COMBINATION-Tool..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,196, dated September 6, 1904. Application led July 24, 1902. Serial lla-116,790. (No model.)
T0 all whom it nfl/Ly concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SPALDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Provigage, retain its use as a try-square, and possess other convenient uses, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure l is a side view of the tool, showing the same adapted for a depth and a surface` ease- Fig. 3 is a top view, partly in section, of the i f. surface-gage attachment.
Fig. 2 is a frontA view of the same.
sectional view of the same. Fig. l5 is a horizontal -sectional view of the head of the trysquare. Y Fig. 6 is a plan view of the detachable base, and Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional View on the line 7 7 of Fig. l6 of Ithe same. Fig. 8 is a side view of the center-gage, show'- ing the sameattached to the blade of the trysquare; and Fig. 9 isa sectional v`view on the Fig. l0 is an enlarged side the try-square.
Similarrnarks of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, A indicates the head of the try-square, which is provided with three bearing-faces-the base-face a, the front face a', and the miter-face a2. The head A has the i opening as, in which the'clamp nut is operated to bear on the tubular boss a5, in which the screwa, provided with an extension terminating in the bead a7, slides. Thehead A has also the semicircular opening as. The artly-cut-away level-tube a is placed so that the bulb of the mercurial bevel may be seen.
A tube for the reception of the scratch-pin al is also provided.
Fig. I is a vertical'A The front face a of the head A is slotted to receive the blade B, which is graduated, preferably, on both sides and has lthe groove bextending on one side, preferably on the center line, from end to end of the blade. The blade B fits the slot in the front aofthe head A with a sliding fit. The bead a7 fits the groove with a close sliding fit. The inner edge of the blade B bears against the bottom of the groove, being held against the same by the spiral spring in the sleeve of the n'ut a4, so that the blade B may be drawn through the slot and may be secured to the head by turning the nut of on the screw a6 to clamp the blade, as is shown in Fig. 5. When the blade v B is drawn out to project beyond the face a of the head A, as shown in Fig. 1, the blade and the face a form a true square, while the blade and the face a2 form a. true miter and may form any desired angle. With the use of the level theedges of the blade B maybe used to indicate true, vertical, or plumb lines. l
To adapt the try-square to use as an accurate depth-gage, I provide the base C of considerably greater width than the face a ofthe head A to insure a true bearing. f I form jin the base C the groove c, into which the face a accurately fits, and preferably deepen the center of the groove c, asshown-in Figs. 6
and 7, to give to the face a a sliding bearing only. I secure v.the head A in the base C by means of the clamp-plate c', connected by the dowel c2 with the base and raised offfrom the base by the spiral spring c3. The thumbscrew c4 in screw -thread engagement with the base bears on the Vclamp-plate c', and by it the end of the plate c' is forced against the edge of the face a to firmly secure the head Vof the try-square to the base. When the blade B is adjusted to project through the slot c5 the desired length below Ithe base C, the depth of a groove or depression may be accurately measured.
When the combination-tool is to be used as a surface-gage, thel head A is preferably secured in the base'C as above described; but the blade B is adjusted so that one end of the blade is on a line with the lower surface of thebase, and the surface-gage attachment D is adjusted on and secured to the blade B. The surface-gage attachment D consists of the arm (Z, having the slot (Z' with the raised bead (Z2 on one side, the said bead engaging with the groove b of the blade B. The bar (Z3, controlled by the thumb-screw (Z4, serves to clamp the blade B in the adjusted position and securely support the surface-gage. The post (Z5 extends transversely through the arm (Z, the head of the post bearing against one side of the arm. The thumb-screw (Z4 extends transversely through the post (Z5. On the projecting portion of the post (Z5 are supported the base-disk CZ, the spring-disk (Z7, and the milled disk (Z8. The milled disk (Zs is provided with a sleeve on which the spring-disk Z7 is rotatably supported. The pointer (Zg is supported in a groove in the spring-disk (Z7. The end of the post @Z5 is screw-threaded and is in screw thread engagement with the thumb-nut (Z 1, which bears againsta washer. A coiled spiral spring is interposed between the washer and the thumb-nut (Z 19. By loosening the thumb-nut (Z 1 the pointer @Z9 may be adjusted longitudinally and the springdisk may be turned to adjust the pointer, and the whole may be secured in the adjusted position by tightening the thumb-nut.
When it is desired to find the center of a round article, the center-gage E is secured to the blade B, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9. The center-gage has the slotted base e with the transverse tubular boss e', in which the bolt e2 may move with a close sliding t. The end e3 of the boltis screw-threaded and is in screwthread engagement with the nut e4, which is cushioned by a spiral spring interposed between the nut and the end oi the tubular boss.
An extension of the bolt e2 is provided with the raised bead e5, which engages with the groove on the blade B. From the base e extend the oblique arms e and e7, preferably placed at an angle of ninety degrees to each other and at forty-iive degrees to the edges of the blade B. The center-gage E when connected with the blade B is held in frictional contact with the same by the coiled spring acting on the nut ei and may be firmly secured by tightening the nut.
rlhe combination-tool materially facilitates the taking of measurements and the work oi machinists attending planing', grinding, and other machines requiring frequent and accurate measurements.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In atool of the nature described, the combination with the slotted head of the trysquare, means for securing the try-square to the grooved blade, the enlarged base, means for securing the head to the enlarged base ci" the try-square, and the longitudin all y-grooved blade, of the slotted arm (Z, the bead (Z2 in the slot, the post (Z5, the rotatably-supporteddisk (Z7, the pointer (Z9, and means for securing the pointer, as described.
2. 1n atool of the nature described, the combination with a grooved blade B, oi the trysquare A having the'faces (r and ((f, means for securing the try-square to the grooved blade B, the removable base C, and means for securing the baseto the face (t of the trysquare consisting of the clamp plate and thumb-screw, as described.
3. Inatool of the nature described, the combination with the grooved blade B, the trysquare A, means for securing the try-square to the blade, consisting of the screw a." having the bead (Z7 and the clamp-nut the removable base C, means for securing the base C to the try-square, consisting of the clampplate c' and the thumb-screw c", oi the arm means for securing the arm in the adjusted position to the grooved blade B, consisting of the thumb-screw (Z4, the post (Z'r, the base-disk (ZG, the spring-disk (Z7 carrying` the pointer ((l", the milled disk d", and the thumb-nut 0"" in screw-thread connection with the post, whereby the pointer is clamped and held in the adjusted position, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two Isubscribing witnesses.
