NUT-LOCKlNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,400, dated September 6, 1904.
Application led June 29, 1904.
ful Improvements in Nut-Locking Devices; l
and .l do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description ofl the invention, i
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofl this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in nut-locking' plates; and it has :for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive, and at the same time durable and efficient device adapted especially for use in locking in place nuts upon bolts that are employed in securing the ends of adiacent railway-rails, the construction of' the device being' such as to permit of its being' readily attached or detached when desired, yet when in use serving to effectually lock the nuts against possible turning.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel arrangement, combination, and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafterdescribed, shown in the accompanying drawings. and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, which, with the letters ofl reference marked thereon, form a part of' this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the connectingends of two railway-rails with my lockingplate shown in connection therewith. Fig'. 2 is a central longitudinal horizontal section of the same. Fig'. 3 is a perspective viewiof' the base-plate used in connection with the locking-plate. Fig'. sl. is a like View of the locking-plate. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section taken upon line 5 5 of Fig. 1, and Fig'. 6 is a like view taken upon line 6 6 of Fig'. l.
Reference now being' had to the details of the drawings by letter,.A A designate the Serial No. 214,656. (No model.)
meeting ends of two connecting railway-rails which are provided with the usual fish-plates B B, which are commonly used in connecting' railway-rail joints.
C is what l term a base-plate, the same being constructed of heavy sheet metal and having struck up from its lower edg'e lips or flanges l), which are folded back upon the 'face of the plate, as indicated in Figs. and 6 of the drawings. These flange portions l) are so positioned with reference to the boltopenings E, which are provided in the face ofthe plate, that the longitudinal center of the flange l) is in each instance located midway between two adjacent bolt-openings E, as shown in Fig'. 3 of the drawings.
F F are curved flanges or lips which are struck up from the upper edge of the baseplate C and are slightly curved outwardly over the outer face of the` upper edge of the plate, as shown, these curved flanges F being positioned above the extreme outer ends of the flange l) at the lower edge of the plate.
G is a locking plate or slide. This plate is made, preferably, of heavy sheet metal of a length cori'esponding with the distance between the outer edges of two adjacent nuts when the same are in place upon the bolts passed through the bolt-openings Fain the plate O. This locking plate or slide G has its opposite ends bentoutwardly at rightangles to the body portion` thus forming the flanges H for a purpose which will hereinafter appear, and the upper edge of' said plate (i is provided with a lip J, which is bent downwardly over the rear or back surface of the plate, as shown.
In operation the manner of employing' my device in the locking of nuts against turning upon their bolts is as follows: The base-plate (lis placed directly against the fish-plate B, and the bolts which are employed in securing the fish-plates to the rail are passed through the fish-plates, the web of the rail, and the openings E in the base-plate. The nuts K are then screwed up tightly, after which the downwardly-inclined lip J is hooked over the upper edge of the base-plate C and the plate is forced downwardly, its lower edge passing' behind the upwardly-extended lug or lip l) at the lower edge ot' said plate and its upper edge IOO being sprung under the lips or lugs F1 at the upper edge of the base-plate, which lugs serve to prevent the possibility of the locking-plate being accidentally moved upward or displaced and preventing such movement until the upper edge of the locking-plate is swung outward, so as to disengage it from .said lugs. As the length of the locking-plate corresponds with the distance between the two adjacent bolts at its ends, it will be noted that when the plate is thus slid downward into position upon the face of the base-plate the upwardlyextending ianges H upon the ends of said locking-plate will have bearings against the vertical edges of the nutsand will thus serve to securely hold the nuts against the possibility of their being unscrewed or loosened until the locking-plate is removed.
It will at once be seen that by the use oi' my form of locking device it will be possible to quickly release the nuts and permit them to be removed, it being simply necessary to spring the upper edge of the looking-plate suiiiciently to disengage it from the retaininglugs F, when said plate can be slid upward and removed, and it will also be seen that when it is designed to again lool; the nuts in place it can be done by simply replacing the locking-plate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. In combination with the baseplate provided at its edges with lugs as described, of a locking-plate having one of its edges provided with an extension or lip adapted to engage the edge of the baseplate and the ends of said locking-plate adapted to engage the edges of nuts upon bolts passed through the base-plate, substantially as described and Ifor the purpose specied.
2. In a nut-locking device of the. character described, a base-plate provided with boltopenings and having at its opposite edges, intermediate of the bolt-openings, lugs or eX- tensions to engage a locking-plate, in combination with a lockingplate adapted to be retained in Contact with the base-plate by the lugs thereon, said locking-plate being provided upon its upper rear edge with a lip adapted to engage the upper edge of the baseplate intermediate of the lugs thereon, and the ends of said locking-plate being adapted to engage the edges of the nuts upon bolts passed through openings in said base-plate, substantially as described and for the purpose speciiied.
In testimony whereoil I hereunto affix my 'signature in presence of two witnesses.
