To all whom, t may conccvt' Bc it known that I, Louis KYPKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterloo, in the county of Jelerson and Stateof VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to Lwhich it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to fence construction, and more particularly to a fence-post designed, primarily, for a wire fence, though useful for a fence of other form of construction; and my.

invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, as will' be hereinafter clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claims.'

The prime object of my invention, among others, is to able and durable character which when once anchored in its position in thel ground will prove to be a permanent form of improvement, lasting vindefinitely and enabling the wires to be readily secured or removed there? In order to enable the member 4, which is 4preferably formed of wood, though suitable staple or nail receiving substances may be adopted, to be removably retained within the recess 3, provided in the face of the post, I locate in the body ,of the post a transversely- 'disposed wire or rod 7, so located as to reach across the inner part of the recess 3, there being preferably two of said rods or sections of wire of suitable size', one' at the bottom and one at the top of the recess 3, and designed to cooperate with, the rod-sections 7 are recesses 8, formed in a contiguouspart of the inner edge ofthe member 4,`said recesses bement with the rod-sections I provide the locking device9, having an angular extension 10 upon its inner end and .a handle-like eX- tension 1l upon its outer end, the bodyportion 9 being designed to lie within the recess 12, formed in the edge of thel member 4, and itisy therefore obvious 4that by turning the extension 9 upward, so as to occupy a substantially horizontal position within the recess 13, the member 4 may be pushed inl place In order.

within the longitudinal recess 3 until the anchoring-rod 7 occupies the recess 8, when by turning the branch or extension 10 downward the member 4 will be held against outward movement, it being understood that the handle-section 11 may be secured, as by a wiresecuring staple 6. If preferred, the member 4 may be otherwise secured within the longitudinal recess 3, as by driving a nail or nails into the edge thereof at the time the post is being molded, in which case the member 4 is thus molded directly into the edge of the fence-post, and when the post is taken out of the mold it is completeready for use upon the line of fence. It is thought, however, that in order to enable the member 4 to be easily replaced if it should become destroyed by decay or other causes said member should be made removable, Vwhereby it may be quickly renewed, if desired.

In some instances, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 6, the transverse member or rod-section 7 may be formed with an integral vextension 14, adapted to extend through a hole provided in the member 4, the outer end of the extension 14 being threaded to receive the locking-nut 15, and when it is desired to remove the wooden section 4 this may easily be accomplished by removing the lockingnuts 15, as will be obvious.

In Fig. 7 it will be observed that the lower end of the recess 3 is provided with an outwardly and downwardly inclined terminal or end section, as indicated by the numeral 16,- said inclined terminal being for the purpose of insuring perfect drainage of any water that may get into the recess 3 around the sides of the member 4, thereby insuring greater protection against decay of the member 4.

To provide proper reinforcement for my improved post, I also provide one or more longitudinally-disposed rods 17 of proper length, preferably provided upon each end with the angular extensions 18. These rods are to be embedded within the body of the post upon each side of the recess, and additional rods, if desired, may be located in the rear side of the post inasmuch as the number of reinforcingrods employed may be left to the judgment of the manufacturer of the post. Obviously the said rods 17 are to prevent the post from being completely severed, thus making it possible to still use the post to good advantage, even though the hardened body portion should become cracked. rIhe said rods 17 may be left entirely straight or corrugated, if preferred, andthe angular extensions 19 may be of any desired length,and,as above stated,any preferred number of the rods deemed necessary lo attain a thorough reinforcement ol the post may be employed.

For ordinary purposes it is thought that a simple securing device, as a common nail or nails driven into the side of the member 4, will be all that is necessary to retain said member in its position within the recess 2%, and l therefore reserve the right to use any ol the forms of securing devices which l have hereinbefore described.

Believing that the advantages and manner of using my improved fence-posts have thus been made clearly apparent, further description is deemed unnecessary, and while l have described the preferred combination and construction of parts deemed necessary in materializing my invention, l wish to comprehend in this application all substantial equivalents and substitutes that may be considered as falling fairly within the scope and purview of my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is--- 1. In a fence-post the combination with the post lhaving a longitudinal recess on one side thereof and anchoring-rods intersectingl said recess, of a member 4 adapted to lit said recess, said member 4 having` recesses S therein to receive said anchoring-rods, a locking device carried by said member, having an angular extension on one end and a handle extension upon the other end, adapted to lock said member 4 within said longitudinal recess and means to secure said device in its locked position, substantially as set forth.

2. The herein-described post construction comprising a post formed of cement and having longitudinally-disposed rein'lorcing-rods 17, and a longitudinal recess upon one side thereof, anchoring-rods intersecting said longitudinal recess, a member 4 adapted 1o lit said recess, the lower end of said member 4 being inclined to lit the inclined end of said recess, and means co 'perating with said anchoring-rods to removably secu re said member 4 within said recess, all con'ibined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
