SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,159, dated September 6, 1904.

a rotatable head or turret is provided with a series of work-holders and a reciprocating carriage is provided with a corresponding series of tool-holders, whereby a plurality of blank rods may be simultaneously acted upon by the different tools carried in the tool-holders and the set of blank rods may beinter mittently rotated, so as to subject each of them in succession for a given period to the action of all of the tools.
In the drawings formingpart of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of the well-known Acme'screw making machine, substantially as set forth in said patent and having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken at about the line :2; w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa diagrammatic plan view of a novel tool-carrier and its connections, the parts being shown in active position. Fig. 4: is aview similar to Fig. 3, but showing the parts in inactive position; and Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged sectional and side views of one end of a lever which operates my novel tool-holder and a parts.
As fully set forth in said patent, the blank rods 1, which are preferably four in number,
are inserted in hollowspindles 2, which are mounted in a head or turret 3, revolubly mounted in a bearing 4, fixed upon the framework of the machine. Said spindles are provided with suitable clutches 5 and pinions 6, the latter being in mesh with a central mas- Serial No. 140,4:85- (No model.)
ter-pinion 7 fixed upon a main driving-shaft 8. Intermittent partial revolutions of said revoluble head are effected by means of a gear 9 fixed thereon, which is in mesh with a segmental gear'lO, the latter being given a uniform revolution, by means described in said patent, through the revolution of a shaft 11, which is actuated through a Worm-wheel l2 and a worm 13, connected bybevel-pinions 14: and 1,5and gears 16 and 17 to said shaft 8,-
so that the latter while revolving rapidly, so as to turn all of the work-carrying spindles with speed, is enabled to effect a slow revolution of the sector-gear 10, and thereby effect at suitable predetermined intervals partial rotations of the work-carrying head 3, the successive cutting operations being performed upon the work during the intervals when said head is stationary.
The multiple tool-carriage is designated as 18 and slides upon Ways 19 upon the framing in a direction longitudinal of the work, the tool-holders thereon (shown diagrammatically at 20, Fig. 2) being caused to advance to the work and then to retract. This movement of the slide is effected through a pendent stud or arm 21, fixed .upon the under side of the carriage and carrying "in its lower end a roller 22,
which engages with cams 23 and 24:, secured upon a barrel 25, fixed upon the shaft 11, illustrated in the present instance substantially gear'9 upon the work-carrying head, and there after retreat.
\ In carrying out my present lmprovernents Isecure upon the side bar 26 of the framing,
by means of bolts 27 a bracket consisting of legs 28 and 29, supporting at their upperends a bed 30, preferably oblique to said framing. Upon this bed is mounted a slide 31, which is suitablygibbed at 32 to a guide 33, formed or fixed upon the bed 30, Wherebysaid slide may be moved along said guide in a direction parallel to the movement of the multiple toolcarriage 18that is, parallel to the work 1- and fixed in diiferent positions upon said guide by means of the gib-screws 34 or otherwise. Upon this slide I mount a holder 35, carrying any suitable tool-such, for instance, as 36- said tool-holder being provided on its under side with a guide 37 to engage a groove 38 in the slide 31., said groove being preferably undercut and the guide 37 being formed to match and also having a gib 39 and suitable gib-screws 40, whereby said tool-holder is enabled to slide transversely of the direction of movement of the multiple tool-carriage 18-that is, transversely of the work 1or of the direction in which the slide 31 is adjustable. For moving said tool-holder 35 toward and away from the work I provide a lever 41 of the first order, which is fulcrumed, by means of a screw or pivot 42, upon the bed 30, at one end thereof, and has a pin-and-slot connection 43 with the sliding tool-holder 35, said lever preferably extendinglongitudinally of the work or transversely to the direction in which the toolholder 35 moves. For reciprocating said lever and tool-holder I fix upon the multiple tool-carriage 18, by means of screws 44, a bracket or arm 45, having a base portion 46, which may be concaved to fit the periphery of the circular tool-carriage 18. Said carriage, together with the arm 45, reeiprocates longitudinally of the lever 41, and in order to enable such longitudinal movements to vibrate the lever I provide upon opposite sides of the latter wedge- like cams 47 and 48, which are engaged by rolls 49 and 50, carried by the bracket 45. The rolls 49 and 50 each in the present instance is in the form of a hollow cylinder or sleeve upon a shaft 60, which shafts are received in slots 61 in the bracket 45 and are each provided on one end witha nut and washer 62 63 and at the other end with a head and washer 64 65. Suitable set-screws 66 are provided for engaging each end of such shafts to move them in the slots to give adjustment to the rolls either for the purpose of compensating for wear or to give adjustment to the tool other than that given by the adjustment of the cams 47 and The nuts 62 are to secure the rolls in their adjusted positions, the axis of said rolls being parallel with the axis of the lever-pivot 42 and the action of the rolls upon the cams during the traverse of the multiple tool-head 18 giving the lever slight vibratory movements, and hence imparting to the tool-holder 35 the required transverse movements to enable the tool36 to engage the work 1. Preferably the bracket 45 has a slot 51, which incloses both the lever 41 and the opposing cams 47 and 48 thereon, as seen clearly at Figs. 5 and 6, and preferably said cams are provided with straight dead portions 52 and 53, parallel with the lever-arm 41, and are also matchjointed to the edges of the lever at 54, the grooves in the lever, into which project tongues 56 upon the cams, having sufiicient extent to permit the adjustment of the cams along the lever and screws 57 being provided for securing the cams where adjusted. By this means, as will be observed, while the bracket 45 has a fixed throw, still the cams may be adjusted either to give a maximum throw or a minimum throw of the lever or any intermediate throw thereof, or, if desired, the cams may be adjusted so far along the lever that the latter remains always stationary or inoperative. Thus the independent tool 36 and holder 35 are enabled to perform a variety of operations upon different kinds of work or may be thrown out of use when desired.
It will be understood that the multiple toolcarriage 18 and the independent tool-holder 35 move toward the work simultaneously and retract simultaneously.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of my improvements.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- 1. In a screw-making machine, the combination with a carriage and means for advancing and retracting the same in the direction of the work, of a lever, a cam secured to and adjustable along said lever, a roller upon said carriage engaging said cam, and a tool-holder movable transversely to the movement of said carriage and mounted upon a slide which is adjustable longitudinally of the work.
2. In a screw-making machine, the combination with a slidable tool-carriage, a toolholder mounted upon the framework for movement transversely thereto, and means for enabling said carriage to advance and retract the last-mentioned tool-holder; said means including a lever and a portion adjustable thereon for varying the throw of the last-mentioned tool-holder.
3. In a screw-making machine, the combination with a slidable carriage, a lover, a pair of opposing longitudinal wedge-shaped cams match-jointed to opposite edges of said lever, means for securing said cams at different points along said lever,a bracketupon the carriage having means for engaging said cams, a tool-holder having a pin-and-slot connection with said lever, and movable thereby transversely into and out of engagement with the work, and aslide whereon the last-mentioned tool-holder is mounted; said slide being movable parallel with the work.
4. In a screw-making machine, the combination with a tool-carriage and means to slide the same; a lever fulcrumed to a fixed part of the machine; a pair of opposing cams upon said lever, means to adjust the cams longitudinally of said lever, means upon the carriage to engage said cams and rock the lever; a tool-holder connected with said lever, and movable thereby transversely into and out of engagement with the work; and a slide whereon the last-mentioned tool-holder is mounted,
said slide being adjustable parallel with the work.
5. In a machine-tool, the combinationwith' a slidable tool-carriage; .a tool-holder slidable transversely thereto; a lever fulcrumed'to afixed part of the machine and connected to the second tool-holder to slide the same; a camad j ustably carried by each side of said lever; a bracket on said carriage; and adjustable rolls carried by said bracket to engage the cams.
6. In a machine-tool, the combination with a slidable tool-carriage; a tool-holder'slidable transversely thereto; a lever fulcrumed to a fixed part of the machine and connected to the second tool-holder to slide the same; independently-adjustable cams carried by the sides of said lever; a bracket on said car' riage; and independently-adjustable rolls carried by said bracket to engage the cams.
7 In a machine-tool, the combination with a shiftable tool-carriage; a tool-holder shiftable transversely thereto; a lever fulcrumed' to, a fixed part of the machine and connected to said second tool-holder to shift the same; members each' having a face parallel to the line .of direction of movement of the carriage; and a face at an angle thereto located upon each side of said lever; rolls onthe carriage to act upon said latter faces; and means to independently adjust said members to control the timing of the throw of said lever'in each direction. 1
8. In a machine-tool, the combination with a tool-carriage, and means for advancing and retracting the same in the direction of the work; of a tool-holder mounted on a slide shiftable transversely of the work; a' lever pivoted to afixed part of the machine; an independently-adjustable cam on each side of one end of said lever; and a pair .of independently-adjustable rolls carried by the carriage and organized to run on-said cams.
9. Thecombin ation with a tool-carriage and meansfor reciprocating the same withrelation to its work, of a lever pivoted'to a'fixed part; independently-adjustable cams on said lever; means to engage'saidcams to throw the lever; means to adjust said cam-engaging means in the direction of the line of movement of the lever; a tool-holder mounted for move ment transversely to the movement of said carriage, and controlled by said lever; and means to adjust said the work.
10. In a machine-tool, the combination with a tool-carriage and means to reciprocate the same with relation to its work, of a lever pivoted to a fixed point, a cam on each side of said lever, means controlled by the carriage to engage said cams to throw the lever, independent means to adjust said cams to shift the point of engagement toward and from the median line of said lever, independent means to adjust said cam-engagingmeans also toward and from said median line, atool-holder adapted for move ment transversely to themovement of said carriage and controlled by said lever, and means to adjust said tool-holder longitudinally of the work. a
