Description

No. 769,443. PATENTED SEPT. 6, 1904. S. LACK.
COMPOSING STICK TILTBR.
APPLIUATION FILED APR. 4, 1904.
UNITED STATES Patented September 6, 1904.
SAMUEL LACK, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
COMPOSlNG-STICK TILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,443, dated September 6, 1904.
Application filed April 4,1904. Serial No. 201,423. (No model.)
To (11/ ii /1,0111 it new cone/arm.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL LACK, acitizen Q of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvei ments in Composing-Stick Tilters, of which i the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in type-setters tools, and particularly in means for supporting a composing-stick in inclined position.
It consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, having reference to the ac- I companying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view looking down on composing-stick with a fixed tilter attached. Fig. 2 shows a complete stick with the springclip tilter. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the spring-clip detached.
In setting type by hand it is customary to use a composing-stick consisting of a tray, as A, with a raised side and end and fitted with a knee, as 2, adjustable to any length of line required. If it is desired or necessary to lay the stick down at any time, it must be supported in some way along the side opposite to the type-supporting edge 3 to prevent the type pieing, as it would do if the stick were laid flat on a table or stone. It is customary to seize upon any article or tool that may be handy to put under the open side of the stick to tilt it to prevent disaster on such an occasion. Often, however, a suitable article does not present itself readily, or the one seized upon may be needed for something else.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple device to be carried by the stick capable of being folded out of the way when not in use, but being instantly at hand and easily applicable when needed.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a tilter carried peri manently by the stick. This tilter consists This brace is arranged to fold within the limits of the end of the stick when not in use, so as to present no projecting ends or edges or to allow the stick to be laid flat, if wanted. \Vhen opened, the brace will support the stick in proper inclined position, suitable stop means being provided to limit the oscillation of the brace. Preferably the brace is formed with a lateral integral projection 6, turned at right angles to the plane of the brace and adapted to catch beneath the stick to hold it tilted or to lie flat against the stick when the brace is out of commission.
In Fig. Qthe tilter is shown as detachable. In this case a spring-clip 7 is used, which may be sprung over the end of the stick and held securely. The brace a is carried by the clip and is adapted to be swung downward and supported by the stop 6 to tilt the stick or to be turned into horizontal position and out of the way when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a composing-stick of a foldable brace carried upon the outer end portion thereof.
The combination with a composing-stick of a foldable brace carried upon the outer end portion thereof, and stop means to limit the movement of said brace.
3. The combination with a composing-stick of a brace carried upon the outer end portion thereof and arranged to be folded within the limits of the end of the stick and to be projected beyond said limits to support the stick in tilted position.
4.. The combination with a composing-stick of a brace carried upon the outer end portion thereof and arranged to be folded within the limits of the end of the stick and to be projected beyond said limits to support the stick in tilted position, and means limiting the movements of said brace.
5. A composing-stick tilter consisting of a detachable clip and a brace carried thereby In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
SAMUEL LACK.
of the stick, and stop means to limit the oscillation of said brace about its pivot.
