operate t-he'fastening of the gate.
On each lower end of the box Cl are projections F, figs. 1 and 3, of triangular shape, which are bcvelled at such an angle that when they come in vcontact with the bevelled end of, the slotted rand movable shaft D, which is 'built upright and parallel to the shaft C, between it and the front post of the gate A, the action of the bevelled projections F upon' the inverted triangular surface E of the shaft D will be to raise this shaft,

The slotted shaft D-is secured in its position, near to its vupper end, bythe har b, connecting itto the centre shaft or post C, and at its bottom by the' latch (l of the gate.
On each side of the shaft D are driven pins cZ'cZ, into the bars c c of the gate, which allow it only a vertical motion. The latch-board I should he constructed with bevelled angles a2, of sufficient length for the latch to become easily adjusted with reference to the force with which the gate closes itself.' This is accomplished by the iveight H, attached to the cord connecting it tc the plank K, which extends from the centre shaft or post C, beyond the hind end of the gate'A, and as far as is necessary to cover the projection B.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
The person in the carriage, driving through, drives his horses under the forked lever G', and,- rising from his seat, takes hold of the handle, and brings in contact the bevelled surfaces E and F of' the box C, and slotted shaft D, fig. 1, by which means thelntch a is disengaged, being raised from its socket al with the vertical movement of the shaft D. Pushing open the gate, he holds on to the lever G! until thehind wheels of the carriage are so -'ar advanced that the gate, in closing, 'cannot'conie in lContact with them when he lets go the lever.. The gate is then closed by the action of the Weight I-I, and the lever Gmade to'resnme :i position at right angles with the gate by the action of the springs m upon the square surfnoeof the iron pin 7i, upon which the box Cl revolves, thus allowing the lever G to be turned round vond for cnil.
What I claim as new, 4and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is y 1. The combination and arrangement of the bcvelled angles E and F of the box C,'anr l slotted shaft D, operated by the forked or straightlever Gll substantially as and forxthe purposes herein described and set forth.
v 2. In comhination'with the above, I claim the springs m, or Atheir equivalent, the flattened androblong heull of the bolt k, theoperatingdevcr G', all arrenged and operated substantially as and for the purposes herein described and set forth.
3. In combination with the above, I claim the weight H, arranged and voperating as described, for the purpose of closing the gate, as specied.-
