Imm Patent No. 76,954, ma apra 21, 1868,
IMPROVED HAY-HOISTING DRUM AND GRAIN-FORK,
@its .tlgttult nitraat tu it tiene tettrttttttat mit mating gaat rt the una.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY STRICKLE'R, of the borough of Carlisle, county of Cumberland, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Hay-Hoisting Drum and GrainFork andI do hereby declare that the'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a full and exact perspective view of the whole invention, and forms a part of this specification.
In the drawing, a a' a a represents the front frame oi' a. barn, and b b 6 the side frame of the same. In the frame a a a a" I erect vertically the conical shaft c c', in the upper end of which is a stationary metallic spindle, which is to be inserted in the upper part of the frame, and in the lower end of the shaft is a box, x, in-which is a movable pin, prevented fromsliding out by a shoulder or head on the upper end oi' it. The full length of this pin can be pushed into the shaft, when, the 'end of the shaft being placed over the hole in the lower` frame, the pin drops down andfastens the shaft, On the shaftce, Iplace a movable l drum., g, aroung which winds the rope ordinarily used in hoisting hay. Between this drum g and the shaft c c',
in a groove or gutter cut in the said shaft, is inserted the ratchetff, which, when drawn up, prevents the drum from revolving. This ratchet is operated from below by the lever e, and from above by the'combination of the arm it, the rope w', and the pulley/w. I l l I further place upon the upper outer edge of the drum g, the bevelled cogwheel m, which gears with the bevelled cog-wheel n, which can be shifted on its shaft o, whereby it is'connected with the spur-wheel p, which gears with the spur-wheel q at the side of the barn-floor. On 'the rim of the spur-cog wheel q is fastened by a bolt and screw one end of the arm 7', the other end of which is fastened in a similar way to the one end ofthe arm s, the other end of which is fastenedlby a boltaud burr to the metal extension t, which is fastened to a post at or near the middle'of the side of the barnniioor. At any point in the upper side of the arm s, betweenits fastenings with the other arm 1- and the extension t, is insertedat right angles the fork u, the handle of which is of a length in proportion te the size of the barn. On the upper face of the side frame b b' b bf I erect the inclined plane c.
In unloading hay, the bevelled'cog-wheel n is unshifte'd by moving it on its shaft o toward p. The horse is attached to the arm d, and walks continuously around. The rope ordinarily used s attached to the ordinary hook or fork, and winds around the drumg as'the forkful of hay is going up, and when it is-up and'dropped, the drum is unshifted, either by the person working the hook or fork on the wagon, by the rope zc and the pulley w, and arni 7L, hitherto mentioned, or from the door by the lever e.
In unloading grain, the bevelled cog-wheel n is shifted into gear with the bevelled cog-'wheel m, and the motive-power applied to the arm`dags in unloading hay. The load of grain is then drawn near the side ofthe oor, and a person from the wagon pitches thc sheaves on the fork u, which carries them to therinclined plane c, whence they slide into the mow.
I secured by Letters Patent, bearing date the 11th day oi` Februar the lower part of the-shifting-ratchetf, the lever e, land the arm d.
What I claim now, and desire to secure byLettcrs Patent, is-
1. The extension f of the lower ratchet f', operating with the arm it and the pulley w, and the rope w', for the purpose of enabling the person working the bool; or fork on the loaded wagon therefrom to unshift the drum. l
2. The bevelled cog-wheel m, fastened on the upper-outer face ot' the drum g, the bevelled cog-wheel n, the arm o, the spur-cog wheel p, thespur-cog wheel g,the arm r, the arm s, the fork u, and the inclined plane v, all combined and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth. l
